Went to hear back in 2000. He used to be called beaches Varadero by sandals resorts. It was one of the best holidays of my life.

1. The Resort is now called - Hotel Aquaz Azules
We read a lot of reviews - the good and the bad and the very bad. We booked it anyway and were pleasantly surprised by what we got. We stayed there from March 7. to March 21.2016.We payed for a standard Room.( $ 1400 ea for 2 weeks). We got a real King size bed, Air Condition worked the entire time, Toilet with seat,we had hot water the entire time. We were on the third floor- so we would of loved a bit more water pressure for the shower.We also had an Ocean view. :-) beautiful.
The food at the Buffet was the best we had in Cuba so far.( This was our 4th trip to Cuba).The food at the Ocean Grill was delicious( fresh grilled -chicken,fish,fruit and meat of sorts.( grilled pineapple is my very favorite).A lot of fruit to choose from, also cheese and bread.
The beach is just gorgeous.Great for swimming or floating in a swim ring (my favorite pass time)There is no snorkeling off the beach. But you can rent the small catamaran for 25 CCP ea and they will take you to a snorkel area.
The staff was very friendly. My favorite place to be was the "Coffee Bar".
Nery makes the best "Spanish Coffee".
Now the not so nice : The Resort has no bling or polish, there are things that are broken and need fixing. The main lobby's bathrooms for the girls is missing one of three toilet seats. - So, pick the one with seat, problem solved. The Resort is under new management and good things are happening.
So, if you are on a smaller budget, can overlook some fix ups, this is for you.
We have seen improvements during our stay. They are renovating and fixing every day. We had room # 3402. My rating is 3.75 stars.response / report this review -

This is the worst place I have ever stayed in Varadero and I do not have high expectations. Staff are rude, place is dirty, food is terrible when it is available, service there isn't any. Feces not cleaned off outside of budet, dirty plates piled on top of each other on tables. Just gross. Thank God for the beach and sun!!!

I hated the French attitude and the seniority they felt they have being there. They can go back to France. The hotel is nothing spectacular but the resort area is nice. Staff was good. The beach is beautiful. Water is gorgeous. The sand space was really uglyno trees..just dried up shrubs..wish there was more vegetation. It probably changed since I have been there

good service, helpful staff, food was quite tasty. Accommodation decent, not great luxury, but clean. Beautiful beach.
