Terrible, corrupt, avoid at all costs!!!

I spent 2 hours collecting my car. I waited at the desk for about 30 minutes, then was shown given my cars location in the yard. I got there and found it had been broken into. glass on the back seat!

I went back & was given another car.. this had been involved in an accident. hardly what I expect from a company that delivers a good service in Europe.

Finally I was given a Toyota Corolla (horrific car by the way, either downgrade or upgrade away from this car!!). I had to downgrade through my journey because the car was slow, inefficient, extremely uncomfortable seats, had a gear box from the 1980s and was the worst car I’d ever driven.

Then I had the ordeal of noting down all the damage on the car. The depo claimed they did not have the plan view of the vehicle so I could mark the scratches and dents and therefore a vague description was required (this is so the can fleece you for costs at the end btw). After much arguing the plan view of the car appeared and I was able to colour in the vast amount of damage across the car.

Then when I returned the car I was told all was fine and there would be no additional costs. I then received 3 charges to my credit card while I was flying home.

I repeatedly emailed Avis to ask what these were for.. no reply to this day

So I stopped the charges using American Express (make sure you book on your credit card so you can do this as they corruptly bill everyone!!!) and I got all the money back, as they could provide zero evidence of any issues, problems or damage with the vehicle.

As I said above avoid at all costs!!! Worst service, audaciously corrupt and how Avis globally haven’t done anything about this I have no idea..

    1. When the vehicle booking was made, we were not informed to have the credit card in hand when picking up the vehicle. Turned out that we had to use another credit card to make a new booking and try to claim the previous booking's money back.
    2. We returned the vehicle fully fueled without a scratch. To our surprise, we got our deposit back the next day and about 70% of the deposit money was deducted. To date I have not received a breakdown of what was deducted.
    3. I have been trying to find out what I paid for for the past week and every time they have an excuse of either the system is down or the person which can help me is currently not available.

    Poor service.

All rental areas are in same vacuity away from arrivals and departures. Avis is a well known brand with good cars and efficient service. Cars are prechecked for delivery but I suggest u take photos or videos of the car and inspect it properly. Call the Avis attendant to document anything you find. Returns is not same place as pick up. Can be confusing.

Avis Rent-A-Car offers great service and they definitely go out of their way for clients. I was offered a choice between any of the Group B cars available (2018 Polo Vivo, 2017 Ford Fiesta and 2017 Ford Figo) and all the various options and additional insurances I could take during my rental term.

It was a long term rental and I was told that the Avis Rent A Car staff could even collect the car when I collect my vehicle from the Panel Beater.

I will recommend Avis Rent-A-Car for all your car rental needs.

Copy paste of complaint made to Avis website 2 months ago and still no response:

It took 2 hours from arrival at Avis before we had everything we needed and could leave. I am very disappointed at the efficiency in which Avis applied to getting all customers going. It was clearly a very busy time of day. I saw at least 2 unused terminals which could have been used to get customers going. There were also 2 desks being manned by 2 staff each. Surely all you need is 1 staff to help 1 customer. It took unnecessarily long to get our keys. The second issue was that we were given the oldest possible infant seat. This thing is not even made by Chelino anymore. It was faded, instructions and warnings were no longer visible and the plastic shell had become flimsy with age, NOT SAFE. This thing was dangerous for children. The staff thought that it was the only one suitable for under 13kg infants. I tried to fit it, asked one of your staff to help, they fitted it incorrectly. I was very unhappy so went to ask for another infant seat. In the store room were only modern infant seats. Why was I given the oldest rubbish Avis has? Your staff need to be trained to read the instructions and suitable of infant seats. It is on all the labels. All of the modern seats are suitable for new borns and older, padding is just removed when not needed. I chose a brand new one and asked 2 different staff to help install the seat. Third complaint, both were clearly incompetent at this. I ended up having to Google and do it myself. The front desk should offer to have a trained staff member come and install the seat when I got the keys. I shouldn't have to ask and then get bad service. Very disappointed with the bad service at one of your major rental hubs. Shouldn't Cape Town Airport be a shining example of how all your branches should operate? The service was so bad it was like Avis was indirectly asking me to use another operator going forward. Which I probably will..

