I have rented many many times cars. I had never had a worst experience than this one. Staff on the pickup was unable to answer my questions about insurance coverage by replying to my questions with "it supposed to be" making me feel not so confident on what I have purchased.
On the return I was charged for a chipped windshield I didn't break. We got the car with 10cm of snow left on a dark parking, how I was supposed to see the damage? The agent charging me for the supposed damage was more than rude.
Really the worst rental experience. I hope you they take care about the staff at the counter as they are the image of the company, which now, looks so bad.
We rented from green motion for a few days. On returning the car there was a tiny crack in the bumper which we had not noticed but were happy to pay for. They tried to claim for stone chips and countless other issues that were nothing to do with us but present before we rented the car. Would never rent from them again.
I would strongly advise against renting from this company or at least suggest you go into this rental agreement knowing full well that you might lose your entire deposit.
They have cheap rates for car rentals but will say that you damaged their car. Mind you the roads are not entirely paved in the country. I’d suggest getting the biggest insurance package (to which you’re better off renting from a reputable company that won’t cheat you) or just not renting at all.
I was charged $2200 for kicks on the driver door. You could replace an entire car door or two for that price.
Be careful!
Service was good - staff do the usual trick of pressure to get extra insurance which is to be expected from a cheaper priced rental company.
There were some small paint chips that weren't on the inspection form, so as with any rental company make sure you allow yourself time to inspect the car thoroughly to avoid any charges for damage you didn't cause. I've read reviews from people that notice paint chips and don't report them and complain when they get charged, when that is 100% their fault. Don't get pressured to sign immediately - thoroughly inspect the entire car including undercarriage and note extra damage no matter how small.
I was hesitant to use them due to some bad reviews but I would definitely consider using them again.
AVOID THIS COMPANY. They are a total fraud. In September 2017 I visited Iceland with my family and rented a car from Green Motion. I was given a car, which had numerous; grain sized chips all around and major scuffs to front and back bumper. I inspected the car for damage but due to numerous small chips I didn’t think much of it and just mentioned it to the attendant. When I was returning my car the attendant flagged a chip no more than the size of “A Grain of Rice”. I told him that the car has these all over and I did not inspect for these grain sized chips. After arguing for over half an hour and fearing that I will miss my flight I gave in. They charged me over $2,700 for a chip the size of a rice grain…, (you can paint the whole car for this much)which was not even caused by me. I have since contested this charge with my credit card company, but travelers beware these people are a total scam. Upon my arrival in USA, I read so many other reviews alleging the same scam. Do yourself a favor and avoid this fraud of a company. Shame on you Green motion.
Got picked up at the airport no problem took us to the car rental pick-up. It seems a bit busy for only one person working for pickup and drop-off. So be very patient. It was a bit unfortunate that the back windshield wiper was broken Stuck in the Middle. So it was very distracting and when it was raining we couldn't see anything at the back. Also placing the stickers on the dash reflected way too much in the front windshield. Trying to look at the window all you would see with stickers. Other than that everything else is great
Never rent a car in Green Motion rental car in Iceland
I went to Iceland with my family for a quick 5 day vacation for Labor Day weekend this summer. After getting picked up at the airport and being ferried 30 minutes away to the Green Motion Car Hire garage and waiting another 30 minutes to get called to pick up my car, I chose not to get the absurd ~$2300 "premium insurance" because I've always been a careful driver, and my credit card covers it.
However, after getting my keys, I was shown my car which was outside in the pouring rain, and no Green Motion employee came to inspect the car with me! And even though I took pictures, it was quite difficult to do any type of proper inspection in the pouring rainthis will be important later. In addition, as soon as I pulled out to pick up the rest of my family which I had left at the airport, I found that they had given me a car with virtually no gas, with only for 5 Km. Unfortunately, when I went to three various gas stations to refill, but none of them would take any of my chip and non chip credit cards, and there was no one to help me, so I had to waste another hour of fruitless efforts and driving back to Green Motion to demand they fill up the gas tank for me.
Thankfully my vacation itself was quite lovely - Iceland is beautiful! However, upon returning my car to Green Motion, even though I took quite a comprehensive set of photos of the car's initial damages, Green Motion charged me for a tiny damage to the paint that wasn't even 1/3 the size of a standard American penny. Unfortunately my photos that I took of the front end of the cover didn't cover that one section, and so I couldn't prove that it wasn't me. They then tried to charge me for another similar nick, but thankfully I did have a photo for that damage, and they had no choice but to let it go.
They then charged me the full ~$2300 insurance policy until they could get the damage assessed by a local garage. Recently the full bill has come out to be $1300 for the small nick, which is absolutely ABSURD, especially seeing as how I've talked to multiple car garages who said they would all quote damages at ~$200-$300. I will now be contesting this claim with my credit card insurance providers to get my due justice, but BUYER BEWARE - Green Motion will do everything they can to squeeze every single bit of money out of you that I can.
