My wife and I dined here on Sat 12/2. The food and service were exceptional as many of the other reviewers have stated.
However, I am incredibly disappointed with the lack of follow-up and respect the restaurant has showed. After about 2.5 hours of eating at the restaurant, my wife became incredibly ill. The symptoms were generally worse than a simple norovirus. I called the restaurant the next morning, and left a voicemail detailing when & what we ate at the restaurant and that my wife had gotten ill. Two days later, my wife visited her primary care doctor, and after several tests - my wife was diagnosed with Trichinosis - a roundworm based in tainted pork. My wife's dish was the Sunday Gravy, which contains pork and it was the only pork she ate that weekend.
I called the restaurant and asked to speak with a manager. The host was kind, and after a ~5 min wait, I was told the manager was in a meeting, could not speak & that they would call me back. I did not receive a call back. Two days later I again tried to reach a person of management, and was told again the manager could not be reached and that I would be called back. My wife, having used an online reservation service to make our original reservation, attempted to contact them through this reservation service as well on 12/13. Still no response.
Again, I will reiterate that the food and staff were wonderful - up until the food poisoning. I am incredibly disappointed by the seeming lack of respect that this staff has exhibited by refusing to acknowledge or follow-up.response / report this review -

Had the Wellington. It was great, meat was cooked just right, pastry was crunchy. The place was also quiet so you could actually hear each other in a conversation. Service was great, food was presented with plate covers. Great drink selection. Great place.

Simply the best in ambiance, food, drink and service. Catch their oyster happy hour early, 4pm - 6pm or late, 9pm - 10pm. A wonderful slice of Boston history.

My adult son Brian and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch, fish & chips, the service and window view were great! Than you! He has since passed on but everytime I go by the restaurant I think of the happy memory! :)

Thought to be French, turned out to be American Italian. Food not bad. The olive oil for bread is good, but balsamic vinegar is not provided. Recommend Henry's soup and Wellington steak. Upper floor is good for dining, lower floor is more like a pub. Can reach the entrance from either side of the small lane.

I have been a patron at the Marliave for 10 years now. I had decided to take my fiancé for her birthday as she had never been. The main dining hall was and always has been a beautiful place to dine. The ambiance and the food were both amazing per usual. However the service was beyond atrocious. Our waiter (Kyle) was inattentive, forgot to bring us things that we ordered or asked for as acompaniments for our meal. We had made an open table reservation (under Dean M) and put in our reservation that we were celebrating her birthday and upon arrival again asked if we could have something brought out with a candle, which was never brought out. Also when asked for our food to be to go, it was never brought out to us. Please make it a point to train the staff in proper etiquette when before we were done ordering our waiter brought us our bill. Upon speaking to the manager (her name begins with an M and escapes me at the moment) she was equally as dismissive as our waiter was the entire. What should have been a celebration of great company, amazing food, and wonderful ambiance was ruined by extremely poor service and dismissive management. Very sad to have to leave this review.

The fish and chips as well as the Scampi are delicious. We also sat on the second floor which had a great dining atmosphere and there's outside seating as well.

Get the pressed chicken. Crispy skin and well brined meat. The mussels are excellent. The bread was sub-par, but I'm still giving five stars for great service, good atmosphere, and truffle fries.

Great little French bistro, hidden gem in downtown. Great cocktails, especially the tres curieux! Loved the food, the truffle mac was amazing. Service was great, outdoor patio is lovely with acoustic singer in the summer!

One of my favorite places to go in the city for French cuisine. The escargot and oysters are continually great. All the pastas and entrees are reliably well made, and at an affordable price. Wine selection is varied enough. And the atmosphere and presentation is great. Love the old Boston feel to it, which is appropriate considering it's the second oldest restaurant in the city currently.

Spectacular food, service quality, and atmosphere. I had Henry's Soup, a medium-rare skirt steak, and the butterscotch pudding with a latte - all of which I highly recommend. The soup was a rich French Onion, the steak was delicately-prepared, and the pudding paired with coffee was a uniquely rich and savory cap to the delightful meal. We were seated at a second floor corner window table, which offered a nice view. Finally, our waitress was a delight to converse with, and served us promptly.
The only slight hiccup was when the staff delivered the wrong meal to my girlfriend, who promptly received an apology and the correct dish after pointing out the error. I can't fault the restaurant too hard; there's a reveal process to the meals that hides the food under a metal dome until it's in front of you. I can easily imagine food getting mixed up in this way during a hectic night.response / report this review -

Great historic restaurant fantastically situated between the Boston Common and downtown crossing. It is a great before-show stop on the way to the Orpheum, Boston Opera House, or any other downtown attraction. Absolutely unique and marvelous cocktail list, with an fine eclectic menu of international and american delicacies. Oysters on the half-shell are locally sources and regional selections are offered. Reasonably priced with the Prix Fix option an amazing value.

One of the worst restaurants i have been to, considering me and my family were touring Boston. Heard crazy raving reviews about this place and i thought it'd be a perfect place to bring my family for Christmas eve dinner. Overall, i was astounded by just about everything! Once they had us seated, we ordered our food as per. Shortly after some of the food arrived but we didn't recognize any of them! Turns out they had the wrong table as they were supposed to serve it to the table beside us. This happened 2 more times while waiting for the arrival of our food. When it finally came, we we're appealed over how either bland/salty our dishes were (we had the salmon, steak and fries, fish and chips and some mixed meat stew). My father thought he was going to have a heart attack on the spot! Less to say if i ever do go back to Boston, this would be one of the last few places i would ever visit.
