We booked a double room for 3 people, with 3 of us present at the desk. They said everything was good, and when we entered our room, it had a single twin bed. No effort was made to correct this problem, and the employee, Ramiro, said we would not be getting a refund. Unacceptable customer experience.

Tidy and clean. Walls are thin so you van hear sounds from next door room. Location is 45 minutes by walk from main square. Subway station near by if you don't want to walk.

We booked this hotel mainly for the location; the Madrid Metro is around the corner while plenty of top notch restaurants and cafes are well within walking distance.

However, the Gran Versalles offered so much more than just civic accessibility: foremost, its reception and cleaning staff were helpful, competent, and courteous - greetings and pleasantries are returned, and advice offered gladly, in the beautifully stylish lobby. Provision was made for our infant at all junctures.

Our room managed to be cosy, comfortable yet modern at the same time. We were in a room described as 'standard', but which was superbly appointed with an impressively tiled bathroom. The price was reasonable: we paid an average of €90 per night, for four nights including breakfast. This was in early October when Madrid remains cool and generally sunny.

The breakfast was for the most part wonderful - plenty of fruits, cold cuts, cheeses, pastries, hot and cold beverages, yogurts, figs, and breads. However the exception (for which I deduct a star) were the cooked dishes which were sometimes insufficiently heated by the chef, especially the Spanish omelette which was cold through mere minutes after being placed.

This single and easily corrected flaw aside - the Gran Versalles was a great and memorable experience. My wife and I will return when the opportunity presents itself.
