Been doing here for more than a decade. Live the place. Sushi is great but there are other dishes too. I stick to sushi. There's a bar area as well as the traditional seating area. Calamari appetizer is nicely flavored but filling. Can't go wrong with Sushi. Reasonable wine list. Moscow Mule is really good. If you dont want to use valet parking, you can part in the underground parking lot at Hyatt and get parking ticket validated after dinner.

Some of my favorite sushi! But this time they added this sticker to all their menus and it struck me as incredibly petty. A "3% additional charge to keep up with minimum wage?" The message is either that 1) Japengo is barely hanging on or 2) They can't be bothered to support their minimum wage employees. (Am I supposed to feel bad about rising minimum wage requirements?) If it's the former, why not just slightly raise prices without a fuss? I'm not sure what Japengo is trying to accomplish here but it's strange, petty, and disappointing.

I highly recommend this restaurant and when you come make sure to ask for Christina she is one of the best waitress' throughout all of my times going to restaurants. The sushi is phenomenal. And make sure to come for happy hour there are awesome deals. Make sure to order the truffle fries, japengos fried rice, and potstickers. Wonderful service and food.

Amazing Sushi. Been going here for 2 decades. IMHO best fusion Sushi I've had. Jerry is an unreal Chef. If you haven't been here you haven't lived. Try: Albacore on Top, Tootsie Roll, 50-50, Cabo Wabo, Japengo special, and Chefs specials.

They serve sushi in a Japanese setting. I got the steak, which cost a lot and was the size of a large sausage patty. Not worth the money. Got the sushi as well. Maybe I don't like sushi, not sure but, this sushi was nothing special. They do valet parking and that was a joke. Would have been faster for me to park myself. If the parking service does not improve the parking process than what's the point. Had to wait 15 minutes, in the chilly dark night, for them to get my car back to me. Not how I wanted to wrap up my mediocre meal and night.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend, and we loved it. Nice atmosphere, yummy food, and we had the best waitpersonMelissa. Loved her personality, she made great wine and food suggestions; she's perfect for the role. Highly recommend Cafe Japengo.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious fresh food offerings. The sushi melts in your mouth. I can see why this place is rated as one of the best sushi restaurants in San Diego. It is beyond expectations!

I'm giving them a 5 stars because the staff was excellent, the food was delicious, the bathrooms were clean, and parking was free. Our Waitress was very polite, always in reach when we needed her, she also had great suggestions as we were a group there for lunch (some of us 1st timers).
Overall great experience, would suggest to all types of patrons.response / report this review
