Where do I begin. I will start off by saying, of course all of this is subjective. This is just my opinion but I hope it helps someone in the future. First thing, the staff was nice.
The location/ease of access to the hotel is not good. At. All. The font entrance is facing a very busy street with very limited parking. And the 2nd entrance is located in the middle of a little outdoor/restaurant area. So you have to park on the street and walk a little ways to the side door to get in. They do have a luggage cart though that comes in handy since you have to walk so far. There is a parking garage for the hotel but it’s not somewhere you want to park if you haven’t already gotten your luggage in. Also, I’m not sure if the hotel waives your parking fee in the garage? I didn’t ask. But I was in the garage for 4 min and I still had to pay $3. Just an inconvenience
The hotel by far was extremely weird. I have no clue what kind of vibe or theme they are trying to reach but it’s a miss for me. They are going through renovations but I they have A LOT of work to do. Nothing in the hotel matches at all. I get that they may be trying to go for something original since they are downtown but it’s just down right weird. The room decor was awkward. They have hard floors in a lot of their rooms which I see that is efficient with cleaning and things but it takes away from the ‘cozy’ feel. The bathrooms do not match the bedrooms. The bedrooms are very dark and gloomy with very antique looking furniture- while the bathrooms are being renovated to look more modern.
In my room, the phone didn’t work, thermostat NEVER kicked on, and my shower knob fell off, didn’t work at all. They let me shower in a different room entirely. And with the thermostat, it was just cool enough that night where I didn’t need it. But any other person probably would have needed it on.
So other than all of that, not sure what else to say. But I wouldn’t stay there again.response / report this review -

I travel 4 days out of the week and I'm always looking for a historic building or something other than the regular Hilton Garden Inn. Now, to be fair, this hotel is under going renovations. I'm a logical guy and can accept that, even though it wasn't mentioned at time of booking. That being said this hotel, or at least my room, should not have been rented. There is zero cable TV. I asked them to take a look at it, and they claimed they fixed it well, it's not working (2nd night in a row btw). Secondly, the renovations are being performed on my floor, currently, at 08:50pm oh, and the hot water takes forever to warm up. I mean, to be honest, I'm really disappointed, will not ever be back, and I can't think of a single good thing to say about it.

This is my second stay here at Hotel Highland. It is in a prime location downtown and the rooms are very spacious! These rooms are definitely the largest regular size room. They are going through a facelift and is going to be Hotel Indigo soon but overall, great stay and super cost efficient.

Great location. That's the best thing it has going for it. Lack of power outlets and faulty shower faucet marked this older hotel. The staff was obviously wanting to be somewhere else. TV had local and bare cable. No HBO, even though it was listed as a channel. The bar was only open Tue-Sat in the evenings.

Stay was pretty good. Hotel renovations were not done so the room wasn't quite complete, but the room was still nice. The staff VERY friendly too. I think this will be a rockin hotel once construction is done

The building is beautiful on the outside. I requested a handicap accessible room, but when I arrived I found that the hotel was under construction , and there was only one floor open to guests. My payment was non-refundable, so I was forced to stay in a 7th floor room without a wheelchair accessible bathroom. That being said, the staff was wonderful, very pleasant, apologetic and they bent over backwards to make things as comfortable as possible. I would stay here again, after the renovation is complete.

Typical size room comparable to most hotels. Coffee, iron, hair dryer, and other typical amenities are avalible in the room. There was no fridge. A full breakfast was available in the morning. Newspapers available and valet service. GREAT location and close proximity to five points. Walking distance to restaurants.

We had a good experience- reservations were easy and the staff was friendly. Our room was clean and nice- retro/ modern decor. Having said that, it also had an "odd" vibe with renovations that where ongoigapparently they becoming an Indigo Hotel. We'd return to check them out again.

They are currently undergoing renovations, so it is expected that some things are not attractive in appearance. But the rooms are spacious, breakfast has nice options and the staff has been cordial. Overall good experience.

Honestly didn't check before making reservations. Went down for breakfast first morning to discover nothing complimentary. There is a order bar that serves breakfast items, but good lord at the prices. $4.50 for cereal. Deal breaker for us. Housekeeping does a great job and very courteous. Befs are very comfortable. Bathroom more spacious than normal

We've been traveling to Birmingham for the excellent care we get at Kirklin Clinic and stayed at many hotels. Hotel Highland was a great find! Boutique style hotel in a great location to walk to several great restaurants. The staff is very helpful and go above and beyond like a bed and breakfast hotel! Already made reservations for our next appointments.
