We get in free with our condo rental in Playacar. The staff was super nice and helpful. The facilities are beautiful and clean. And the pools are really nice. To eat, though, you have to buy the all-day pass ($50/adult and $25/small children), so if you're not going to be there all day, it's expensive, even with the free pass. And the beach itself was dirty, with small garbage and cigarette butts, etc., left around on the sand. Not sure that was the resort's fault, but it did detract from the experience.
Great beach, good food and service. Nice pools and swim up bar. Would recommend!
High prices for a mediocre hotel. Staff not very friendly. Food is bland. Nice beach.
Great ambience, very helpful and friendly staff. Limited fare for a vegetarian at the restaurants, but they gladly whipped up meals for the missus and me when we were there. Great beach and pools, with lots of seating along both. Easy access to Plays del Carmen ( cycling or cab).
Only downside is slightly dated rooms, but the other pros outweigh this one con, imo.

You literally cannot beat the location of this resort. It's on the beach and it's a 10-15 minute bike ride from the popular 5th Ave. We literally stepped out of our hotel room and were 15 steps from the beach. Overall, our experience was
Our stay here was very good, we enjoyed it. Beach is great no rock whatsoever. Morning peaceful waves of the Caribbean. I would come here again. Here is only one buffet and two restaurants. If you want the sergeants to be helpful to you then you got to tip them. There were few day that I stayed closer to my time to leave where I ran out of cash to tip for them being helpful, the service was bad for last couple day. But when I was giving great tips they were always smiling. Nevertheless that wouldn’t stop me from coming here again. Love the beach here and long walk at the ocean.

The staff is very friendly and attentive. The variety and quality of food is good. Be aware there is current construction, upgrades being done to a portion of the hotel. It has been loud, drilling out tile, etc. starting at 7:30 am. Not sure how long this will continue. Our vacation week was Oct 21
If you get the opportunity to go here please don't get sucked into buying into the vacation club. Everything I have experienced with them since doing so 2 years ago has been nothing but pain. They make promises about what type of access you will have, how nice your rooms will be and they don't deliver. The room you want will never be available, the airfare reimbursement, still waiting on it and we have been back from our trip for over two months. Worst attempt ever at providing a steady vacation place for my family. Does anyone know how to get out of it and possibly recoup my wasted money? I almost feel like they provide the worst service so you get frustrated and stop using the vacation club "benefits" but they already have your money so why would they care.

Great environment, beautiful landscape, courteous and mannerly staff (95% of them). The rooms are very clean and Cousy. Beach is relaxing with white sand. Many beach and pool activities. However, they don't offer free wifi neither do they have a great tasty variety in foods. In the aminities say free wifi but it isn't for everyone. Also, it's not really so all inclusive as you can't drink anything you choose or eat anywhere. If you are a person who loves tasty meals then you will enjoy only breakfast. Step your game up The reef this is the modern day. Wifi is such a small thing to not offer to guess as a free service. Wasn't worth the price! I rather stay at an expensive hotel and go out and buy my own food which I would enjoy.
Beautiful grounds. Beautiful rooms. Good food.
Bought the honeymoon package which included breakfast in bed and Mr and Mrs t-shirts. However did not receive either of those things everything else was good.
The beach is beautiful and the pools are nice. There are plenty of activities and my kids really enjoyed the Kids Club. The food is typical buffet style but good. In general the staff really tries to take care of you.
The only reason for three stars and not five is because it seemed like you got a different answer for questions depending on who you ask. The WIFI is not included and when we bought it we paid one price for a week and another couple paid a daily price which added up to more.
Also, there are two nicer restaurants with dress codes and the dress code depended on who you asked.
One other note for English speakers, the staff's English varies widely. Not everyone will be able to communicate with you unless you know some very basic Spanish. Also, most guests seemed to be Spanish speaking as well.
Overall it was a very good experience. We enjoyed our time with only few frustrations.

This resort has been amazing. The rooms are gorgeous, and set up as little villas. The staff has been wonderful. We have 2 children under 4, and there has been plenty to keep them entertained. The food here has been wonderful too.
Security is too problematic. No empathy shown by staff. This hotel has an agreement with hotel Paseo del Sol to let in guests from that hotel. You need a guest card for every 4 people over 2 years old. The staff contradicted each other a few times letting us in and then trying to kick us out. We had four adults and two 4 year olds so we had to call Paseo del Sol to get a new card. We got it after a few minutes but not before the chief of security confronted us in front of everyone and told us that "it'd be better if we didn't come back". Yes, you read that right.
The beach is nice but I'd go with a hotel with better customer service.
Beautiful property, nice pools and exceptionally friendly staff. The drinks are gimmicky like most all-inclusives. Pretty much fruit juice. You can "upgrade" to premium top-shelf, which actually means real drinks for a little extra (highly recommended). The beach is the highlight, Playacar is the best spot in the PDC area. Good food in a rotating buffet restaurant, with options for 3 other theme restaurants, some at no additional cost or small extra fee. Rooms were just ok, a little outdated but clean. Kids club was small but enough if you need a break, as the staff was really good with children. I will definitely come back.
Most amazing week! The staff is so helpful and extremely welcoming. Fun activities daily both pool and beachside. The rooms were clean, and the complex was beautiful. Italian Restaurant is the way to go when it comes to food, and Edie in the Lobby Bar is the best bartender around!
We just got back from a 6 day/5 night stay at the Reef with our family of 4 (2 kids ages 6 and 4). We had such an incredible time. The resort is absolutely beautiful. The food is decent enough and the drinks were never ending. The resort itself is 5 stars. The room we stayed in was more like 3 stars - the bed was too short for my 6' tall husband and the mattress was pretty hard. The view of the patio was fabulous though and they did a good job of keeping the (pretty outdated) rooms very clean. The location is great, you can take a taxi to Playa Del Carmen for 90 pesos (or it's about a 15 minute walk). I definitely recommend a stay, although avoid the time share/"vacation club" presentation with Leading Vacation Rentals. They are good sales people and almost convinced us it was a good idea, even though we went with no intention of purchasing.
It's worth mentioning that prior to our trip we saw some negative reviews on here and got nervous about the trip. We though the staff at the hotel were absolutely friendly and wonderful.
Spent a week at The Reef, Playacar and enjoyed the unique atmosphere as compared to most beach resorts in the Playa Del Carmen area. To be sure, it is a different experience from most, it is much more laid back, slower and has a tropical getaway feel - rather than an exciting beach/party feel. If you like to be left alone and relax in a tropical paradise, then this is a great place to check out. If not, you could be disappointed.
As you can see from the pictures, an improvised Cenote and Mayan Jungle replace the typical open areas in the expansive courtyard
One more note, the beaches in Playacar are much more beautiful and significantly less crowded than the beaches up in PDC.
The front end staff were incredibly rude and inhospitable both checking in and checking out. We couldn't believe customer service at an upmarket beach hotel like The Reef was so poor. Everywhere else we have stayed in Mexico had excellent customer service. The beach area was extremely crowded both in and out of the water. The upper pool area was fairly nice but also very crowded. The lower pool area with beach views was closed from 10-4 every day for scuba lessons. Drinks were not stiff. Food was mediocre. Bed was hard and lumpy. Needless to say, we will not be back.
