We had high hopes for this rental service. At first the place in Reykjavik was impossible to find. Once at the office the guy was friendly and explained everything which was nice. We had no major issues with the car until the last day when it broke down on its own at 11pm and we still had to drive all night to get to the airport.
We called customer service and at first no answered the phone, later the guy working there, picked up the phone but didn't explain what we should do. After half an hour a mechanic drove from a near by town(15km away) and charged us 25000ick for the service. Neither customer service nor mechanic informed us of the price before and we thought that the insure covers it. We had no luck trying to call the customer service again, due to them rejecting our calls or getting angry and were hanging up every time we called. The next morning we had the same issue with the car twice, but this time we managed to still start the car. After returning it, they blamed us for the issue and denied their involvement. We ended up not receiving any compensation.
Don't know about other rental services, but here the customer service and staff friendliness is one of the worst I dealt with so far.
I do not recommend this company.
We waited about a half an hour at the airport for the drivers to arrive, then it was about a 10 minute drive to an offsite location. Two men driving two women in a van to an unknown location did not make us comfortable.
The big problem was this car was not the 4x4 Suzuki jimny I booked. It was an older model Honda Tucson with high mileage, old worn out interior, wiper blades that needed to be changed, and a trunk that kept getting stuck and didn’t open half the time. If I wasn’t so sleep deprived or if I had a longer trip, I would have returned.
In the future, I will rent from a mainstream company with a location at the airport.
Pros
Were at the airport (at 4am) to pick us up and take us to their office
Entire process of obtaining the car was quick
Provided transportation back to the airport when returning the rental car
Cons
We reserved a 2018 Hyundai Tuscon, we ended up with a Honda CRV that was many (?6-8) years old and had one door that was a different color than the rest. Said it was the "only one they had". The Honda ran beautifully the entire trip, so I can't make too much of a fuss, but we certainly overpaid for the level of vehicle we rented. They were completely unapologetic about it.
The staff is helpful and give important safety tips when renting a vehicle in Iceland. The vehicle we rented was in good condition and performed very well in the extreme conditions that Iceland presents. A 4x4 vehicle is a must if you plan on exploring the natural wonders the country has to offer. This company has a free shuttle service from the airport to their office. There prices are reasonable as well. I highly recommend them.
I last visited them in March of 2018.
Had an interesting experience with this company. Arriving at the airport they were there to pick us up and take us to the office to get our car. When we arrived they told us that we would be getting a different car than what we ordered for safety reasons and that it was a 2011 and had brand new studded tires on it and a full tank of gas.. it literally was and had none of those things. Tires were bald, car was actually a 2006 with over 340xxxkms on it and half a tank of gas. Because we picked it up in the dark we weren’t given a once over opportunityand didn’t notice these things and once it did get light out there was a lot of damage to the car in dents and scratches. We took a lot of pictures because they tell you you will be charged for any new damage. They also but an insane hold amount on our credit card, over $2600! We also emailed right away to let them know that this definitely wasn’t the vehicle we were told we were getting. After reading reviews of the company, I could see the potential for a lot of issues to come up. When we went to return the car they told us it should’ve been returned the day before. Thank god I had emails to show that the original date was incorrect and we had emailed for a change and the dates should have been shifted. Regardless of all this the car did get us from A to B which was the most important. I would not however recommend this company and would not use them again if I go back to Iceland. Spend a bit more and go to a more reliable company.
Overall the only good thing about our rental vehicle was that it got us from Point A to Point B. We were given a Nissan Patrol.
The good: Our pickup from the airport was on time, we were physically able to fit 6 adults and luggage, heat and radio worked, GPS was accurate and helpful.
The bad: We ordered a vehicle that would fit 7 adults and 4 checked bags, yet only barely fit 6 adults and 3 checked bags (we requested the spare room for comfort + carry-on bags and that didn't happen). The outside handle stuck so doors wouldn't close unless pushed a certain way. The light for our rear license plate was dangling by its cords. The lock/unlock keypad did not work so we had to manually do this every time. Also the suspension was non-existent.
