Okanda is a sacred kovil worshipped by many devotees of different cultures and religions from all over the country. It is situated on Panama-Kumana road, just before the ticketing office of Kumana National Park. It is a temple devoted to the God of Katharagama. The beach and surrounding area can be viewed if you climb the small cliff inside the premises.

Situated in kumana-panama off road 16km away from panama and closed to the kumana national park entrance. This place has lots of folks combined with legendary stories. Okada Devalaya is to belived to be the place god skanda ( God Katharagama ) first sailed in to srilanka by golden boat. Once gid skanda landed, this golden boat has turned in to a rock. Still we can observe that rock boat in okanda beach and known as " Oru Gala ". As people belive this is a very powerfull Kovil and lots of people used to visit this kovil. Better visit in day time as evening time elephants may cross the road.

God Katharagama (Skanda Kumara) came from India with his servants in two huge canoes and landed at this beach. He went to Katharagama through Yala, met Valli Amma, taken her back to Okanda, got married and spent a fun filled stretch of a time (Honeymoon) before going back. Okanda means playful and happy, so the place became Okanda.

Paada Yatra starts from this Devalaya to honour the trip of God Katharagama through Yala.

The two canoes used by them turned into stone and presently known as Ran Oru Gala.

The road to this Devalaya is terrible. It starts off with a carpet road, then cement and then just bare gravel as it goes deeper into the jungle/bush. But I'd say the trip is worth it because there is a lot of wildlife along the way.
    Crocodiles
    Herd of deer
Elephants (luckily we didn't come across any)
    Peacocks
    Monkeys
So many birds.. All in their natural habitats.

Just beside the Devalaya is a beautiful beach. Very clean. The water is so blue. People visit the rocks to the right end of the beach.

    Okanda Viharaya & Okanda Devalaya / ඔකඳ විහාරය හා දේවාලය

At the top of the rock is a small devalaya dedicated to Valli Amma, the concubine of Murugan ( Skanda). At the bottom of the rock lies a large devalaya dedicated to Murugan (deity Kataragama). A flight of rock cut steps from this devalaya leads to the top of the rock.

The caves at Kottadamuhela, near by, were a gift to the Sangha of the four quarters of the world, past, present and yet to come by the descendants of an independent dynasty of Kshatriya who reigned over southeast Ceylon with its seat in Kataragama. The emblem of the fish, found in the caves in this region, is the insignia of these rulers.

This entire region, as attested to by ancient cave inscriptions (out of which 20 has been identified at Kottadamuhela), has been used for similar purposes to those of this initiative since before the time of Christ.

According to the Historian Ven. Medhadana Thero, he has observed ruins of the stupa at the top of the rock during a visit in 1978 but today only some traces of it is found. Ancient bricks are scattered at the bottom of the rock.