I've been using Avis for several years, and have only ever once had a problem with a booking - the call centre neglected to mention that there would be a weekend surcharge. Fortunately, the manager on-site managed to waive this, as I was not informed about it.

The good: Friendly and helpful basic level staff, they would deserve 5 stars.
The bad: The managers are unprofessional and shouldn't communicate with customers, the company's rules are ridiculous.
If you don't have any other option - literally any other car rental company would do -, than still try to deal with Avis' Downtown office, at least they are just bound by their own bad company's rules.
No AVIS for a few years.
    Problems:
    1. - The car broke down (it was new, but still can happen sometimes)
    - Their phone system is useless if you're roaming so took hours to get to a landline (in 2017!!!!) to call the helpline
    - The replacement car was dirty and a downgrade
    - I didn't want to accept it so I had to go to the airport to change it, where the manager (Lindile?) literally insulted me.
    2. This is on AVIS, not the branch:
When I wanted to extend my one month rental period, I talked to AVIS Downtown and scheduled to visit them on the date, where they informed me that I will not get the previous price but will be treated as a "walk-in" and will get a price 8 times higher than the one I had so far. I left the car there on a Saturday. This is just bad company policy.
I tried in Cape Town so far Hertz and Bidvest, both I can highly recommend over AVIS.
I hope that I could help some people to avoid some bad experience
    Cheers

SCAM. THIEFS. DO NOT USE. Completely disgraceful. Returned car and checked it in, signed off and invoice returned confirming no charges. Then got a call as I was boarding the plane hours later informing me they had supposedly found damage to the car and intended to charge me. A great way to end your holiday. Clearly just a way to extort extra money, not what you'd expect from a big name rental company.

Booked a 8 seater car a month in advance and we waited almost 2 hours for the vehicle. Also, after being a priority customer-this happened. No one did a pre-inspection and Now got a SMS from Avis that they have deducted an additional amount for unknown damages. Inconvenience and dissatisfaction faced due to unprofessional service.

I returned a car to AVIS Cape Town last night and had the car signed off with no issues. This morning I received a call from AVIS saying they were going to charge me 350 rand to clean the car as it was excessively dirty inside and it was not spotted last night as it was too dark to inspect it properly. I challenged this vigorously pointing out that I had the sign off paper work, it was daylight when I returned the car and that I had removed all the rubbish from the car before returning it. At this point the caller backed off and put the phone down. This is just a SCAM to get more money out of you; my advice is to double check your paper work before you leave the airport and if you are unsure take a set of photographs on your phone. Very very poor from AVIS

I recently booked a car and was quoted R4719-00 plus R210-00 if i assisted with the driving. On arrival at your Cape Town Airport office we were told the amount payable is R6189-00. I think this is disgusting and embarrassing We also didnt receive the car we booked. We booked a Toyota and got a Hiyundai accent. Nothing wrong with the car but boot was too small for 4 cases on a long journey. Please get your facts straight before you quote in future. I was totally embarrassed on the part of my Swedish visitors!!!

Worst experience ever hiring a car. Unhelpful staff who don't care. Have spent the first 2 days of my holidays trying to sort out a replacement car as the vehicle I was given had a bald tyre with the canvas showing through. Spent 5 hours today trying to resolve with no luck. Nobody answers the phones. Promised return of call in 10 minutes but takes an hour. Was offered a downgrade ! As of tonight, I have a car I cannot drive. Utterly irresponsible that a car hire company can give a car like this to a customer. Clearly a catalogue of failings that the vehicle failed basic checks. Will never use Avis again. Shameful !
