They do a simple thing really well. I don't expect very much from a hostel, but HI was such a great time. It's clean, and it has a lot of handy amenities including a cooking area on each floor and a laundry area. Avoid having a car, though. Parking near there is more expensive than the rooms are

What I love about this hostel is its spacious common areas, super friendly and attentive staff, and free breakfast! The hostel has great common spaces where guests can gather and meet to play pool or ping pong, cook dinner, eat breakfast, watch movies, etc. etc.! The staff also hosts social events throughout the week where you can meet other travelers or hostel staff who gladly share suggestions of ways to explore the city. We stayed in a private room with a private ensuite bathroom. The room was quite spacious and clean! The location is obviously great as well for someone traveling to the city for the first time - it's right in the heart of downtown, near the city's main attractions. Great hostel experience; I will definitely return.

Near to everything, 2 blocks from millennium park, with a lot of free activities (jazz night, walking tours). Only two blocks from the airport metro line. Bathroom is inside of the bedroom with a separate shower that made it very confortable and private. There is a laundry with coins. Breakfast is all days the same and it could be improved. People in the front desk is very helpful

If you're looking for a nice quaint little hotel, this is not the place. It's probably more comparable to a dorm mixed with a camp. But if you're traveling in a large enough group that you can put 8 people of the same gender into a room, it's pretty nice. For the price, it's a great place. Pretty clean, conveniently located, complimentary breakfast, etc.

Very welcoming & helpful. Check-in time is a bit on the late side (4pm). But location is AMAZING. Beds & rooms were clean. Free access to a full kitchen & other commodities on the 2nd floor. Truly cannot get a better located hotel for the price! Will visit again

Large rooms, living area, kitchen, and bathroom shared between 8 guests plus extra bathroom and shower in the hallway. Large lockers, spacious recreational area with pool tables, large TV, large dining area, and huge kitchen. Great service, comfortable beds. Right in the Loop, so movement throughout the city is incredibly easy via the 'L'. Easily one of the better hostels in the HI network.

Very affordable, clean rooms and bathrooms, friendly and helpful staff, and the location is perfect. It's next to shopping and theatres on State Street, several different train stations and a couple blocks from Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain. The Greyhound bus Station is only about 7-8 blocks away or $7 cab ride. Union Station is also close by, within walking distance. Blues legend Buddy Guy's cafe/blues club is only a couple blocks away. I will definitely be coming back!

I was traveling to Chicago on a budget and stayed at this AWESOME Hostel for 4 nights and a day in late July. I had a wonderful time during my stay. With it located on Congress downtown I was able to safely walk or take the Chicago public transportation system to all of my daily excursions. The rooms are very nice and clean that connect with a kitchen and bathroom/shower. The rec area (pool tables and lounge) was great to sit down in after a long day and relax. The breakfast was good although not more than a few small pastries, cereal, fruit, bagels and toast. Check in front desk and employees were very helpful with questions and needs. Overall a very nice and enjoyable experience at the Hi Chicago Hostel. When I can get back to Chicago this will be my first place to make a reservation.

My stay at HI Chicago was very nice. It is a few minutes away from a main train station and a lot of nice restaurants. The second floor common area is very spacious and the free breakfast served there in the morning does it's job. The front desk staff is very helpful but they did run out of discounted tickets for the Art Institute.

My room was right next to the train tracks though and was a little noisy the first night. I got used to it pretty quickly though. The room was a little warm and stuffy the first two nights but became more comfortable as time went on.

I would definitely stay here again.

I love this place. I've been here twice and I will come again. Never had any issues with things not being cleaned. There was always a cleaning crew working throughout the building. Nice breakfast. Don't expect eggs, bacon and pancakes (unless you buy it and cook it yourself). Kitchens are free for you to use. Tons of events going on in the building. They had beer and popcorn one night for 21+. The ladies bedrooms are nice and the women were nice. I loved that this place was secured, so you needed your key card to access the building. I would say the only downside was that there was a woman in the my shared room kept using the deadbolt, so I couldn't go in. I had to go to the front desk at ask them to open the door. The location of the building is perfect if you really want an expensive place to stay downtown. You're in the loop, so you have no problem getting around by taking the trains and buses.

Hard to decide how to rate this place. Do NOT expect a multi-star hotel. It is a nice hostel at a pretty great location. South loop - very short walk to Michigan avenue and State Street. Easy to get to public transportation to go anywhere in Chicago.

I've stayed here mostly in the dorms. The ones with bathrooms in suite - MUCH better and more convenient.

Staff is nice and accommodating. They answer emails quickly and they're helpful.

Staying there for four or five nights this summer. Price is Right. I've never had a view that was . Worth looking out the window. Maybe because I stay in the cheap rooms.

Lots of good places to go nearby. Take a look at nearby Roosevelt University - beautiful building.

The room was clean and comfortable, and the semi-private room provided good security. The location was in the Loop, so it was centrally located with easy access to the Metra and Red Line trains. Breakfast was provided, but only included bread products (pastries and oatmeal) and the coffee machine was out of order. But there are plenty of cafes nearby where you can get a decent breakfast. I'd definitely stay at the HI Chicago again!

I've stayed at this hostel with my sister and our friend the 2 times we've been to Chicago, and we really love it! It's in a good location and the rooms are very spacious. The hostel itself is very big and the staff is friendly. There are few showers in the bathrooms but that's not a problem because they're not super busy usually, and they're very clean and nice. We'll definitely come back when we visit Chicago again!