The ugly: Wiper fluid lines were disconnected. Luckily we had 2 people familiar with cars to fix this problem. The brakes/rotors were grinding at the beginning of our trip, and by the end of it we had to slow down our vehicle by down-shifting, making the engine do the work. THIS IS SO BAD FOR THE ENGINE but we also didn't want to die.
I would not recommend using Ice Rental 4x4. They were late on our arriving at the airport, the baby seat wasn't installed in the car and the nav system (GPS) had a partially broken screen and not up dated.
They charged me a full tank while returning the car with 3/4 tank and called it "a fee".
So I would not recommend this service at all!
Unfortunately our experience with Icerental was really disappointing from start to end:
- When we made the reservation we specified our flight to make sure they will pick us up on time at the airport, however when we got to the airport there was no sign of them and after calling them we had to wait for around half an hour for them to arrive.
- Once in the office, they explained to us we should drop off the car on their office on our last day, while we were pretty sure we had selected the airport on the reservation. Later on we double checked and sent them a message explaining that we were indeed meant to leave the car at the airport and letting them know what time we would be there for our flight back. We got no answer.
- The car was fine, but the windscreen wipers were worn out and whenever we had rain/ snow (quite often during our week) it was really hard to see.
- On the third day of the trip the GPS suddenly stopped working, we sent them a message about this as kind of relied on it. Again, no answer, so we had to use our phones GPS and data to get directions instead.
Just for the record, we had previously contacted them through Facebook messenger before we did the reservation to ask them what car they suggested, and they took ONE HOUR to answer, yet when we contacted them during out trip they completely ignored us for days.
- On the day of our departure, since we had not heard from them yet, we called them on the phone to let them know that we were on our way to the airport and that we needed them to pick up the car. They asked several times exactly where we were trying to get us to bring the car to them instead, once we insisted we were heading to the airport they asked for how long we would be there (since I have seen reviews mentioning they made people wait for almost an hour in the same circumstances, I told them we were late for our flight, which was also true, and that we had to check in straight away so we needed them to be there on time. They told me they were on their way and to call them after I arrived at the airport. Once there, I called them again to let them know, and the guy wasn't still there and started telling me that he had another group to pick up, etc. I repeated to him that we were late and that I had informed him about the time we were leaving several times. He told me that he was "making us a favour" by picking the car at the airport at that time of the day (9.30 am), even though that was the actual condition in our reservation. He finally told us to just leave the car at the airport parking with the keys in as he was going to be late.
There was a slight problem with the handbrake on the first car so they drove a replacement and better car to us for 9am the next morning. Delivered to our accommodation with no quibble. When we handed the car back at the end of the holiday it was taken without any fuss and they offered to take our rubbish to the bins for us. So overall could not have been happier and I will definitely come back to this company on our next visit to Iceland
Great experience with this company. Highly recommended. Pick up from the airport and drop off on the way back. All paperwork prompt and fast. All the more great prices as for 4x4 cars. We book Suzuki Jimmy, but were upgraded to Dacia Duster, as they said it'll be safer. Will definitely book again.
Great company with very kind and helpful staff. They were completely understanding and so helpful to us. The car was a great little car, perfect for what we needed and we werw sad to leave it behind. Highly recommend this company :-) thanks so much!
Great 4x4 car rental in Iceland which offers automatic cars and studded tires without extra costs (really handy here with the icy roads in the winter). They also offer an airport shuttle for free, great flexibility and service. Thanks!
Rented from them again after a great experience last year. This time was equally perfect. Prompt pickup at the airport; fast, efficient rental car pickup. When I returned it, they didn’t care the car was all muddy, just asked if I’d had a good time. Would definitely rent from them again.
