Beautiful building. The service is spotty. I think the place is under new management and they're still trying to get it together.

This is a restaurant that is trying hard to regain its reputation of the 1980s, when it was known for fine dining. It's a beautiful place, inside and outside, and you can see the marina from the property, which was originally built in the 1920s for a BC governor. A pity, then, that so little is going well for the restaurant today. We should have been wary when we noticed that the nearby Sea Glass grill was so packed with patrons that we couldn't even get a table. The Latch, by contrast, was empty, and looked closed from outside. But at least we were ushered right to a table by our server, a nice young man who told us the history of the property. His warmth could not make up for the generally mediocre food: the southwestern mussels were in a broth that didn't cohere; the Thai curry shrimp were tasty and spicy but in the way that a college campus curry might be; the rack of lamb was overcooked, gloppy and overdressed. We did like the tequila shrimp appy and the Caesar salad well enough, but these could not make up for pricey mains that fell flat as cuisine. The cook never came out of the kitchen to offer a word of welcome to his sole guests (nor regret when we complained about the lamb), and the server, nice as he was, was not sufficiently trained in gourmet restaurant basics like the importance of offering a wine list and/or cocktails before taking dinner orders, replacing dirty dishware between courses, hanging and returning coats, where to place steak knives. We practically fled this sadly mismanaged establishment. (Being greeted by an undertaker's cap in the coat closet didn't help -- I posted a photo of it with this review, but it seems like it's been rejected). Overall, a highly disappointing experience.

Dining at The Latch was one of the most pleasant dining experiences we have ever had. Kent and Jennifer are two of the most friendly people you could hope to have as your hosts for the evening. The service was excellent and the food was even better! We were not rushed and they both came over to greet us and have a conversation. We met Ben, our server, who was eager to please and help in anyway he could. I would recommend this historical and truly beautiful little jewel hidden away in Sidney to anyone looking for a special place to dine or stay the night or both!
