I do remember when this train station was built in 1979. I was 16 years old then. In July of that year, when I was 15, me and my family members took a train here from Schenectady, down to New York City, to catch another train to Richmond, Virginia (Highland Springs), where my aunt used to live. In July of that year, when I went with my family, it was not even built yet. It was probably built later that year in 1979.
Now that I heard, in 2017, that same train station will be demolished (38 years later) and it is now becoming too small, too cramped, and it is showing its age, and its 1979-era modern state-of-the-art futuristic-style design does not fit in to the historic character of other buildings in downtown Schenectady. When it is built, it will have design elements from Albany's and Schenectady's old Union Station, Utica's, and Rome's, and Amtrak train station, and it will be much bigger then the old 1979-era station, and its waiting room will look almost very similar to the one in Rome's Amtrak station, Utica's, and Schenectady's old Union Station, instead of its modern state-of-the-art version seen in its 1979 design.
Years ago, they should've built the current train station with a similar design of Albany's old Union Station, Schenectady's old Union Station that closed down in 1969, and torn down two years later in 1971, and Utica's or Rome's Amtrak train station, especially, its interior design that fits into downtown Schenectady historic character, instead of the old '70s modern state-of-the-art, futuristic-style design that made downtown Schenectady too unattractive that was built in 1979. At that time, downtown Schenectady should've had much stricter rules​ or regulations to how buildings including the Amtrak Train Station should have been designed before it was built years ago, very similar to the ones that are built in the cities of Albany, Utica, Saratoga Springs or in Rome, NY, instead of the old 1979-era smaller modern state-of-the-art futuristic-style design to make downtown Schenectady too unattractive that did not fit in with its historic character that blended to the rest of its buildings (its planning commission years ago in 1979 should have rejected it, and then instead, make a design of that [Schenectady] Amtrak train station look like the ones built in Albany, Saratoga Springs, Rome, or Utica to make downtown Schenectady attractive), and the Schenectady city officials including its planning commission around that time should have fine or (punish) that architect who created it back in the 1970s for creating a design for that train station and around that time, the design of that new Amtrak train station in Schenectady would have been controversial, especially for older people years ago who remembered coming to downtown Schenectady to visit its old Union Station to catch a train, who did not want to see it torn down, and the an official of the Schenectady planning commission at that time who improved that '70s-era modern design of that Amtrak Train Station, probably made a big mistake by creating a futuristic state-the-the-art design for that Amtrak Station instead of a historic-style design, very similar to Utica's, Saratoga Springs' Albany's or Rome's, and the city's planning commission should've fired him or her for it, and got a fine for ruining downtown Schenectady's historic character.
The old 1979-era Amtrak train station in Schenectady was so out of Character with surrounding renovated historic buildings in downtown Schenectady, at the time in the 1970s should have persuaded the city to adopt its architectural guidelines even before it was built, very similar to the one in Utica, Rome, Saratoga Springs, or Albany (old Union Station). This new train station in Schenectady will have the appearance of a historic-style building with it's historic-style facade both interior and exterior just like those train stations in those cities that I mentioned above when complete.response / report this review -

My train is going quite slow and we are late from the arrival time for around 2 hours. Very disappointed.

The interior of Utica's Amtrak Train Station looks almost identical of Schenectady's old Union Station, and that is how the 1970's Amtrak train station should've looked when built instead of the old 1970s-era modern design.

Trains usually run on time fine, but the main depo lobby is closed and the wait area is now exclusively outdoors. At least they're getting rid of the aesbetsos and mold. Well played.

The station is nice but if it didn't have the sign in front I would thinks it's metro north cuz that's how metro north stations look it's also dirty and smells but now there will be a new one

While waiting for the train at the temporary station, Stan and Stacey, the customer service people were the nicest Amtrak employees I've ever met. Very helpful, friendly and very personable. They kept us entertained while waiting on the train that was late.. Nice!

Saw an Amtrak pull in here once while in Schenectady for a few hours. Got to go on board and see the train for the first time. Fun experience!

This station is in terrible condition : 2 out of 3 lights in the elevator have been dead for months, the sidewalk in front of the station is badly cracked, the entry hall is generally dirty and not welcoming at all. Some chairs in the waiting hall have been broken also for months, they have plush animal on them so people can't sit on them, which is funny the first time you see them but 6 months later just make you wonder why this station maintenance is so bad.
This train station is a disgrace for Schenectady and for Amtrak.response / report this review -