Sadly it wasn't until after I had this experience that I did my research and realized this is a common problem with Green Motion all around the world, but particularly their outpost in Iceland. Check Trip Advisor if you don't believe me
Fraud alert, a lot of these reviews are fake. Why would Green Motion have 350+ reviews when Avis, Hertz, and National Car rental each have 12 or less? Why would hundreds of people call out "Lucas" by name? Note that most of the 1 star reviews seem to tell similar stories to the one that we experienced.
Green motion charged us £1400 for microscopic damage could never have possibly seen, and delayed us so we missed our flight, incurring an additional cost of £900. Google "Guardian Green Motion" and you will find other stories that mirror what happened to us.
The Rekjavik Green Motion lot has almost no lights, and it is frequently dumping rain. Your chances of finding and making note of all of the dents and dings to your rental car before you leave the lot are low.
Later when you return the car, damage will magically appear that you could never have possibly caused. Every other person dropping off a car at the same time as us was going through the same routine, being shown obscure damage in places like under the bumper, on the under carriage, etc, and being told they needed to pay for it. On the ride to the airport, other travelers also felt there was no way they would have caused this. And honestly, who checks the undercarriage of their car before renting it??
We have not been only travelers that missed our flights due to the slow pick up. Our airline would not give us tickets on a later flight, and we had to pay for another night in hotel, plus meals, at a cost of £900
Note that the "repairs" that you are charged for are way out of proportion to what they would cost anywhere else.
Sure, you can buy surplus insurance, but what is the point? Why not rent from a company that doesn't have bad faith in the first place? We are guessing that Green Motion charges every customer for the same dent over and over.
Green Motion was easy to work with. Free airport shuttle, reasonably priced (by Iceland standards of course) and had absolutely no problems with the car even after putting hundreds of miles on it traveling around Iceland for two weeks. They provided great customer support and spent a lot of time answering questions and preparing me for my first car rental & my first time in Iceland. I would definitely recommend.
This is the WORST car rental place I have ever had rented from. If I could give ZERO stars I wouldn't hesistae. We rented a hotspot for the vehicle and it never worked. We wanted the charge reversed upon return of the rental vehicle and apparently they can not "refund charges" at the rental locations. You have to leave the country and then send an email disputing the fees. We advised the lady that we weren't comfortable with that process and she assured us that we would be contacted via email within 24-48 hours. We have written to them on several occasion with no response. The company and the people that work there are dishonest and thieves. I would NOT rent from this company or you will find yourself in the same position I am in. I guess I will dispute all charges with my credit card company. It's sad that they have put me in this position.
NEVER AGAIN!
Wait times were long when collecting, and the car was a nail (engine warning light constantly, fuel guage didn't work, other dashboard fault lights). However, it was affordable. Don't fall for the high pressure up selling of the sand storm insurance. If sand storms were that common and destructive, why aren't all the cars battered?
As the people have mentioned, a complete claim SCAM. The owner must have ownership in the garage they do the repairs in. To be specific for future renters I'll list some important points:
1) Rental location is a few kms from the airport so you have to locate the driver and then get a ride from him there. Shuttles were 10-20 minutes wait depending.
2) Upon returning the vehicle and not seeing any damages. I was informed that the windshield would need to be replaced. After a cleaning of a dime sized area, i was shown 2 small chips slightly larger than a pen tip. No cracking. Upon pushing the employee further to justify it, they mentioned that they might not replace the windshield for a while yet because its still safe. But did they bill me for a full windshield replacement. Yes.
Not worth the risk dealing with this company, completely different than anything Ive seen in the car rental market.
Just to point some main issues, each one assessed from 1 to 5:
1. Pick-up/drop off. 5-.
Green Motion meets you in the airport and within couple of minutes drives you to the office. They help with the baggage, which is nice. The only disadvantage is that too many passengers in the car, so would better use two cars
2. Office, contract sign. 2.
Not a long line, they have an electronic queue. The staff is nice and explaining the details.
But! In the description of the damage which car has was only marked everything on one side of the car. Another side was marked as without any damage. Which was not the case. In this case Green Motion asked me to make a pictures of damage not mentioned in the list and revert back to them showing.
Quite disappointing.
Be careful!
The only way to avoid the problem when drop off the car is to check the car at the beginning and compare with the list of damage provided by Green Motion. Will take you 10-15 minutes more but will let you avoid headache.
Also would recommend to buy full coverage (exclude deductible) when you're booking the car. Looks like Green Motion has higher prices.
3. Car quality. 4-.
Good for the mileage it has. Our Suzuki Grand Vitara had 65.000 km. Everything worked fine except the fuel tank lid, which has to be opened by pulling the arm. Which worked only after being pulled many times. Quite disappointing to spend time on that on a gas station.
Conclusion: you can use Green Motion service, checking all the papers and car before you drive from their office.
Absolute shambles First car they tried to give was old, had ice on the inside of the windshield. Wipers stopped working after a few minutes. The second car given to us was newer, but sounded as if it was running on only three cylinders Any type of gradient and the car would slow down in any gear higher than 4. Oh and the cost of fuel. 600km. In this car almost 10000kr! Stay away from these cowboys
