This company is run by incompetent scam artists. When I rented a car from them, we inquired about wanting the best insurance. We got what they recommended. It ended up conveniently not covering a common wind damage and I had to pay them $2000 EURO in order to return the car and catch my flight stateside in time. We filed a complaint and the company was to refund me half of the amount because of the horrendous customer service we received and my faith in this corporation would have been restored. However, Instead of refunding me they CHARGED ME AGAIN! And now they won’t respond and their corporate office says it will take 5 business days to process my claim. I will never use nor recommend this company and my bank is being contacted about this theft as I never authorized another outrageous charge and honestly I’ll likely be contacting my lawyer. Worst company and customer service I’ve ever received. I expect a full refund and a formal apology! Don’t rent a car from Sixt unless you want to be taken advantage of and essentially robbed.

Although the initial experience of getting the vehicle and returning it was fine, Sixt then charged me an extra day accompanied by a bill in a foreign language which I had to Google translate to figure out the reason for. I contested it and they refunded me. Then, they charged me an additional 45$ for a toll, which according to their contract, they should have warned me about (instead of taking 3 minutes trying to sell me additional insurance). Then, they added a 58$ administration fee to the fine (be aware: this is a fee which has no actual amount defined - it is located on the first page and is hidden in a paragraph on F roads). When I complained, they just stopped answering my emails and charged me anyways. I wonder what is the next charge they will add to my bill Since they seem to find something new every two weeks since I have returned from my trip.

Be careful when checking out. I asked the associate if the extra coverage was an addition to what I already paid or a small extra. They confirmed a small extra charge and it ended up doubling my bill. I contacted their customer service to resolve this and I got no response. Do not use them.

Service from staff was fantastic. The process was smooth and we got some fantastic local advice from the consultant booking out the car. Unfortunately there were some issues with the car (covered in dents and scratches but these were noted and we had an issue with a weak car battery, where after a 45min drive, and a 5min stop at a shop, the car died and the battery was too weak to turn over. Luckily we had broken down just across the road from another sixt office in Reykjavik and they jump started the car for us. We just made sure the engine was running if we pulled up anywhere.)
To be honest the high quality of service received from the staff at the airport office out shined the issues we had. Would've given 5 stars if the car was spot on.

I rented a car here for 8 days originally. My flight going home was cancelled and rebooked the next day. It was straightforward to extend the rental for an extra day for a reasonable rate with Sixt. It was not a problem to decline the included insurance so my credit card insurance covered the trip. The checkout process, and the return process worked well, and the car was great.

Sixt exceeded my expectations. Very fast pickup and return. The vehicle was immaculate and drove very well. I was a little nervous because Sixt was so much cheaper, but I ended up being very happy with my choice. The staff at KEF are very friendly and fast! I highly recommend!!

We had a really good experience with sixt. When we picked up we got a free upgrade to a nice sedan, all damage was noted already (we took photos anyway) and the member of staff gave us some great local food recommendations. No issues with the car, no damage, returned on time (more photos of course), another really friendly and helpful member of staff and off we went. We would use again!

Rented an SUV from here for travel around Iceland. They seem very understaffed. Wait times to pickup or drop off my car were unreasonably long. The car rental shuttle bus stops here. Not bad overall, but it could be better.

Not really recommendable. Despite I booked as business rental with my corporate card, the lady tried to sell me all kinds of unnecessary insurances and upgrades plus prepaid gas.
The transfer buses which should come every 15 minutes seem in fact to have a 30 min routine so sixt recommends to walk to the terminal, which takes about 8 min. All in all not as good as most professional sixt agencies at other airports.
Also: new private negative record on how long it can take to actually be processed once it was my turn for pickup

We got there later than we expected. Service was very helpful and kind. They served us really quick. 200e deposit as I was noticed before. During returning they checked with us the car. Asked if there was something wrong with car. All this took less than 10 mins. And service offered to wait for shuttle bus inside the building because it was cold outside. So I recommend!

Absolutely awful after sales service and ridiculous waiting times.
They tried to scare me into buying additional insurance when picking the car up, I had to MAKE them note down damage to car that hadn't been previously logged (and I would've been liable for), the engine warning light kept coming on and the car would lose all power - I called the office but nobody answered, and upon arrival I was told to leave it outside and unchecked because they were "too busy" (there were three people waiting).
I had to push for a receipt to show that the car was fine and no additional charges would be made to my credit card.

I definitely don't recommend this company. I've changed the time of the pick-up and accepted that I should pay extra fee (25 euro), because it was after the working hours of the office at the airport. However, as agreed, there was supposed to be someone waiting for me with the key. When I arrived the office was empty with a sheet of paper on the door that in case of emergency I should call a certain phone number. When I did it the machine answered saying that the call centre was closed (it was 7:30 PM) and in the case of emergency I should call 112. Thank you very much (later I was told that someone didn't wrote down that I changed the pick-up time - nevertheless I believe that they should at least contact someone that did not pick up a car to ask what happened). I ended up without any car, but my credit card was charged for the "service". Luckily there was another company working - what's more they haven't charged me for my age (24 y 11 m) as it would happen according to the rules of Sixt and I didn't have to pay any deposit. All in all I should be even happy that all that happened to me, but it doesn't change my opinion about the company. To be fair I should mention that the money came back to my account.

