Historic, visually appealing, and friendly staff, but otherwise pretty bad experience. The walls are paper thin and there isn't a ceiling Our "cabin" was across from the men's bathroom, which was easily the worst room in the hostel. We didn't sleep at all. If you are looking for a place to crash after the club and you don't care much about sleeping then this is the place for you. Bathrooms were clean and the bed was comfortable but the place was dark. Not the best experience, and probably not worth the price of the room.

This is a very up market hostel. Lovely looking building. Very small bed cabins. You can hear people in the other rooms snoozing. However. The staff are great characters, extremely helpful. Big social areas to mingle with fellow adventurers. Roof top seats. Great little gem. Quite affordable. If your in the area and need somewhere to stay I would definitely recommend. Clean. Tidy. Good people affordable.

This is a great little place! I was so happy to find they had a window with a cabin super last-minute. The space is nice and clean, the rooftop is incredible, and the other guests are quiet and respectful. And if you’re noise sensitive, they even give you earplugs. The staff have all been lovely, and it’s in an incredible part of town. Next time I can’t crash on a friend’s floor I’ll be back for sure.

The place is very small but cozy. Unlike other reviews, I liked the staff very much, they are all so helpful. The room and the beds are small, but is a great cost benefit staying. Near the subway station, it is well located and you can get whatever you want in Manhattan very fast. Shared baths are always clean, and it has a great rooftop.

DUMP! I'd give this a negative 10 if I could. WORST place to stay EVER. For a start, when I book a "cabin", I expect it to have a ceiling. That's right - NO CEILING on the cabin, just lattice. So it's basically a big open dorm with some rubbish walls. Rooms were disgusting, small, out-dated and SO LOUD - don't expect to sleep. I had to pay to stay elsewhere because I couldn't sleep. Rude staff. They even decided to throw a party on the rooftop without telling anyone, so we had random strangers using the shared bathroom and vomiting till 3am. Nothing good to say.

This place is good of people who only want a place to stay for a night and sleep.
First, they don't have an elevator, so if you will carry your large luggage with you, it will be inconvenient.
Second, the room for one person is extremely small. There's one twin size bed and one small cabin, you'll get a small space for turn and that's all.
Third, you need to share bathroom with others who live in the same floor. They only has 3 shower rooms for women's floor but usually it won't be crowded.
Fourth, the floor of each room is not fully covered. It was covered by hollow boards so it is not soundproof. If your neighbor is snoring, making any noises or talking, you can hear everything. (But The Bowery House gives you free earplugs in your room, I guess they know that and try to make their customers feel better)
Fifth, the staff here are very polite, they will give you advises and helps. Also, this location is really good. It takes you only 5-10 mins walk to the nearest subway station and there're many restaurants nearby.
These are the facts that I have experienced in the Bowery House. If you're sensitive about noises or private spaces, you won't like this place. But if you are only coming back the hostel to sleep and don't mind about personal spaces, this is the right place for you/

The customer service over the phone is ok, could be better. When I got there the doorman was very nice. Then inside everything is extremely dark no natural light from the walls to the ceiling, floor, and furniture all black and dark which is overwhelming. I wanted to leave immediately but they have the "pay or lose it all policy".
When I got to the "room" I literally couldn't stretch my arms completely from one wall to the other. So, it's a kids shoe box the toilets and showers are shared with 50+ people and right now I can hear the person next to me snoring like a train. And all this for over a hundred and twenty dollars per night when it's not even worth $25. 😡👎🏼👎🏼
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. Airbnb better.

A nice place for folks seeking their own small space. While I was there I had a cabin room. It was just big enough for a single bed, a small table, and a little bit of floor space. Fine if you don't have a lot of luggage. A large hiking pack would have taken up a lot of room. Not a good place to sleep if you are taller than 5'10". Literally, the wall starts at the end of the bed. I was there on a Tuesday, and it was very quiet. Air conditioner was in order and served well. Very friendly staff. All-in-all a nice place to catch up on sleep, if you plan on hitting the town, and not spending a lot of time in the hotel room.

Not bad for the price you're paying. The cabins are small and sound travels through the lattice ceilings. The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed using the lounge and the rooftop garden. Thought I wasn't keen on using the shared bathrooms, they were very nice and kept clean.

Cool place. Very cool. But a warning! If you are over 5'10 you may not be comfortable. My feet were hanging off the mattress and touching the wall at 5'8. The rooms are teeny, but adorable. The bathrooms are clean and nice. The night I spent however, the heat was cranking, I was boiling. The windows on the floor were open to all the street noise, and it was still very hot. Also, the stairwell is dimly lit, be careful.
Neat neighborhood, cool common living area, and the garden is nice too.

Stayed at this Horror Hotel in 2007 and it was a nightmare we will never forget. We paid $80 a night.
We traveled all over the world and stayed at some dodgy places but this one topped it all.
This "hotel" consists of floors stuffed with wooden sheds with ceilings that are covered with chicken fences. It looked like a set for a horror movie. When your neighbor switches on the light your shed is lid as well and noise travels all over this dirty place without ceilings.

The real HORROR were the bed bugs. I woke up in the middle of the night itching all over my body to discover my shirt was covered in small blood stains. My wife cried for days because the rash and itching was beyond anything she experienced so far.
When we complained with the staff the guy actually accused us of bringing in the bedbugs! I contacted a laywer right away but during the phone call another employee stepped in, handed a tube with lotion against the itching and gave us our money back.

Absolutely great place for single travellers, groups or adventurous couples. The staff are friendly, rooms (cabins) are a sight to behold, and everything works out well as a place to stay in NYC. You shouldn't be spending your time in your room when your in NYC anyway, but it is a great place to sleep. We slept in a double cabin with a window which was sweet, great views. Also very noisy but the provided ear plugs take care of that. Beautifully decorated throughout the building. Rooftop terrace is a nice addition. Well situated in the city and reasonably for what you get and the fact that it's in Manhattan.

Thought we were getting a more private space. The room was barely private with a fenced ceiling. Woke up multiple times throughout the night due to loud neighbors. The bed sheets were also a little dirty on the underside. My boyfriend and I did not even feel comfortable sleeping on the bed. Despite the poor experience, the front desk attendants were very nice. Would not return or recommend to anyone.
