We have many people coming to Victoria where we quide their vacation and make recommendations where to stay and where to eat. Our list of places to visit and stay is long and always with good reason.
This week our quests wanted to attend the empress for high tea. We strongly recommended the Huntingdon based on what we felt might be more private and a place with more character then the Empress. A switch too something new.
The one star rating is based on a couple factors however Carlos gets a 5 star rating as his service was awesome.
Private it was not as there were several mice scurrying around the floor during high tea. There was one other table being served high tea and likely they never noticed however these mice were close and seemingly undisturbed.
We couldn't believe we were having high tea with mice.
The spread was average at best. A few of the pastries were not that fresh!
Disappointed to say the least. More guests arriving and we simply will be directing them elsewhere.

If you love "quaint", this is your place. It's right across the street from the Victoria Clipper and a couple of blocks from the Parliament buildings, the Empress Hotel and the harbor. Downtown Victoria begins less than .5 mile from the hotel. The hotel and rooms themselves are clean but the view from our room was that of the building next door, not very scenic. There is no air conditioning but the fan provided by the hotel was adequate. My only complaint is the beds which were very hard with little to no give. A pillow-top or egg carton mattress would've worked wonders. I also had an issue with the pillows. Each bed had two pillows: one VERY soft and the other VERY hard. I would stay here again but ONLY if the beds are upgraded and there was a happy medium with the pillows.

Nice bed, small room and simple bathroom. Our room looked over the courtyard towards the bay. Breakfast included, options with meat, served at sit-down table with server. Quick check-in, and check-out. Very close to clipper ferry dock, across the street. Starbucks coffee (one of 35+ in Victoria) is 2 blocks away.

We stayed at the Huntingdon for two nights. The staff were very courteous and the free breakfast was a nice perk. Parking was well priced in a gated garage and the hotel was easily within walking distance of downtown. The loft room we had was very large format a hotel and had a full kitchen available, as well as a pair of bunk beds in addition to the twin we had. Plus a fold out couch. For a family this room would be perfect. We were only a pair so did not take advantage but for families who would be cramped in a normal hotel room this would be great. Any quips I would have would be very minor. TV was a bit small, and there is no in room safe. Other than that it was a fine room.

    Quaint, old building..near everything.
Lacks food options, rooms are nicely designed except for the paper thin walls and wood floors you can hear guest activity from numerous floors.
    Smelly bathroom.
Water system is so loud we thought someone was drilling doing maintenance work.
If a good nights sleep is your goal.. better skip this place.

We are very overwhelmed with the great service. John the front desk gentleman upgraded us to the Garden suit in the mansion just by over hearing my wife and I admiring the history of the mansion. We are very pleased with the room and the service.
