A very nice camping site! It lies surrounded by small mountains with small caves. The site is placed on the end of a very long and bumpy road, which requires a 4x4 - it cannot be recommended to drive it in a normal car! It is close to magnificent nature-trails, and really encourages one to take som trips into the wilderness! Prices for camping are quite acceptable! The service-building was of very high quality and was kept nice and clean at all times.
Very beautiful campground. One I would love to stay for a day or two. Not one I would use to go on a lot of day trips for. It is about 45min-hour off the main road. But it is a very cool place.
A hidden gem and a long, winding, bumpy road to get there. Do not go here if you do not have a 4x4 - you can try, but I wouldn't.
I thought we'd never find this place. We drove for almost an hour. The road was relentlessly bumpy and sketchy at times. It was steep, with blind hills and curves, and there was only room for a single vehicle at times - most of the time. I thought for a second, "this is a trap, there is NO WAY there is a campground at the end of this road". Forget about turning around if you get cold feet because there really isn't a safe place to do it - so we kept on going. I'm glad we did.
If you're looking for a quick place to stop and rest, this is not that place. If you make it all the way here, you better stay the night, walk around, and soak it up. One of the most memorable campsites/places I went to during my stay in Iceland. I'll leave it at that.
Nicest campground we stayed in because the setting was so beautiful and it was uncrowded because it is a bit difficult to get to compared to campgrounds on main roads, but well worth the effort.
Personally my number 1 favorite place in Iceland: like a green courtyard surrounded at 360 degrees by massive, steep and impressive mountains. One can easily imagine Trolls gatherings in this place! The cave is also a comfortable shelter in case of bad weather or in case of a "barbecue emergency" ;)
Besides, having the chance of experiencing northern lights (aurora borealis --see picture below) just over this magical place is just an awesome experience one can't forget.
Great camping 30 min away from Vik. the road to reach it is unpaved but really amazing. The campsite is surrounded by mountains and has good and clean facilities. It also has a cave where you can eat and use as a shelter for the wind. The only negative point was the cold shower otherwise it would have been a 5 star review.
Like a fairytale. The road you have to take from Vik to Þakgil is one of the most beautiful in Iceland, and you don't need a 4x4 to drive it.
You arrive in a gorgeous little valley secluded from everything. There's a lot of space to camp, the showers and toilets are really clean and there's a nice little cave for shelter or BBQ'ing. One of my favourite campsites in Iceland.
Probably the most beautiful campground we have seen in iceland. Clean restrooms and showers, Hot water not always available. Takes a 4x4 car to get there! Awesome view on the way up or down the Mountains.
Brand new bathrooms and showers were just added probably within the year. This place was truly a once in a lifetime experience!
Pakgil was my favorite campsite in Iceland. Definitely worth the drive from Vik. The newly built faculties were amazing and very clean. The dinning hall in the cave was extremely cool.
The rating is not only for the camping but also for the landscape around it, the road through Katla Geopark and all you can see and experience during its crossing. Camping itself is simple, no fancy stuff. Off winter you can get in a cave/bar type of thing naturally formed on the rock. Please understand that by 4x4 there's only a way for getting in and out of this place. Drive with caution and don't take on this road with an inappropriate vehicle. Recommend it!
We found this place totally by accident taking the first road from Vik in the direction of mountains - it was quite shocking to see there's anything at the end of really long gravel road :)
Amazing place for 1-2 day camping/hiking/trekking in a volcano valley in the middle of nowhere. You just can't believe that you are still on this planet, the views are breathtaking. There is also a big cave nearby with tables where you can cook and eat.
Very impressive place, not many toilets or showers in the campsite but enough if is not very crowded. A cave with tables is a very nice place to Cook and eat. The trails from there are really high recomended with impressive views
I could not ask for a better campground in Iceland. The drive in off Hwy 1 is stunning. There are spaces for tent and campervan camping as well as some small cabins. There is also a cave setup with tables and a fire for relaxing in the evening.
great campsite if you are prepared properly. they don't offer any facilities except toilet and showers (only ice cold water). the road to the property is an adventure it self - you will need some experience to drive it. the scenery around is fantastic and in general I liked it a lot.
