A lot of great information if your a read it all or just a walk by type of museum goer. Also good for kids and groups. Definitely worth a visit.

Good museum with a lot of information on Charleston. A lot of little bits of info on a broad array of topics. Also had a lot of items to look at

After thast there was a good display of geology, dinosaurs of the region, and local animal life. They also had things donated over the years such as Egyptian relics.

After that was a very good quilting exhibit. A silver smithing exhibit, a kids hall. A little for everyone.

The oldest and first city museum 1773 is one of the best you can visit, and I'm a museum fan. The newly reinterpreted Natural History Wing is fascinating. There's a new kiddie wing also!

The museum is well laid out, a great walk through South Carolina history. The new natural history section is really cool, it has interactive exhibits and life size fossil replicas that were fun for the kids. The Kidstory room has more interactive exhibits that my kids enjoyed playing with.

Really neat for the "oldest museum in America"! A variety of items well laid out with many items from the Revolutionary War and even more items from the Civil War that make it worth a visit.

Absolutely worth your time. You can run through it in 2 hrs. You need at least 3 to really experience it at its best.

I was so excited to see the dinosaur bones but unfortunately they were renovating and all fossils were closed off. Was really bummed out but we decided to try the Charleston Aquarium instead. Glad we did.

All private owned.NOT HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF GOVERNMENT BODY. This collection represents poor, few and sparse primary sources (all reprinted/recreated stories) of how the private collectors "think" history happened. NOT BASED ON 100% FACTUAL EVIDENCE. Completely perturbed by my experience at this "American museum" that was anything but. I've been to dozens of American museums, this however is a disgrace- more than a self engrandized, spoiled collection, some "evidence" points to white supremacy (not obvious to most).
The Charleston Museum could have used rich texts in original documents AND omniscient viewpoints- instead chose to foster opinion based view points. This is not a place to learn. Don't waste your $$$$$ on an overpriced (highly questionable sourced) museum.

A must see for Charleston history buffs! There were two exhibits closed when we went and the open exhibits were otherwise not super exciting. There is a kid's play area which is really great. I'll go back and reassess when those other exhibits open. There is a lot of really great history here though.

First of all, it's not a bad little museum. Neat things inside. But, I think they'd be better if they focused on the history of Charleston and surrounding areas from pre-colonial, colonial (pirate Blackbeard actually did raiding here but never mentioned), post-revolution, civil war, WW1, 2 talk about the Navy yard, civil rights era and then to today. They kind of do this, but then you walk around a corner after getting done with the civil war and there's a freakin polar bear missing a toe. UhOK?? And then there's a dinosaur beside him. And some stuffed birds and then some Egyptian mummies. It's like a "show and tell" day at school, if your classmates had polar bears and mummies and dinosaurs. Just didn't make much sense and seems a wasted opportunity to preserve and teach about the low country.

Might be one of the smallest museums that I have ever been but it was still a beauty. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Avail of their great deal - one ticket for the museum, Joseph Manigault House and Heyward Washington House.

It's a museum about Charleston, that was the only museum in Charleston, so the museum itself has its own unique history. I brought my kids here (ranging 7 to 13) and we found enough to keep out eyes busy for a few hours. There are a few interactive things to do. It was fun, but on the expensive side. Not a requirement for visiting Charleston, but it's somewhere good to learn the history of the area and get a feel for South Carolinian quirkiness.
