Slow and surly service, but was attracted to price. All was fine, until I was charged for additional fuel three months after my hire. This was after refilling the car at the N1 petrol pump about 200 meters from their office at Keflavik airport before returning the car. I am confident that the fuel gauge on their car was faulty (an old OPAL) but my dispute with the company was ignored. Never again Sixt. I'll gladly pay a little more at a reputable care hire company.
Despite all of the negative reviews, my wife and I had a pleasant experience with Sixt. We were able to get our car about an hour earlier than we were scheduled due to our flight arriving earlier than planned. We had to wait approximately 15 minutes once we arrived at the rental car place in order to get our car. Our car met our expectations and was durable throughout our week long honeymoon. We returned our car at the scheduled timed and were immediately helped. Overall, our experience was superb.
The good and the bad. The good is that the prices with the additional insurance and additional driver packages are very cost effective and they are a little less particular car itself. The bad is I noticed two pits in the windshield which were not on the pre delivery damage report. They did not wish to add it stating I should just keep the photos in case. That is poor service.
I actually had a pleasant car rental with Sixt. Maybe it was because I was expecting the worst after reading the reviews.
We waited 30 minutes to pick up the car, during which I read all the horrible reviews and got a little scared. I thought well, I have great car rental insurance from my credit card so I don't have to purchase any insurance, and I'm not falling for the upcharging for a full tank of fuel upon return (which is actually pretty common of all car rental companies, even in the US), so I should have no worries. However, they did charge a very large security deposit for damages (almost $2000 USD) and said it would take almost a month to be refunded. FYI - there is free WiFi at the office.
When we got the car it wasn't super clean, but definitely acceptable. It also had a lot of exterior damage to the bumpers and the gas was completely empty. After having them refill the gas, we were inspecting the car when a man wearing a suit stopped by and talked to us extensively, saying things like we are not trying to screw you, we do not charge for scratches smaller than a fingernail, the easiest thing is for you to take pictures and video of the car and we can compare on return. The problem is, we were told that we had to list all damages at check in by the counter agent and also by all the documents posted all over Sixt. He then refused to sign the list of damages we had written. At this point I thought we were screwed. It was weird the guy spent a long time with us, trying to reassure us that they were not out to get us, but then would not sign our paper as per company policy.
We went on our trip and tried not to worry about it. We held our breath while returning the car. In the end it took all of 5 minutes and the guy told us the car looked good, no new damages, here is the form. The most anti-climatic car rental return ever. So apart from freaking myself out from the reviews, it was actually just fine and a pretty standard car rental experience with competitive pricing.
I will update the review if I have any problems with getting the damage deposit back, or any other weird additional charges. But otherwise it was great renting with Sixt and I would probably rent from them again if I came back to Iceland.
Update 8/28: got my entire damage deposit back, no issues
Don't even consider using these people. They sold us on unlimited miles for an extra 300 Euros and after returning the car charged us an additional 1800 euros and suddenly had no recollection of the unlimited km purchase. Fraudsters, liars and cheats.
I rented a car from Sixt at Keflavik Airport in June 2017 because I had a good experience renting through them in Iceland in 2016. It is amazing how much things changed in only a year. When we arrived at Sixt this time, it took us at least an hour to pick up our rental car even though there were only 2 people in line ahead of us. The incredibly slow pace was partly due to incompetence and partly technical issues, but the main reason for this poor service was that there were only 2 employees working at the time.
Thankfully, we had no major issues with our car once we actually got it from Sixt.
Add photo.
However, when we tried to return our car it was a mad house. It took us about 45 minutes to return our car, but I felt really bad for all the people in line to pick up their cars. There were probably 30+ groups of people waiting to get their cars, and during that 45 minutes I was waiting, the pick up line probably only moved up one or two groups! At the rate the Sixt employees check cars out to people, I'm certain that these poor souls spent most of their Iceland holiday in the Sixt office and not actually exploring Iceland.
Oh, and how could I forget the fire alarm that inexplicably went off for 5 minutes while we were trying to drop off our car! My poor mother still has a migraine from this. Thanks for all the headaches, Sixt!
One of the women worked at the desk tried to sell us the option of letting them fill the gas tank, so we will not have to fill it up when we return the car. We thought it is a good idea; since this can save us some time when returning the car and thinking about buying the option. Then we were told the cost will be more than 66 euros. It turned out the cost of the option is a full tank of gas instead of just what it takes for top it off. After we questioned more, then she told us, we can use the car till the tank is close to empty. But who will do that when the gas stations are far in between. In Iceland, you want to keep the gas tank as full as possible.
We are lucky that we caught the scam early. But any future travelers, pls take note.
Avoid avoid avoid. Unless you are super patient in picking up your car. Expect up to 2 hours waiting timeSlowest car pickup I experienced in 30 years of travelling June 2017. I wonder how this works in July August. Correction 30 mins. Later. Expect more than 2 hours :-(
I read somewhere to be more leery of this company. We rented a standard car for our five day trip around Iceland, and I made sure to get the extra "gravel protection." IMPORTANT: Make sure you carefully inspect the car at pick up, and that includes using the mirror they offer to go under the car and check for scratches. When I returned it, they tried to pin some scratches on the underside of the bumper on me and it was only after I disputed it with the aid of the rental contract stating previous damages and pictures I took did they suddenly realize, "Our mistake, that's marked as existing damage." Right after we got the car, it was pulling very hard to the left (seemed to be an alignment issue), so I tried to call their customer service line two different times about getting a new car. Both times I waited for over 30 minutes on hold and no one answered. Pretty poor experience overall.
We decided to rent from Sixt for an early spring road trip around Iceland - and we are glad we did. We feel like they treated us very fairly, their prices were competitive, and we had a good experience renting from them. The check-in process was a bit slow (to be fair it was really early in the morning and there was not much staff) but overall, they exceeded my expectations. HINT: It takes longer to wait for the shuttle bus than just walk to the terminal (it's like a 3 min walk).
Ottimo ufficio noleggio