We rented an SUV from here and were very happy with our experience. They pick you up at the airport - look for a person holding a sign with the IceRental logo. They shuttle you back to the rental office, which is hidden behind the airport in a warehouse district type place. Filling out the paperwork is relatively painless, and off you go in your vehicle. Our SUV got upgraded to a 2017 because they were out of what we originally requested, and the vehicle was perfect. We returned the vehicle without incident (finding the rental office on the way back was difficult - be sure to drop a GPS marker!) and they shuttled us back to the airport and sent us on our way. Highly recommended.
They did not check our car before hiring it. We hired a Ford Expedition with a broken rim. First we had a tire flat because of that (for coincidence the tire was very old). After that we were losing pressure all the journey and finally we find out a break on the rim with a mechanic in Akureyri. The rental company responded quite good and effective in order to repair but the manners were really rude (shouting when we were talking via telephone) and any compenstion at all. Apart from that they lied to us: they said it was a brand new car which it wasn't (210000 km), very dirty the interiors for rim repair they said they were bringing a new onealso a lie (it was welded). Finally when we returned the car they sent someone who didn't know anything about the story so we couldn't talk about it and of course any compensation. so so dissapointing this ice rental 4x4
good value for money although not great service at rentals.
I am not one for writing bad reviews but Icerental 4x4 truly deserves 1 star. Customer service was horrible. Spend the extra money and avoid this company at all costs!
Pros: Competitive pricing, the car itself lasted for our 9 day trip without many issues
Cons: Driver was >30 minutes late to pick us up from the airport. When we arrived we were told that the car wasn't ready for us and had to wait an additional hour before we received a quickly cleaned car. We were told multiple times "only 15 more minutes till your car is here." Upon attempting to return the car had to wait 20 minutes before anyone at the front desk even showed up to help. Windshield wipers in back didn't work
We rented a Nissan Patrol and fell in love with this car. It was a little older, but it was great on the ring road and great on the pist (F35, F26, ) including the fords. The owner gave us good advice about the routes and was very supportive. We will rent there again.
"You get what you give". VALUE FOR MONEY!
If you cannot afford very expensive car rental companies or as us you simply don't want to pay thousands of bucks just for hiring a car for a couple days, this is the place to rent a car. You will get a very good car, which does its jobs totally fine. Of course, it is not the latest model with all high tech stuff. If you do need that, go to a different place. But if you are a budget traveler, and can live with a good car, not an outstanding one, this place is more than fine. The service and pick up was friendly and uncomplicated. We had a request regarding the drop-off date, and it turned out that the service and understanding were more than kind and very flexible.
I think if you can evaluate what you will get for what you paid, and if you have experiences with other countries and car rental companies, you will realize that this company is a great deal.
Long Story Short: 0 stars; never, ever rent from this company.
I'll start by saying I never, ever write negative reviews. One of the worst experiences of customer service in my life. If I could rate this company 0 stars, I would. We booked our trip to Iceland in August, so we had been looking forward to exploring southern Iceland for a long time, in our own vehicle. We had requested a Subaru Forester or equivalent, because we knew we had a ton of driving and wanted a fuel efficient vehicle. The only car they had left was a 2005 Jeep Cherokee, which I know from owning one in the past, has absolute terrible gas mileage. We parked our car in Reyk. and toured around the city that whole day, and when we got back to our car it was dead - not prompted by anything. The gentleman that talked to us on the phone was highly annoyed that this had happened and "sent someone" to come and jump us. The man rudely showed us, in a patronizing way, how to turn off the interior lights - thinking that it was our fault the battery died. "American cars have lots of buttons, very complicated," was said probably 6+ times, even though we all are American and own American cars. A couple of days later, many of the dashboard lights started to blink and make noise every minute. We went to get gas and check the oil, there was absolutely zero oil in the car - dipstick was clean. Got back into the car after purchasing our own oil, and car wouldn't start again. Called emergency number, wouldn't answer. Guy still says he doesn't get any phone calls, even though he has his phone on him "24/7". Had to buy jumper cables and get 2 very nice Icelandic men to help. Called the next morning to get a new vehicle sent to us and were told that he called a local mechanic to take a look at our car and that he would be waiting for us. As expected, drove to the mechanic and mechanic had never been called.
