I’d say the main reason to stay here is location. It’s pretty dated and depressing, and the layout is tricky. They have 34 separate units, with kind of a cheap motel vibe. Parking is $18 a night as an additional sting to the overpriced rooms. I stay in around 90 Marriotts a year, and I’d say this one is pretty bad in comparison to the norm. 3 stars for the nice staff and housekeeping.
Very nice rooms with decent amenities and close to downtown, UCSD, and other locations. Really good free breakfast that is clean, well stocked and we'll maintained. Will definitely stay there again.
When booking our room online though Marriott, under the special request section, we requested to be on the second floor and extra towels. When we arrived at check in, the man processing our stay asked if the second floor was alright. He placed us in room 123, which has to be the worst room onsite. It’s next to the main road. Our bed shook every time large vehicles passed by. We did not have any extra towels as requested. The screen door to balcony was off the tracks. The television wasn’t plugged in correctly and the floor lamp had a light out. In addition, there was bagged trash outside of our door for part of the day. This is not the kind of treatment that we expected as a Marriott rewards member. We wouldn’t expect this kind treatment even if we weren’t a rewards member.
Nice place and clean studio apartments. Breakfast is good. The veggie crumble is only available alternate days, the vegan option should be there every day and it would be best if they either use halal/kosher meat or seafood.
Perfect hotel in La Jolla! The rooms are very clean, the beds are comfy, it's quiet, the breakfast is big, and the room service menu is huge. Plus there is a great outdoor area with a fire pit, a pool, and volleyball net.
Cozy and comfortable stay. Friendly and helpful staff. We'll located with ample paid parking and dining options. Well furnished kitchen. Complimentary breakfast is served hot and fresh. Highly recommend for extended stay.
2 level units complete with kitchen. The "family" size rooms have 2 bathrooms, 3 beds and a fireplace. Perfect for large groups that want to stay together. A bit dated but clean and comfy.
I've visited this hotel regularly for the last 5 years. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The hotel is in walking distance to a shopping center with two supermarkets and a bunch of restaurants and close to I5. A great location.
I thought this was a great hotel. Yes, it's an old apartment building but it is well maintained, clean and comfortable. Service was excellent and everyone was friendly. I made several calls for service and they were all answered within 5 minutes. They had some beach toys they let us borrow. Breakfast was your typical Residence Inn's. Everyone was kind and accommodating. It's a few minutes from the beach and Aquarium. Can't wait to go back. Wish they would move the wheelchair entry unit from the side of the pool to allow for better visibility of the kids on the steps but whatever, this was exactly what we needed for our family of 7.
Rooms were clean and spacious. Staff was nice and everything went smoothly. The only things keeping this from a five star are that the parking costs extra and I found the breakfast to run out quickly.
I've been a member of Marriott since 2004, and we've stayed at many Residence Inns over the years. We planned to stay here for 6 days for family vacation. It started off badly because we were met at front desk with some very unprofessional attitude, from an individual who wasn't very helpful with dealing with an issue, that was because of their system, but I had to call Marriott rewards support to address the problem for them. Not what you'd expect from a Marriott employee. This is a very old facility, so the smell of smoke was clearly there in our room, as well as gnats flying around. It was just bad. We had very loud neighbors and what sounded like drunk guests in the parking lot fighting our first night. Loud cussing that woke us and the kids up. As a result, we decided to leave the hotel and find another Residence Inn locally because of the gross smell, gnats and noise. One other hospitality issue I had we have a dog and I know we are responsible for the one time non-refundable pet cleaning fee, and as we left, because of hotel's issue, we had to pay it. What stinks is because we had to move hotels, because of the low quality of our stay, we essentially had to pay a one time pet fee twice for our vacation because of having to find a second hotel. I don't think that was right. Combine that with a lost day of vacation due to no sleep and having to find new hotel, re-pack and move to new hotel, it just was a really bad experience and I'd suggest you stay away unless you're ok with an old hotel combined with some potential front desk bad attitude, noise, bugs and bad smells. Cherry on top of all of this, as I checked out, one front desk lady was very nice, but the other front desk guy (who was friendly) suggested I not take a lower room to avoid noise I don't think it was his intention, but a solution to the problems at a hotel doesn't lie on guest to know better how to book a better room.
The pool is fantastic, though a little on the cold side for swimming after dark. The breakfast options are amazingly varied. Some rooms are very spacious and open, while others feel much more tight and enclosed. The rooms are organized in small houses. Decor is lovely, and fairly simple. Good place to stay.
I have stayed here once or twice a year for the last ten years. On the positive side, the rooms are spacious. The location is convenient to visiting the university and local high tech companies. On the negative side, it is hard to find a parking spot if you arrive after 8:00 pm. You may have to go to the overflow area. The desk won't warn you about this - you are on your own. Part of the drive through the complex is one way, which is very inconvenient when everything is parked up. The breakfast is free but it is very crowded. The coffee is poor, but this is typical of all Residence Inns.
Enjoying our stay so far. The hotel is in a great location. Our room is clean. The room layout isn't the best. It has two queen beds in one room and a loft with another queen bed. None of the bedrooms have doors. I wish there was a bit more privacy available. Other than that, the room is great.