It's a really horrible company, during our trip we had some problems with their car, and when we called to customer service they didn't want to solve problem, only said car didn't have any big problem then let us keep going. After 1 hour our car was broken and they charged us huge money from our bank account without any notice and invoice. Now already passed 1 week they still didn't connect us. Also they were cheating us that we had tire insurance but they said "No, you don't have" then scanned and email our insurance documents without tire insurance to us! How a big company can do this dirty thing! I won't rent their car again.

In contrast to most reviews on Google, we had a great experience with Sixt Keflavik. We arrived pretty early in the morning to pick up our car. We had to pick a line number, waited for about 20 minutes and then got the keys to the car. The Hyundai I10 we hired in the first place wasn't available but we got a free upgrade to a bigger Chevrolet Cruze. The woman that helped us at the desk was friendly and explained to us what we needed to know about the contract. We did have to deposit 1500$ since we didn't book any insurance with the company, which is a lot but fair since we used insurance on our credit card. They reminded us to verify if all damage on the contract was on the car before we started driving so they wouldn't charge us for them. We took pictures anyway to be sure as evidence that it was already there. After a week driving 2000km, we returned it with a full tank, as asked on the pamphlet on the rear view mirror. They inspected the car for any damage and off we went. All in all a very pleasant experience and definitely unexpected with reading reviews online!

I really don't recommend this place. Sure it is cheap but they almost have everything set up so that you end up paying extra.
First of all, they charged me a fee for being below 25 years old and never told me there was a fee.
Second, they just said take the car and they never checked for any scratches or anything. They expected us to take pictures of the car as evidence, but that is not right usually other companies go with you and check everything.
Third, they charge you a 2,000 Euro deposit and they tell you that once you give back the car they give it back, But that is a lie, once I returned the car the guy told me I had to wait 20 business days for the credit card hold to be released in case I got a speeding ticket or something.
Just pick another company that will be more transparent and will tell you in advance all those things. Because Sixt clearly doesn't.t

With great hesitation I rented a Duster from Sixt. Yes - the check in process is longer than one would expect in the states, however the person who checked us in was very helpful and nice.. He took the time to review all the details and answer questions. I deferred to my rental car coverage provided by my credit card company as far as damage and they took a 2k hold on my card. I turned down the windshield and tire damage as well as prepaid fuel. He clearly explained what was normal wear and tear vs damage we would be held accountable for. I took many photos of the existing damage, which there was some. Had the car for a little less than a week and made sure to hose the dirt off prior to return. After waiting for ~10 minutes the return associate completed his walk through and emailed me the summary which outlined no new damage. From all the reviews I have read and reflecting back on my experience keep a few things in mind.. 1) If you travel outside of Reykjavik the roads turn to dirt and are very rough. 2) Cars and repairs are likely very expensive as is everything is in Iceland. 3) This is not a US rental car company you’re dealing with. Therefore, cover your a$$ and spend the time taking photos and use the mirrors available to you and look under the car before you leave. It's difficult to fight with them before you board a plane or after you get home. This is a really cool country enjoy your trip!!

Don't do it! As soon as I arrived their were issues. I initially booked through the phone and finished the booking online. In our reservation there was no mention of a deposit. When I arrived in Iceland, I was hit with a 2000 euro deposit because I was using my credit card insurance. The deposit was more than my rental! Insane. Anyways, after b**ching and moaning about it, I made the deposit. The lady told us to bring the car back with the gas tank at any level because that's the cheapest option. Great, so 10 days later I bring the car back. Oh wait a second, Sixt has 4 staff checking people in and 1 staff checking people out. After getting a ticket, waiting 20 minutes, and getting worried about my flight I decided to ask if anyone was helping people check out. They told me I could check out by leaving the keys with them. Mind you, the key situation is a whole 'nother story. They are so disorganized. See my picture of them going through a bin full of keys trying to find someones carseriously??? Back to the storyso I'm about to get out of there when they start calling numbers again. Great, they called mine. "Is your tank filled?" they ask. I reply "No, the lady told me not to bring it back that way." Great - she forgot to add that feature to my invoice. I get angry, Sixt doesn't like me getting loud. The lady next to the guy who is serving me tries to step in. Long story short, the nice guy who served me drove me to the gas station which is a minute away from Sixt so that I can fill the tank myself and not get screwed by them. He then dropped us off at the airport. I really appreciated his effort. In reality, it's a nice guy who works at a crappy companyunfortunately.