At the end of our amazing trip (minus the car), we returned the car as we had found it. Checked the car, found a scratch on the right bumper that had already been on the Jeep and was on the check in sheet, and was charged $450 USD on the credit card. Because the scratch was already there, I highly doubt they will repair it.
I'm so incredibly disappointed in the customer service that we received from this company. The misogyny that this company portrayed was highly inexcusable and if we would've had one of our significant others with us, we doubt these problems and solutions would've come about. I recommend anyone who is thinking of renting with this company to find a new company who is based on the satisfaction of their customers and NOT based on scamming tourists out of a good, Icelandic experience.
This was the worst customer service I have EVER experienced. I wish I could give 0 stars. Several months prior to our arrival date, we requested a Subaru from this company. When we arrived, we were given a 2005 Jeep Cherokee. Didn't seem like a big deal at the time. The rear hatch wouldn't stay up on its own, which made loading it difficult, but that wasn't the end of the world. However, we drove into the city and explored for a few hours. When we returned to the car, it wouldn't start - dead battery. We called the company and they were incredibly rude, but said they would send someone over in 10 minutes. We made 3 phone calls and waited in the car for an hour and a half before someone finally showed up to help. Wouldn't even tell us his name, just said that we must not understand American cars (to a group of 4 Americans), jumped the car, and left. Two days later, we were driving to Hofn (about 5 1/2 hours east of Reykjavik) and the car started to ding at us every minute or so. Both the oil light and the airbag light were flashing. We stopped to get gas in Hofn and decided to check the oil. It was absolutely bone dry. We purchased 2 liters of oil (which wasn't even close to filling it, but did the job) and went to leave. The car wouldn't start. It had been about 30 minutes since the car had last been running and we knew that all the lights were off, since we had been next to the vehicle the entire time. We tried to call the company repeatedly and they never answered. Finally, a kind Icelander helped us jumpstart the vehicle. The next morning, we called the company from our guesthouse. Again, the person we spoke to was rude and repeated that we must not understand the "complicated American vehicle," but he gave us the name of a nearby mechanic to take it to and said he would call them to let them know we were coming. When we got to the mechanic, he gave us a blank look - the rental company had not talked to him at all. He tried to call the rental company and no one answered. Thankfully, we got through the rest of the trip with no further problems with the car. When we returned the vehicle, we tried to tell the company about the problems we had. The people we talked to refused to hear our complaints and repeated their mantra about these complicated American cars with all their buttons. They also claimed we could not possibly have tried to call when we had problems because they carry the phone 24/7 and never heard it ring. Stay away from this company!
The only rental I found that guaranteed studded tires on all there 4x4s. If your in iceland and you don't do that you'll probably regret it.
We were here the day after they got 50cm of snow, 5 days later the city roads still weren't really passable imo in a fwd vehicle.
We were picked up at the airport even though our flight was delayed, the vehicle was good condition, but a but older, the important thing was the 4x4 worked. I'd use them again, we had a Suzuki vitara it did the trick for some mild off roading.
Our meeting time was at 6am and our driver, Marlo(?) was already there waiting for us at the arrivals hall.
From the airport, I think it was a 5 min drive to their office where we got our car.
We initially were supposed to get a Subaru Forester but got a Nissan XTrail instead.
The car was okay but you know that it was a bit old. The back windshield wiper didn't work, which proved challenging in the Iceland weather. The back passenger window didn't open. The windshield took a while to defog. Little things that maybe wouldn't matter in the summer, but mattered a bit since we went during the winter months.
We did a bit of research and I think this company offered the most competitive rates.
Unlimited mileage was included.
Staff was awesome, friendly and super helpful. Just wished we were given a better car. :)
Pick up time at airport was 5:00am. Didn't get picked up until about 5:40am. We got an upgrade on our car to a newer one - overall good condition but the windshield wipers were terrible. At times we couldn't see a thing. The staff was friendly, would probably use company again if I knew the car would have good windshield wipers .. One of the cheaper rental companies in Iceland
