Well preserved, and friendly staff. Guides are useful, but not critical. Actors for reenactments are great story tellers. Crowded. My children loved it. Don't miss the other missions too. They're close by and tours are free. You can park at other missions and bicycle between them on a rental bicycle for cheap. Otherwise, try parking outside the downtown area and rode the bus for cheap.

The Alamo is a truly historic place. The best part about our visit was discovering the care and reverence the Alamo is given. There are numerous displays showcasing the history and the people involved. There are many items on display, as well, from everyday items to weaponry like pistols, rifles, cannons, and more.
There are staff who are involved in Q & A's while in character, and they do a great job.
The area is clean, and there is plenty of room for people to discover more about this fascinating site.response / report this review -

We always find a way to make it to the Alamo when we are in San Antonio. The history, the people, the stories, the facility as a whole, it is all gorgeous. Lots of history, and lots of people that can tell you great little stories about things that happened on site that you won't find in history books. Take it to her, listen, learn, and feel American history. There's never a bad time to go. Even in the dead of winter, this is a great experience.

When you get here, you really do get a sense of what all the history is about. They did a really great job of turning this space and grounds into a living museum - one which really conveys the sense of gravitas, sacrifice, and chivalry that led to this site becoming one of the most famous of the state. The fact that it is now filled with beautiful trees and pathways to compliment the educational component and the striking ruins of the mission hall itself never hurts. Beyond just the name, please consider going. It was a spectacular experience!

We went to the Alamo on 11/19/17. Beautiful weather, mid-80s with a good wind to keep everyone cool. When you first approach the Alamo, you see it iconic beautiful shape and might be welcomed by one of the several information people. There looks to be 3 ways to experience the Alamo: guided tours, audio tour, and on your own. Our group opted doing none of the tours and did it on our own. I recommend going through the courtyard first and experiencing the other buildings first, but if the line is short to get inside of the church (the building you call the Alamo), then do that right a way. The line looks like it can get fairly long. In the courtyard, the first building on your left has a theater room, wait for the next showing of the video. It is 17 minutes but it is a very informative video done by the history channel and it is well put together. It looks like they show the same video in the back of the courtyard, so maybe experience that if the front theater has a line. The only problem I didn't like about the courtyard experience was how crowded buildings could get. It made seeing all of the interesting artifacts difficult. My wife and I plan on going back and experiencing the audio tour of the Alamo on a weekday, so we don't feel rushed due to the crowding of people. The Alamo is still free and I would recommend it for any person that loves to learn a little history.

Love the Alamo. Only had 30 minutes to explore before they closed. But coming back for a ghost tour at night there is always a sheriff guarding the area. He was honestly the best part of being there. Went up to him to ask some questions and he gave a 30 minute Q&A + History lesson on the Alamo and all the things that the city is doing to bring it back to its original state along with the streets and surrounding buildings.

Lots of renovation in progress on this historic monument, but it does not detract from how beautiful and revered this site is. The gardens and historical exhibits are easy to access and well maintained, the staff are very friendly and very knowledgeable, the film show is worth watching. We loved it. The surrounding area is alive with things to do and see. Plenty of places to eat and drink. San Antonio is a fantastic place.

History History History especially for Texans and military buffs. Amazing old Spanish mission now completed surrounded by and located in the heart of San Antonio. Hard to imagine ~200 'rag tag' soldiers/statesmen like James Bowie, William Travis and including the famed frontiersman Davy Crockett–held out courageously for 13 days before the thousands of regular Mexican soldiers over ran them. Also it is close to the beautiful and fascinating River Walk.

What! How could one even ascribe a rating to such a historical, monumental and reverent place. Texas wouldn't exist today without the men who sacrificed their lives here for independence. The Alamo is free, guided audio tour is extra. Donations accepted. Be respectful and reverent. Don't use your phone or bring pets or food.

What can I say.. I'm from Texas and was raised learning about Texas history. I love walking by and visiting the Alamo. It's a place of historical significance to both Texas and the United States. It was the first show of resiliency shown to protect the land that I love so much. People from across the country joined in to defend the Alamo and gave their lives for what they believed in. I love Texas, I love the land and the people of this great state. I will always honor this monument and those that helped make this state what it has become.

This place was AMAZING! Took my kids to talk about history and this place had recorded history remotes that talked about what happened! Once we were able to get into the court yard they had actors who talked about what it was like to live back then, the soldiers explained what the carried in their napsacks, other talked about guns and knives, the woman talked about their rolls and caregiver and nurses. It was such a beautiful place and the new James Bowie museum was very cool! The screens were interactive and the explanation and story telling was detailed and interesting. The grounds were clean and lines moved quickly. It is a must to visit!

It's really amazing to learn about such a interesting part of Texas history. Everything was so cool to look at. The Bowie exhibit had the most technologically advanced displays. The greenery was beautiful. No pictures inside the buildings but outside was nice. There's even an educational video from history channel to take you through the timeline. Must visit!

Great place to visit! Absolutely free. The audio tour is a plus but definitely not necessary as plenty of displays provide information around the grounds. Watch the movie! It's free and gives you a better idea of what happened here.

It's always nice to see a piece of history, and for free too. They have volunteers that demo and explain some of the history and they do offer audio tours (for $7.00) and guided tours (for a fee). too. Or you can just walk around and enjoy the display and experience a piece of history. Their gift shop was a bit of a miss. I was expecting more items related to the Alamo but it felt more like a thrift shop with fudge and candies.

I love visiting and learning about Texas History. A great place with a great staff. A good trip if you're not from around here, or even if you live in the city. I highly recommend the Alamo if you want to see the main sights of San Antonio. If you have the game, "Ingress," you can take advantage of the Alamo mission to find out a bit more history.
