Like everyone else here complaining, they will try to scam you into almost forcing you to get their most expensive insurance. All excuses are good, it’s windy, we have bad roads, etc. When you return the car if there is a minor scratch we will charge you a lot etc etc. They are crooks! The car ended up being more than doubled the amount presented by Priceline when I booked. Ridiculous stay away or make sure you are covered with your own insurance
Helpful as always. Rented the cheapest, mini vehicle. Did great on the main roads and gravel roads. Can prob get anywhere reasonable in it and even some not so reasonable places, such as the lava rock house on the Golden Circle. Of course they wanted us to buy extra insurance, but we decline. FYI, your car insurance usually covers rentals, folks.
First I thought, cueing is bad. Turned out getting the keys was even worse. Took us more than 30 minutes to get them, once we were at the desk. Just so you know, we had made a reservation months ahead.
The receptionist was a crook! She scared us to death with "volcanic particles" that can scratch the paint on the car which could lead to a charge up to 20,000 euros. That is bull because even under extreme windy weather conditions on the south coast, it did nothing to our car!
Plus she gave us incorrect insurance fees where not only it was incorrect in the currency we wanted to pay but also we were eventually charged in Icelandic Krona, which cost us even more.
What is also outstanding is that the insurance fees were more than the initial price we paid for the car.
I definitely do NOT recommend renting a car with them! Iceland is expensive enough so keep your money away from them!
Utterly dissatisfied with my car lease. Chose AVIS for better prices and service but turned out it was worse than other companies I've previously rented from.
Had initially rented a Ford Fiesta for 112£ for 5 days online, with basic damage waiver insurance but was 'threatened' by the staff once arriving at pick-up to purchase extra insurance. In fact, they forced me to buy a collision damage insurance as well as an insurance for 'natural damages' (supposedly sand that can scratch the paint of the car or ashes from the volcanoes), which clearly WASN'T needed! Nature in Iceland is indeed different than other European countries but AVIS is clearly trying to make extra money out of this! I was thus charged an extra 170£ on my card - despite initially saying this would cost me 150£. Stay away from them if you do not want to waste your money!!!
A little slow at pickup. No sense of urgency. Return was quick and efficient. Staff was friendly.
At the pickup window was given a hard sell on dust storm insurance despite repeatedly telling them that I would be using my credit card insurance. Eventually got the car and had no problems until drop off, where it was claimed I had done off-road driving (driving on F-marked highways are illegal in non-suv cars) and would be liable for a 100000 ISK fine as a result. The agent told me that if I agreed to the fine they would provide me with documentation that I could then use on an insurance claim. Though I hadn’t researched the driving laws in iceland I was fairly certain that none of the golden circle highways had been marked F. After probing and asking for more information about the fine it was clear that the rental agent was being forced by a manager to try to enforce this fine based on flimsy or incomplete information. (The F road they claimed I had driven on was 100 km east of the furthest point I had driven). After I showed them this on the map, I managed to have the fine removed from my rental contract, but this was a very stressful end to an otherwise enjoyable trip.
Very poor customer service, unfriendly and slow. The worst thing is that when they take care of you, they want to sell you everything. Read well what is signed. If you buy some extra product, they make you sign in haste with the excuse that there are many people waiting and have already gotten it to you, because the dependents charge for commission. It has happened to us and now it is impossible to claim why it is what we signed, we have tried anyway. I do not recommend Avis or Payless in Iceland, the cheap ends up going very expensive. Very little respect.
Long lines at pickup, and literally one of the most inefficient return processes. The staff behind the counter has to walk back and forth between the office and cars for each return. Utterly stupid. Could be completed twice as fast by using mobile devices.
Prepare to be browbeaten if you do not opt for the numerous insurance products or purchase the full tank of gas optionthe whole cross sell process equated to an hour wait and our only negative experience in Iceland. Ironically, I avoided other low cost options hoping to avoid this hassle akin to the extended warranty sell at the car dealership. being told "that I will be held personally responsible for all damages" if I do not purchase the coverage is a fear tactic that works with others I guess. Would never opt for Avis in Iceland again. Ps the car battery died at our first stop!
Got an excellent almost brand new car; VW polo. The car drove really well, good acceleration, braking, and responsiveness on turning.
The services at the counter for both pick up and return were friendly, speedy, and professional.
After this experience, I won't be renting from any other company in iceland.
No shuttle back to the airport when you return the car. You have to walk around 400 meters to get back to the airport on foot. Luggage is not the only problem, also cold, rain and heavy wind. They should offer a free transportation to the airport.
Bad customer service, be aware of a scam in which they try to charge you for a small pit in the windscreen. The windscreen had numerous repaired pits, but they tell you that they have to replace the whole screen for around 700 euros. Besides that, the person at the drop off counter didn't want to sign or write down that the whole car is oke except for the windscreen. The manager Halldor Vilberg Omarsson was arrogant. At the desk of Avis the guy confirmed this problem, but not officially on paper. I had to file a complaint by email. Be aware of this scam by budget / Avis rental!

This pit is one of the few small pits on a 105.000 km car which Carglass repairs for around 50 euros. Had to block my creditcard to prevent high were charged. Good choice of cars, the staff could be a bit more pleasant but this is one of the better car rental company's in Iceland. They did offer us a free upgrade which was well received as it was deep winter and we got a large 4 wheel drive upgrade.
