Have read some reviews about a smell in the Hotel, there is a smell in the valet parking area and the back door where you enter from the valet but it is not a terrible smell. I feel like it is actually the downtown area. The hotel itself is beautiful very elegant an historic the room we stayed in was nice but there were a few problems with the maintenance again nothing that cannot be overlooked, and it doesn't take away from the overall experience of the hotel. It is very convenient to the downtown Chattanooga area close to all the attractions close to several restaurants and within walking distance of a lot of the downtown area. I read reviews about the safety Factor in downtown Chattanooga but we walked a few times and had no problems even late at night. One plus is the Starbucks in the lobby area that is accessible from the outside too. Did not have a chance to try room service or the steakhouse downstairs but next time I'm in Chattanooga I will stay here again and hope to try those out.

    Very disappointed customer.
Don't stay here if you are planning on seeing the "historic" part of the hotel. We stayed here this past weekend. They are renovating and where they have you staying looks nothing like the pictures on the website. I was very disappointed and felt like the hotel should make customers aware when making a reservation of what is happening at the hotel.
The steakhouse is no longer open. Our view was of a wall. You open the curtains and all you see is a brick wall. I am not one to leave negative things about businesses, but I just feel like people who maybe contemplating on staying here knows exactly what to expect - as I had no clue and was SOOO disappointed. The pluses were - the staff was nice and the bed was comfortable.
    *****UPDATE****** 12/05
The hotel manager was understanding to my disappoint and refunded my stay. I am glad that they are willing to try to make things right. Hope the hotel looks amazing once all of the renovations are complete.

Overall a decent experience. However it is due for a remodel and is about to close for said remodel. That being said the toilet leaked, the online booking did not provide an area for you to inform them that you have a pet and apparently gas with dogs are limited to the second and third floor so I was charged after the fact. The bed was extremely comfortable. But for your stay be prepared to pay $15 plus tip for valet.

This place could be such a nice hotel, the location is great and the lobby is beautiful. That’s about where the nice words end however. The rooms are way over due for a major overhaul. The room itself feels very dark, especially at night. The couch had rips in it and the bathroom was all kinds of dingy. The grout started out creme colored at the walls and by the middle of the floor it was black and nasty. The shower just felt dingy too with layer upon layer of caulking thrown on all the seams. To top it off mattress had a horrible divot in it and there was zero place to charge a phone within 6’ of the bed. I mean, come on, that’s the least they could do is give us a place to charge our phone.

We were there this weekend for my friend's birthday. I had heard many great things about this hotel and it has always been her favorite so I was looking forward to it. The lobby was nice. That is about the only good thing I can say. Our room was a nice size but it was a DUMP! She called to change rooms. She went to look at it and decided that ours was the lesser of two evils. The moldy, musty smell got me when I got off the elevator. The room had peeling wallpaper in the bathroom, water stains on the ceiling, stains on the curtains, stains on the chair, a very large red spot in the carpet and the linens on the bed did not match. Also, there was a very small dorm size refrigerator on the floor. This is not what I expect for a $300 per night hotel. The wall unit air conditioner was due for a cleaning for sure. I now have no voice and my allergies are crazy. I am sure it is due to the mold, must and mildew of this place. I don't think I have ever stayed at such a bad hotel. DO NOT STAY HERE!

Elegant lobby, very polite staff. Rooms are small, bathrooms smaller with no counter space. Add $15/day for parking. Restaurant is Porter's Steakhouse, nothing for my vegan spouse. Convenient to sights in Chtnga, walking distance and in the free shuttle line. Doubt we would stay there again.

My wife and I came to Chattanooga for the weekend. We stayed 2 nights in a Junior Suite at the Read House. The room was plenty spacious. The bathroom, though small, was clean and reasonably updated. Any complaints I have would mostly be directly related to the age of the hotel so they aren't really complaints at all since the charm would largely be lost without them. The hotel is in a perfect location as pretty much anything we had interest in doing was within easy walking distance. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who hasn't stayed before.

The entry is gorgeous and clearly cared for. This place has a lot of historic charm so we chose it. The thrill wore off instantly as we entered the room and the smell of perfume and mold/mildew overwhelmed. We asked for another room and they gladly took care of it. The second was a bit better but the stale smell was still in there too. After about an hour we decided to pull the curtains only to find no darkening panel and we were facing a parking garage that has lights on all night. They were out of curtains so we would have to move again. We opened the 3rd room door and again the moldy, musty, stale smell. We closed the door and asked to check out.

Now the staff were all friendly, courteous and inviting. They did all they could and they are a saving Grace in the Read House. It's clear that the updates scheduled next year are drastically needed. I am someone with health issues and after an hour in that second room my lungs felt heavy. Upon going outside they cleared up. I hope the owners will look into the mold smell and details that need to be corrected.

We hope to see improved reviews next year after renovations and can try our stay again.

A beautiful historic building. The staff are very kind and generous in their service. Their security keeps people from being rude late Into the Night and the rooms are comfortable and updated. Ballrooms are gorgeous and help make special events Feel more unique.

The ballroom we we're in was absolutely gorgeous. The mezzanine location kept the event mostly private and there were very conveniently located restrooms. All staff I interacted with were very kind and eager to help. I had a wonderful time.

The charm of this place is only offset by the sloppy workmanship of the recent remodel. We really enjoyed our stay. You really feel like you're coming to someplace magical when you get to the lobby. But then you get to the room and realize that the rooms are very old and that's okay because it's a Historic Hotel. However the most recent remodel was done very sloppily. for example there's texture on the frames around the mirrors in the bathroom. The texture is sprayed on to the wall in the ceiling in the room that we stayed. this place has a lot of potential that I had to take away one star because of this bad workmanship.

Interesting Inn, but will likely not be back. Great location. Having easy access to the free trolley was great! It really was a pretty looking place. The staff was helpful and Porterhouse restaurant was great too. Unfortunately for the price of the room we were hoping for a little more. Our tub would not drain while showering. The AC in the room struggled to keep the room cool and was rather noisy. The fitness area was woefully lacking. The doors slamming at night did not make for a restful night sleep. I'm not sure if it was the door that led to the stairwell that was right next to our room or maybe just the other guests on our hall. On the plus side despite being in a busy area we did not hear a lot of traffic noise. I believe they are getting ready to do renovations so hopefully some of the complaints we had during our stay will be tended too.

The location is great, Chattanooga is a very pedestrian friendly city and the free shuttle is right outside the hotel. Valet parking is also nice and there is a Starbucks and restaurant in the hotel. The restaurant was just OK; there is a classic 24h diner that is a better breakfast option. The rooms vary quite a bit in layout and size. Ours had a sitting area with couch and chairs. The air conditioning was cold but loud, and the carpet kind of had a perpetually damp feeling. The pillows were feather and comfortable, and the bed was good if a little soft. Room refrigerator s are available upon request, the staff is very accommodating, and the style of the hotel is totally classic. They are working on renovating the hotel in the next year, I hope they update without killing the charm. The pool is very shallow, about 3ft at max, and heavily chlorinated. Family loved it though. They don't have a gym, but had treadmill, elliptical and sitting stationary bike. All in all, I recommend the hotel.
