Stayed at Amphitheatre Backpackers. Was really wonderful. It's beautifully done up. With unique decorating. Spotless. Exceptionally well run. The staff are all great. The food is brilliant. The mix of people so interesting. Absolutly All ages. From all over the world. Lots of different areas to relax. Good music.
Did the Gorge hike. 20km. But well worth it! Really need longer than a week end here!

Was very disappointed by the hosts. You can do the trips by yourself and they lie and say you can't. Also they haven't cleaned the communal fridges for long long time. In general they were not friendly. However, the bed was comfortable. Location is OK, not great. Next time will stay elsewhere

The entire property is supposedly registered as a restaurant which conveniently by law you can't drink any alcohol on it. Go buy your overpriced beer at the bar.

Quick tip. If you want to go hiking, it does not have to be a R1000 pp guided hike. Just rock up at the Nature Reserve buy the booklet it's R40-80 pp to maintain the park.

Beautiful place, great vibe. Very young environment. Dinner was pretty expensive, but tasty.
The place would have receive five star, dough we felt that the people in the desk where doing their best to sell us their private trips, and less giving us the real answers about the dragnsberg mountains.
For example, we wanted to to the ladder hike on our own, and the lady in the reception told us it's dangerous and almost impossible without a guide. At the end, we where doing it on our own, very easy.
Baside from that, we had a really good time there.

I had the opportunity to visit the Amphitheatre Backpackers which if your looking for a true South African experience I wouldn't recommend another spot. The decor includes many different aspects that I as a south African could easily relate to. The features the location accommodates includes a petit dining room which serves good food a rustic bar where a drink or two could be enjoyed a pool perfect too cool off in and lots of activities for the kids too keep themselves busy with. All in all a great experience and will definitely return again

Very friendly and professional staff. Came here to rest, got exactly that. Communal kitchen is great, and the facilities inside rooms too. Bigger glasses is a must as I finish my cool drink I just poured in one gulp haha

The water is undrinkable and instead of having a filtered water system to fill up bottles you need to purchase 1.5 litre bottles. This is a large amount of wasted plastic. The facility is spectacular and the location is beautiful but staff made us feel unwelcome. The kitchens are very well stocked so I would highly recommend self catering as waiting time on food can be long.

Our room was spacious and clean but smelled like a septic tank. The staff were really nice and we met some cool people staying there who like to hang out in the communal area in the evenings. We did a day hike to Rainbow Gorge with one guide while on his day off who was amazing, funny, patient and totally made our trip, not to mention the hike was fantastic and waterfall-filled. However, I noticed obvious issues between staff and management. One of the owners was very short with me when I inquired about returning a map but later softened and gave us some hiking suggestions.

First I went alone (2011), took the guided hike and then went and took one of the solo ones. I made friends at the bar and on the hike, two of whom who I met up with in Joburg, one of whom I still talk to. Our guide on that (not easy but totally worth it) hike to the waterfall was great!

Then I took my sister 2016, we met English sisters found a local bar had a meal took a hike the next day and found another restaurant to eat at! Sister loved it, we even went in the Jacuzzi.

Planning to go to go this weekend with the boyfriend and camp.

I find it chilled, good drinking vibe food and the is okay and if like me, you have a car - a good place to get around from.

Very cool place unless you planning on sleeping or eating. The rooms are beautifully simple and affordable. Unfortunately the restaurant has a wonderful menu online that they don't offer in real life and are in no way accommodating when they run out of meals. The bar is awesome until you try get some sleep and the 'club' is getting louder and louder until after 3amgreat for a party, but terrible for the peeps who paid to sleep.

Basic amenities with pub and swimming pool. When we got in at 1:30am, there is still buzz in the pub. Buffet breakfast which is without much choices is a little pricey at Rand150, but what other choice is there when you are at the middle of nowhere. They offer guided hike which we found later the hike is doable without the guide.

On the 3rd of January we had a house fire at Pocolane Nature Reserve. The fire was caused by an electrical faulty and I also lost all my possessions. The weird part is this house was provided by the Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge and prior to this night of the fire, the was an electrical fault on the main DB Box and the faulty was attended to by the Maintenance Manager at that time (who I later discovered that was not qualified for this), no fire extinguishers were present that night because one of the directors had taken them to the bottom hostel thereby leaving us stranded since we didn't even have water that night and Shockily the Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge directors still feel that they shouldn't pay for my possessions lost in this fire as they had promised before. At first we were promised that we would be paid and this never happened. Is there any justice in this world.

    IS THIS FAIR

we had an Amazing stay at Amphitheatre Backpackers on the #MyMzansiRoadTrip. The stay was absolutely amazing as usual , what an incredible property! Spectacular views and amazing nightlife. We did the really EPIC hike to the highest waterfall in Africa from here and we also did the incredible Tiger Falls waterfall hike from here, the day trip to the Royal Natal Park was pretty awesome too and easy to access. Really friendly and accommodating staff! I'll definitely be back soon :)

Great place to stay a few nights. Lovely camping grounds, pool, spa, table tennis, bar Comfortable rooms, beds and clean bathroom and kitchenette. Varied breakfast options, box lunch possibilities and fixed menu for dinner all reasonably priced. They offer some tourist trip options that for us served our purpose for visiting. In sum highly recommend.

If you will join the Amphitheater you will have a very nice place to stay.
The people are friendly and the rooms and kitchen are well prepared.

If you will plan your activities and food by your one, I really can recommend this place!

    Guide tours:
We where convinced to do the tour to the waterfall. We guess that it is a nice trip if the conditions fits an you are well prepared. But on our day it was raining the hole day before and when we started. The tour information told us that drizzling can happen but the rest of the day will stay hot and without rain.
This was totally wrong. If they and we would have checked the weather forecast, we and they would have known.
The guide started the tour in total rain with people which where not prepared.
Half of the way the guide told us, that he is 'only' payed for going to the waterfall and back. That people will freeze and will slip away with ther bad shoes, he does not care and it's not his responsibility, he even told as that.
Under this conditions it was really dangerous and each year people die on this track. A part of the group brake up and went alone back to the parking area.
At the parking area the guy who was checking which people are on the mountain told us that it is crazy to do that on this day and we are the only group which did it this day.
He was asking us, why the guide has not called them to ask for the condition, before going up..
Luckily nobody where harmed this day, apart of that, at next day some where ill.

Note: The lunch box for the trips is very small and for me not tasty at all.

    Dinner:
+ for me the food was very nice
    - but way to expensive
= you should prepare your own food at one of the nice kitchens they proved

What should be approved from Amphitheater:
    - I think it would be great if you have a written overview of the trips you offer.
There you should be a note how difficult it is, under which conditions you will do it, duration, driving time (one way 2h), milestones (highness / ladders 15 meters), what the lunch box includes.
    - don't fore the guide to do this at any time. It should only be done if it makes sense and if the people are really prepared for it. A guide should be responsible for the hole group, if one is to weak everybody has do go down.
    - offer the guide a guiding training.

Apart from all the critical word I would like to say thanks for the nice place to stay.

Great backpacker, enormous camping area, nice clean and cozy private rooms, great pre set meals for dinner and good breakfast available. Trek to waterfall was amazing. Nice pool and outside area, with inside jacuzzi, nice bar and much more. The only downside is that it's far from anything else, otherwise would easily give 5 stars.