I will never rent from SIXT again. They had horrible customer service at this location. When picking up the car the wait was almost an hour with one person ahead of me when I walked in. There were about 6 staff members around and only 2 checking in customers. When I returned the vehicle he found a tiny scratch on the bumper. Not more then an inch long and hardly noticeable. They want to charge me over $600 Canadian for the damage. Beware of this location. If you read the rest of the reviews you'll see this is common.

DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT rent from Sixt!!!!! Take heed from previous 1 star reviews!! I never write reviews, but this place is AWFUL!!! We booked a car months ahead time. When we artived, we waited 45 minutes for service, then another 45 minutes for the keys. Dozens of other people were waiting as well. There were lots of employees milling about, but hardly anyone left with a car. I read the reviews below, about huge extra charges upon return and walked next door to Enterprise, and was out with a car for the same price and friendly service within 10 minutes.

I guess these many 1star reviews already say something about this company. Here is my story:

Booked a car with 4000km (2500miles) and drove about 1000km (600miles). When I was returning the car, the worker found 1cm and 5 cm scratch under the bumper and claimed that I made them. As I would never think of checking small scratches under the bumper that look like a dirt , I could not prove them it was not me.

At first they claim that for each scratch I should pay $500, $1000 in total . Then, somehow decided that even $500 is enough.

In theory, now they can charge $1000 for each customer who takes that car, because no one will check 1 cm scratch under the bumper.

Beware!!! Cheap turns out expensive in the end. Terrible experience. They take advantage of being at the airport so when you drop off the car they delay it and come up with fees to charge you. Because I did not want to lose my flight I agreed, but what a scam!! Please consider other options to rent a car, I've heard similar experiences from the US locations too. Just do a little digging and all the horror stories come up. Take pictures of every part of the car when you get it first I know I wish I did.

I'm not an employee or shareholder, but I'll sure sound like one. These guys were great. Apparently, a common mistake is booking a rental in Reykjavik vice Keflavik, I did that. Hytham was able to fix my mess up in minutes. He also offered us unlimited mileage which ended up saving us hundreds of dollars. Pick up and drop off were just as easy as I've experienced in the states (better than some). Recommend walking from the terminal rather than waiting for the bus, its pretty close.

We booked with SIXT because it appeared to be the best deal around. The car was F-road certified, it was equipped with studded snow tires, it had plenty of room for our gear, and was significantly less expensive than the competitors. We booked the vehicle in order to take Rt 1 around the country, and this was the catch. The car came with a set number of kilometers which we didn't even think to compare against the total kilometers on the Rt; had we done this we would see that the total number of kilometers needed to complete our trip--which was not an irrationally high distance given the stated nature of our trip--fell extremely short of our given miles. At a rate of 40 cents per additional mile we found ourselves paying the price of the rental over again in overage fees. To add, the vehicle we rented was specifically for longer ranged trips as it was a diesel that excelled at highway miles and was specifically for the more extreme conditions found away from the cities. I will admit it was on us to read the fine print which we failed to do in our excitement to tour Iceland, but this failure left us with what I feel was an exorbitant fee following up on the return of the car. Additionally,in hind site, it appeared that all was planned. There was a $2000 dollar deposit and upon the return of the vehicle, it was inspected for damages and invoiced at a late date when we had left the country making any dispute of deceptive fees very difficult.
While I do take blame for our mistake, I will say that it was only after reading the fine print and comparing those specifics to the extrapolated distance of our proposed route that we realized we had been completely taken advantage of. We realize that we will not be getting our money back and we have been forced to pay the fee, but in taking time to write this, we hope to help others avoid both this rental company as well as finding themselves in the unfortunate predicament we found ourselves in at the end of an otherwise amazing trip.
We have already contacted the company who published our tour guide (Lonely Planet) to inform them to make note of deceptive pricing pertaining to this company so that others will be forewarned. I will also be posting this response to TripAdvisor, Google+ review and other travel forums so that others who are new to traveling and adventuring may avoid what happened to us.

Our car worked great for the 11 day rental duration, no problems there. We did not take on the extra insurance, I was a bit nervous about this, but we didn't have any damage, and made sure the previous small damage on the vehicle was noted before leaving, and upon checking back in the guy looked at it and said everything was fine. The only downside was the mileage allotment they gave us was not that high, so we had to pay an extra $80 for unlimited mileage for rental period. Overall the price was decent. I would rent from them again. Advice, definitely check with your credit card company on what their rental coverage actually covers on the car. I could foresee this being a serious nightmare if you got some damage, whether your fault or someone elses. Especially if you were in a rush to catch a flight.

It's a good, inexpensive place to rent a car in Iceland. Make sure that before you take the car you check it all over for scratches or other damage and tell the employees if you find something and take pictures. That way you won't get charged for damage other people caused when you return the car after your trip.
