Very interesting and educational while studying the war of northern aggression. Really needed at least another hour to go through everything in the museum. We only had enough time to walk and read about everything around the Ft. Tour guides are amazing and helpful. Did not even step foot in the gift shop.

I dearly loved this tour. From the boat ride out there and back to the tome spent in the fort itself. Was in awe at the amount of history here. This is where the 'shot heard around the world' was from. The guides were very informative and there is just endless photo-ops. Well worth the money and time.

You go here for one reason and that is to be awed at the people who were willing to die for what they believe. I can’t describe the feeling I get in these historic places but can only say that I never expect anything more than the knowledge I can gain by standing where braver men than me have stood.

Take the earliest tour and you can participate in the raising of the flag. My son got to help as did several other guests. They have a few facilities on the island but they make it very clear what the tour offers in the way of conveniences.

This is definitely one of the best tours in Charleston. Very interesting and informative, and it is a lovely, relaxing ferry ride out to the fort. We had dolphins swimming around the ferry for most of our trip out, and the views from the fort are beautiful. They could use a little more seating for people waiting for their tour, but the visitor center is interesting and has a cute little gift shop. There is also a museum and a gift shop at the fort. A snack bar at the fort would be a fantastic addition, and it would be great if they accepted credit/debit cards, in addition to cash, for snacks and drinks on the ferry. This place is a must see if you are visiting Charleston, and they offer military discounts, as well as senior and student discounts.

So disclaimer, I'm a national parks buff and I love visiting sites and I've been to plenty of forts. That being said, this is definitely my favorite one. You get to take a fun ferry ride across the harbor to this island that's steeped in military and national history. You'll have about an hour to roam around, which may or may not be enough time. Depends on how thoroughly you read all the signs. I'm going to appeal to your patriotism when I say that if you're in Charleston you need to visit Fort Sumter to understand more about who we are as a people and as a nation. This is not an experience you'll soon forget.

Great historic site. Part of the national Park service. You can only get there by taking a boat tour from 2 location. Charleston and Patriots point. Worth the trip and the fees.

Made it for the last trip of the day, wish we had made earlier. Walked the grounds, didn't have time for the museum or shop. Definitely want to come back and will some day soon.

Loved the entire experience. Being from the middle of the county, boat rides are rare. Hearing history on the ride made it so much more interesting. Would have loved to see it in her prime. Hard to imagine 50 foot walls. I would have stayed there another hour if I could. But that is just me. The ground of school aged children were ready to leave after 15 minutes. I was lucky to get on the first trip when they had a flag raising ceremony.

You take a 30 minute informative ferry that has refreshments and toilets on board, then get to Fort Sumter where if you take 1st ferry at 930am you can participate in raising the flag this was my husband's favorite part of our trip. Plenty of history 1 hour on island goes quickly. Small museum and even smaller gift shop but very cool place.

They've done a great job keeping this historic area maintained and have provided a lot of great markers and information. Pretty cool to see the bunkers and cannons and gives a good picture of what it was like during the war. There's even a nice indoor museum and gift shop. Our whole family really enjoyed the visit.

Really excellent tour including a beautiful ferry ride around the bay with excellent and well thought out narration. Very interesting and scenic fort. National park staff and volunteers go above and beyond to answer guests questions and explain sights and history without even asking.

Terrific dolcent giving 15 minutes of history at beginning of tour when we first landed on island. She's from Springfield, Illinois I am sorry I don't remember her name.
Reading the placards was very interesting and seeing how far away the army was that was bombarding the fort with mortars and cannonballs was remarkable since the island and fort are much smaller than I envisioned.

I took the last ferry/tour of the day and got to help lower the American flag over the fort! What a awesome experience! Just stand up top and take it all in. The views alone are worth it, but the historical importance means so much more. The fort is an incredible piece of American history that shouldn't be missed. All sorts of history for everyone, no matter how much you already know, to learn about. The NPS was very helpful too!

I never realized what an important role S.C. and Charleston specifically had in our nation's history. Maybe it's from the dumbed down version of history that they teach in public schools.

The ride back and forth is nicely narrated. Actually traveling through the harbor made the geography of it all make more sense.

The National Parks Service is undertaking a great task in restoring, preserving, and teaching about this important piece of land in the harbor.

One of those places you must visit if you are only around the Charleston area for a few days (and also an excellent place to take the family). Note that though it is not filled with as many Civil War era relics as one would expect, the relevance of the fort up through the World Wars and the remaining structures from that period are still an interesting sight. Worth seeing and learning about.
