We had no issues with the rental process, the car was excellent, the staff were helpful. I think the staff try to get the shuttle to the airport every 15 minutes, but be patient if they’re busy, they may be running behind. We waited a full 15, but once they collected us, the whole process was easy. Be sure to get full coverage insurance, the weather can be intense. We would rent here again 100%.

I rented a Renault Kangoo Camper Van for my two week journey going around the ring road. It was an ok experience. I spent a lot of time deciding on my chosen rental company, and I think if given the chance again, I would go with a different company. Here were the pros cons that might help people when deciding. I wavered between 2 or 3 stars but after making this list it’s definitely 2!

Pro:
-Car was very drivable! I felt really safe and appreciated how easy it was to drive solo
-I didn’t spend as much on gas as I expected to. It surprised me how far I could go before getting gas. I stopped every 2-3 days never letting it get below 1/2 a tank. I also liked that they give you a gas discount card for N1 and Olis.
-The size of the van was perfect for one person. I wouldn’t recommend for two people. I don’t see how two people could sleep comfortably in this van.
-Lava is very close to the airport. I appreciated how easy it was to pick up. I stayed at the Marriott night before and just walked over to pick up. Worked well!

Con:
-My heater was not working properly. It gave off a ton of white smoke every time I used it for the first 5 or so minutes and freaked out people in campsites. People would come over to me actually worried and knock on my glass. I looked this up and it said it needed to be cleaned. With 3 days left in my trip, the heater stopped working all together. I had to get a hotel for the last few nights. I did call about the smoke issue and they told me it was normal for the first few min. I also told them about this when I turned the car in and that the heater stopped working and the guy just kind of dismissed it and said “oh.” I believe I should have received a partial refund because it really soured my experience and cost me money then booking hotels. This really was the biggest disappointment of it all.
-The bed (more like sleeping pad) is SERIOUSLY UNCOMFORTABLE. It has two pads you put together and no matter what I did they always split apart and I sank to sleeping right on the board. Plus, could they not offer better pillows and larger/newer sleeping bags? I really didn’t sleep well between this and the heater. I would definitely rent from a company with more comfortable sleeping arrangements. My body was in serious pain after the first week.
-They included many helpful kitchen things but no can opener or mugs (yet there were wine glasses?). That seems like an oversight.
-It comes with 2 cooking gas cans but as soon and I went to cook night one I discovered the can in the stove was empty. So I basically only had one can. Not every gas station had the cans I needed so I had to conserve when cooking. Ultimately I ran out and couldn’t even properly boil water after about a week.
-The van had been in an accident before and had a dented door. It would always get stuck so I never slid it fully open. This was annoying.
-Note there is only one USB charger. It had a really loose connection. My phone would charge maybe 20% in 3 hours. This was a serious issue when I relied on the van for power. I recommend bringing a large battery charger with you. My one battery pack was not enough.
-The wifi worked well but battery didn’t last long. I was constantly conserving it balancing between charging that and my phone.
-I couldn’t get the Bluetooth to work.
-I stopped every couple days to get ice. The fridge was ok but was really loud. I only kept it plugged in while driving because you can’t sleep with that noise. Plus its fan was all filled with dust. I don’t think they clean things very well.
-The service due light came on in the last few days, which was concerning. I called about this and they said not to worry about it.
-The curtain blocking the window had a cord with the plastic falling apart.

To summarize the points above, I think they really failed when it came to proper maintenance. You expect to get a van in great working order with all equipment checked when paying about $3k USD including the top expensive insurance package. I don’t think that happened for me.

Transportation to and from the airport was no problem, just call and wait for the shuttle. We had maximum car insurance. The return of the car went smoothly. The car was new, everything worked as it should, we had no inconveniences.
I would use their services again.

We could not be happier with our experience. We chose a four wheel drive model just in case we wanted to try the mountain roads. It was a very new, spacious, and clean Dacia Duster. We averaged 4.7L/100km and 1,000km per tank which was really nice considering the price of fuel. It was smooth, quiet, and very enjoyable to drive, the built in navigation was nice and it has Apple Car Play. We highly recommend getting the premium insurance package. Some roads are gravel and a door ding can happen very quickly. From the time we were picked up at the airport, to when we dropped off the car, we felt reassured with our choice. Our next trip we are going to plan it based around renting the car and getting the full experience driving the country. Pro tip, if you are driving past a gas station and you have half a tank or less, it’s a good idea to fill up. Depending where you go it could be a while before seeing a fuel stop.

Amazing experience renting with Lava car rental. Location of their office is only 5minutes away from the airport which is convenient! Car was sparkling clean and drives great. The 'check-in' process was swift and simple. Rental rates were one of the most affordable compared to other providers out there. Would rent from Lava again next time when I'm travelling to Iceland again!

