Muhudu Maha Viharaya lies in town of Pottuvil boarding the sea in the east cost of Sri Lanka. Muhudu Maha Viharaya which had been built over 2000 years ago had owned 264 acres during the British rule. Even though many people consider that Kirinda is the place where Viharamaha Devi landed, according to Historical facts, it is believed to be Muhudu Maha Viharaya in Pottuvil. Actually this temple has around 2000 years of history. If you are driving towards the Arugambay, you can see the small name board towards to your left.

Muhudu Maha Vihara ( මුහුදු මහා විහාරය)is a Buddhist temple situated at Pottuvil in Ampara District, Eastern province of Sri Lanka. This temple which is situated near a wide beach, has been built over 2000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna. Currently the ruins and remains of ancient stupas, Seema Malaka, Avasa Geya and statues can be seen at the site. Important ruins at the temple premises include stone statues of lord Buddha and two statues of old kings or gods.

Nothing much to see. Few ancient ruins. However, historically significant as it is the place that Viharamahadevi is said to arrived at the coast and married the Prince here.

A large number of artifacts are buried in the sand dunes generated by the waves. At an elevated site on the sea coast is seen the ruins of a Dagoba. The remains of a pillared structure are found on west of the Dagoba. A torso of a standing Buddha image made of limestone could be found inside this structure, which appears to be an image house. To the south of this are the remains of another structure.

Most historical temple in Eastern Province. Great place to calm down. Local people destroying the place and the ancient ruins the proofs of great history of Buddhism..
