The guy pushed for windshield chip insurance and we hesitantly purchased it, but proceeded to get a new chip on the window during our 1 day rental. A lot of bad reviews, but we didn’t have any problems. I recorded a video of the car before we rented it and after to prove it was returned in good condition in case anyone asked but we didn’t need it. Much more affordable than KEF airport.

The most friendly Hert staff I've ever met. They had a lot of customers due to the holydays and reopening after covid, but stayed calm and friendly.

Was told / provided final cost invoice only to have Hertz charge on my CC be totally different (after I returned stateside conveniently). They stopped responding to my email petitions. Very unhappy that the representative in person (extremely nice/helpful/informative) said one thing and then the company delivered something totally different after I departed. Seek other rental agencies

I was able to get the car, but not a very friendly group. No w/c access should you be bold enough to inquire.

No explanation whatsoever about 4x4 driving with the rented vehicle. No explanation about the Icelandic difference between gravel road driving and off road driving. No towing gear present in the car.

Very friendly. Inspect your car before you leave with it to avoid charges.

Don't accept credit card. Wasn't clearly stated online such that I didn't get a car and had to pay 95€. Waste of money and time. Support wasn't helpful.

Quick and friendly service and very nice of them to give me a ride back to my hotel after taking the car back to them when a big storm was rolling in, for no extra cost.

Having looked into various car rental companies ahead of our trip to Reykjavik, we decided to spend the extra money and go with Hertz as they had a reputation for quality and reliability.

Unfortunately, this assumption was put to the test, and Hertz failed badly. A couple of days into our trip we noticed a tiny chip had appeared on the windscreen. Although we did not know what caused this, we pointed it out to the Hertz representative when returning the car. We were told that we would have to cover the entire cost of the windshield, but that the majority of this (estimated to be 85-90%) would be refunded to us as it was almost certain that the chip would be fixed. The rep said they would be in touch in coming days to confirm this. Given Hertz's reputation, we accepted this so that we could check into our flight on time.

After not hearing from the company for a week, we got in touch to find out the final charge for the car. At that point we were told that we would not get any refund and that the whole windscreen had been replaced at a cost of the equivalent of £400 to us. Our Hertz insurance did not cover this, since we did not tick the box to pay the special windscreen insurance, neither did our separate travel insurance. Hertz claimed not to have insurance of their own for which we could pay an excess to cover the damage.

We ended up feeling completely let down by Hertz. We were surprised that windscreens were not covered in the insurance, although I admit we should have read up on this more carefully (I will always check and pay for this in future). But we were completely bemused that we were told that the chip wasn't a big deal when returning the car, only to later be told that it required the windscreen to be completely replaced at such an extravagant cost (note that we hired a mini vehicle, not a luxury car). I have attached pictures to this post to show the "damage" that demanded the entire windshield to be replaced.

When we next return to Reykjavik we will use Budget, which was cheaper and had similar queues at the airport when we arrived. We will not rent from Hertz again.

Service is a little slow but at least they are not pushy on the optional products.