Just go back on 5/30 from a 3 day layover in Reykjavik on our way back from Stockholm on Icelandair. Our flight arrived at midnight and someone met us within 5 minutes after clearing customs. They shuttled us to their offices and set us up with our car in about 10 minutes. Due to availability we were upgraded to a Toyota Land Cruiser at no extra cost (which we certainly appreciated later in the week when we ran into 50 MPH winds, rain and fog on the south coast highway).

The car had 60,000 miles on it but was in excellent condition. There were a few small scratches and dings but all were noted on the rental agreement. Since it was cold, dark and raining we were given the opportunity to go over the car the next morning and send pictures of any other damage. We checked out the car and all scratches were noted on the agreement.

Upon returning the car we were greeted immediately and on our way to the airport in less than 5 minutes. The staff were courteous and cheerful at all times. I will certainly use them again on my next visit to Iceland

Very happy with our experience. Good price, quick airport pickup, short drive to rental site, friendly staff and clean 4x4 Dacia Duster in good condition. Explained coverage options without being pushy, and went over the car with me quickly but thoroughly. Smooth return process. Glad we went with Lava, after reading other peoples' experience with the competitors. Will rent again!

Price was great and the staff was friendly and efficient. They were waiting for us at the airport and promptly returned us even though we were early on the return. One problem with the Dacia Duster was difficulty finding a replacement wiper blade when it split during the rental. After a gas station and two autoparts stores we were directed to a repair shop which had the part. This would generally not be a problem, otherwise, the car performed very well. Very happy with Lava. Would certainly rent form them again

Staff was nice and helpful. Made sure that all damages (dents + scratches) on the car were captured properly through an inspection before we took off. Car was clean and in great condition. We had no issues during our trip with the vehicle. Staff was responsive when we needed to contact them. There was one small mix up with the airport pickup, however, someone was sent right away the moment we contacted Lava. Good experience and great price would rent from them again!

Started rough as we landed at 4am and when contacted they told us they wouldn't have our car for at least an hour. We had them pick us up and they ended up having a car returned early, so they cleaned it up quickly and we were off. No issues with return and no concerns about the rental office being off-site. I got the feel this is a small operation, so no issues with packed shuttle bus or long lines at the counter

Amazing! Car was very clean, the whole process was very easy and friendly, when we returned the car after 1 week we discovered a small scratch outside of the car that we didn’t notice before- the guy at lava checked the records and found out it was already there from before- although they could have charged us for it. Thanks! Would definitely recommend Lava to anyone traveling to Iceland.

Friendly staff. They picked us up from the airport, then set us up with our camper van. Only a quick run down of the van though, before heading out. So we had to figure out where some things out for ourselves. Make sure you ask about the discount card for gas. They didn't just offer it to us. DEFINITELY GET THE SAND/GRAVEL INSURANCE. it covers you for any damage that isn't a dent.

Good car rental experience. They price matched a competitors' quote and even supplied a newer car (Hyundai Tuscon 4X4). However that car had a known problem with the seat-belt sensor (a constant pinging sound for two minutes each time the car was started, even though the seat belts were secured) which was very irritating. I fixed this issue after a small amount of Googling! Apart from that the service from Lava was good, including an airport pickup & drop off.

I rented with Lava Auto back in late October 2017, and it was the best rental experience I ever could have asked for. The staff were very polite, making sure to highlight any imperfections on the car before rental and providing fuel discount cards, directions, advice etc. The jeep was modern and clean, taking us everywhere with ease and it made our trip to Iceland all the more memorable. There were no nasty charges, everything was transparent. Very professional from start to finish. Thank you Lava Auto, you will see us again.

Great place to rent a car from.
Book online pay a small deposit, select what you'd like and done.
Someone will be waiting on the airport with your name to transport you where the car is, around 10 mins.
Make sure you get a coffee while you are there completing the paperwork. They have an awesome coffee machine.
The staff is great and helpful.
Will recommend 100%

We had a positive experience with Lava Auto Car rental. We hired a small van for a 5 day trip around Iceland. We did take out the total insurance just for our own piece of mind but had no problems on return to pick up of the vehicle. Our cooler didn't work but we didn't actually need it and they were quickly onto fixing it on return. We found the van VERY fuel efficient which was great and the heating was perfect. Pick up and drop off from the airport with friendly and fast customer service. Thanks

Spent 2 weeks touring the country with my wife, stayed in a Lava Auto van the entire time. Had an awesome experience, everything with the van worked out perfectly. Unlike some of the other small sized vans we saw while we were there, the design on the one we had allows the bed to fold up into a bench so you can sit, cook and eat in the van. That, plus the heater, made things really comfortable despite cold temps. They picked us off and dropped us off without issue and were super responsive when we emailed to extend our rental by a day. Highly recommend these guys!

I spent some time trying to find a hire car company for our October 2017 trip to Iceland that I was comfortable with. I read a lot of horror stories about other companies. I found Lava through Northbound. I had no issues. They picked us up from the airport. It was dark when I picked the car up and I couldn't make a fair appraisal. They advised I could email through photos of any damage in the morning if it had not been picked up.
The car was perfect for our trip and we had no issues. I did email some questions regarding pickup and drop off whilst there and it was answered quickly and friendly. I would choose this company again.

We were delighted with our car and particularly Lava's service: they picked us up at the airport when we arrived and drove us back at the end of our trip. Not only that: there was no last-minute sales pitch or insistence that, "Oh, you know you really should pay for " In other words, they kept to our rental agreement without any shenanigans. We were in and out of Lava in no more than 10 minutes. Communication with them was also very easy. When our incoming plane was delayed by several hours, I let Lava know and they simply changed the time of our airport pickup from around 3 pm to 11 pm.

Wonderful experience with Lava Auto Rental in Iceland! I booked months before an August trip and I was sent an email prior to my departure to confirm booking details. Staff greeted me upon arrival at Keflavik airport (even at 4am!) and drove us to a toasty office a couple of minutes away where we were offered hot coffee ☕️. Our 4x4 was newly equipped and comfortable. No issues at all. An easy and stress free car rental experience!! We did opt for the extra insurance but never felt pressured to do so. We were also provided with a ride to the airport after returning the car. I chose Lava because of the high reviews and I'm adding my own. I would not look any further if you need to rent a car in Iceland. We will book with them on our next trip!

I looked around for ages for a company from which to hire a camper for our ring road road trip and found Lava auto through Northbound. They did not have lots of reviews like the bigger Iceland companies (as they are a relatively new company we later found out) but the reviews they did have were excellent (and we can see why). The price was very good when compared to other camper companies so we booked with them. From the outset, communication was great and they responded quickly to my queries. We were met as arranged at the airport and transfer to their office was less than 10 minutes. Customer service was fantastic and the camper itself was almost new and in excellent condition. Everything we needed was included (even a table and chairs, and bedding and pillows, which other companies charge extra for!). I would highly recommend the full insurance bundle for reassurance (alot of the roads off the ring road are unsealed in Iceland) and bring an eye mask as there are no curtains on the front window (esp in summer). I cannot recommend this company enough. As a small company, service felt really personal and the camper was well maintained which was great. Thank you Lava Auto.

Outstanding car rental experience! We rented a Dacia Duster 4x4 for 10 days. This company is definitely young, they were in the process of renovating their office when we visited. Their customer service was phenomenal. We arrived at the airport much sooner than expected, and someone from Lava immediately came and got us early, we only waited for about 10 minutes! Our car was extremely clean, it felt new, and a Lava employee walked around our car and noted each blemish or scratch before we left. He was extremely thorough, which I really appreciated. One word of advice, get the in-car WIFI. It was a last minute decision for us, and it was GREAT and really came in handy when we had to search for places! When we go back to Iceland, we are 100% renting with Lava.

We rented a small automatic compact car through Northbound.is and got matched with Lava Auto and a Hyundai i10. The car was almost brand new, I think we were the second renters, so it was in great shapes and clean. We drove it all around South Iceland for 5 days, and never had any issues. It wasn't the best at going up steep hills but got great gas mileage! The process of checking in and out was very quick and easy, plus the staff was very friendly and helpful! After researching several different rental options, we found Lava had the best prices and I'm so glad we went with them. We would definitely rent from Lava again when we return!

Rented a car from them through northbound.is and it was one of the best decisions we made. We got a Toyota Aygo, car was clean and performed admirably. It only had half a tank of gas in it so they let us know we didn't have to return it full because of that. Pickup from and dropoff at the airport were both easy and quick. Staff was very friendly and even gave us some advice about our trip. Definitely will rent from then again the next time we are in Iceland!

Just rented a Dacia Duster from them last week. No issues at all. We got picked up from the airport very quickly, and the paperwork was painless. When we returned the car it was also very quick and painless. If only all rental companies were like this. I'm gonna recommend these guys to anyone I know.

Exceptional service. David picked us up at the airport at 5am and quickly took us to their nearby office (3min drive) to complete the paperwork and had us on our way in no time at all. Very pleasant to work with and helpful with suggestions. Our vehicle was in excellent shape and the wifi worked great (highly recommend adding that). The same was true with the rental return. Effortless and easy.

I booked through Northbound for my four-day trip in Iceland and I'm really glad I ended up with Lava, because they have exceptional service and amazing hospitality! Hands down best car rental experience I've ever had, all the employees are very personable and the owner was extremely helpful in orienting me with the country, especially since I was travelling solo. The car was well-maintained and I even got upgraded to an SUV, which was a lot better for driving through the tough weather conditions. I will definitely be renting from you guys again! We rented a brand new 4x4 SUV and at a way better rate than any competitor. We worked with Frederick (coordinated arrangements via email far in advance) who picked us up at the airport at 4am and then dropped us off at 5am a few days later. Fast, easy and personal check-in and out. The best car rental experience I've ever had BY FAR, and I've had a lot all over the US.
