This hotel has both good and bad sides.
Objectively, in general, it can be rated at 3 stars.
But if you don't drink and smoke, then this place is definitely not for you.
The good:
Nice and cozy grounds and very close to the beach from anywhere in the hotel. The room key is built into the bracelet on the wrist and there is no need to think about the key, it is always on the wrist. 21 Hr. internet wi-fi connection including in price.(3 hr. per day). Friendly and helpful staff. On the territory of the hotel there are shops and bars where you can always have a snack, drink coffee, take ice cream and more. The beach and sun loungers are in good condition, clean and tidy. The room is large on two levels with a living aria and a balcony and is well cleaned every day. Linen and towels are good, air conditioning is good too, not noisy, centralized for the whole floor. What we are didn’t like:
The hotel infrastructure was partially out of order (fountains and decorative pools are empty), Spa does not work, the jacuzzi also does not work, there are no bathrobes and slippers. The furniture in the room is old, the chairs and beds are sagging, the bathroom water tap partially broken. WI FI - isn't work in the room. The mosquito net is torn. There are a lot of small ants in the room. Ceiling fen is shaking and not safe, there are no outlets for Canadian electrical appliances, only 220 volts. At night, some kind of midges bite, so that the legs and arms are all bitten.
The buffet is very meager, there is a queue for food both in the morning, launch and in the evening. The food is monotonous, the menu does not change. There is no ketchup, no oatmeal for breakfast, no milk either, no basic oatmeal serial, no honey, fresh juices only in the morning, they are not available for lunch and dinner, only fizzy drinks or water. Alcohol is very cheap, and if you are used to eating normally and tasty every day, then there is very little food, and there is not enough for everyone. The manager in the buffet works disgustingly.
The queues line are created purposefully, so that people would not stand for a piece of fresh fried fish or meat, but would take (fast food), good economy of products :)
For myself, my wife and I decided that this hotel was not for us, and we will not return here again.
I hope this review will help you with choosing a place to stay for vacation.

Stayed at this hotel last week. Booked two weeks and 3days later decided to switch to another hotel!
The most disappointing stay ever at Royalton Hotel. This one doesn’t deserve reputation of a 5 star hotel by any means. It’s run down, quality of food especially at the buffet restaurant and beach restaurant was absolutely horrible unless you like eating canned food since there was hardly anything fresh. Not even bananas. I was extremely concerned about the safety when it comes to how poorly maintained the restaurants were especially buffet! Only a la cart restaurants were decent. We vacationed in Cuba many times. This time was the worst ever when it comes to quality. Staff was pleasant and accommodating but Sunwing as the owner should take a serious look at this hotel before advertising it and selling it as a 5star. It’s far from it! Very far!! I gave it a 3 star only because the cleaning staff was taking great care of our room and the a la cart restaurant staff was very pleasant.
When it comes to other areas of the hotel I was seriously concerned how safe it is. Pool was obviously never cleaned since it had green algae deposits all around. The poolside washrooms were dirty and disgusting. The beach chairs were dirty as well and some even broken. Honestly I don’t think I will recommend this place to anyone at this point, especially at this times when we are already struggling dealing with Covid the last thing I need to add to my stress is how clean and safe is the hotel that I trusted to stay at.

We have just returned from this lovely resort. The staff are so friendly and make you feel so welcome. Just to name a few Elena and Alex who were our butlers, Barbara who works on the breakfast buffet and the maid who cleaned our room 1414 for 2 weeks. We upgraded to Diamond club and can highly recommend it. There is a separate section in the buffet restaurant, a separate area on an amazing beach where the service was once again excellent. This resort is named as the best in the area and I can confirm that it is. Thank you to everyone.

A fantastic hotel to stay after a week of running around in Havana ! Staff and waiters are very friendly and entertaining. Buffet is huge and very good EVERY day. Seafood restaurant is exquisite! Rooms are spacious and clean. Pools are awesome. Beach is beautiful. The whole resort is quiet and peaceful. Lots of little bungalows and small living units spread out around the lot (instead of 1 huge concrete building). Would love to go again someday.

Just home after 6 very relaxing nights here. Lovely resort and so glad we chose it over the large concrete hotel blocks nearby. Nothing higher than 3 floors of colourful wooden plantation type buildings, beautiful pool and stunning beach, friendly and helpful staff. Comfy beds, excellent food too.
Yes rooms are getting a bit dated but have clearly been well furnished and are clean. We didn't like our first room on the edge of the resort overlooking scrubland and our butler instantly took on the problem and we were moved.
We were worried about the food after some reviews but were pleasantly surprised. The freshly cooked selections in the buffet of eggs meats fish were excellent and sometimes side dishes only warm but if you asked the staff they got fresh out.
We avoided the pool area, a bit annoying with the booking of sunbed and cabanas with towels but the beach was so much nicer and cooler breeze too. There was some "booking" of beds here too but not as much and beach staff always helpful finding beds and brollies.
I loved being on the beach at 8 reading, husband in the gym then both having a walk along the beach at 8.30 before breakfast then yoga which we'd never done before and back on the beach being offered juice water and a cocktail at 9.30!
Entertainment staff worked hard but not in your face forcing anyone to join in. The aqua aerobics in the sea and salsa lessons on the beach were popular and fun.
Some days resort busier than others. Is it 5 star? Possibly not by world standards and maybe not up to the standards of those who have been to other 5 star resorts but excellent choice for a holiday, we felt well looked after and any queries addressed there and then by the block butlers. We met many people who loved it and were coming back.
Totally relaxing time, very quiet rooms that whilst clean and comfy are probably on a schedule for upgrading now the external storm damage is complete. We were sad to leave x

Nice resort on the beach all inclusive is typical. The staff is attentive. The food is also typical for this type of resort. All in all it was fine. We paid for the Diamond club which I think is worth it.

The pictures speak for themselves. Absolute beauty and elegance. Spotless and well kept. Superb staff and accommodations, if a bit outdated. The food is excellent by Cuban standards, but not what most expect. Five star vacation with 4 star dining.

If you expect a luxury resort you are wrong. It's surely better than others on the Island but gets max 3 stars. Food is nothing special, water bottles in tje restaurant are refills from the tap.
However the beach is good. Book the Diamond Club to have a bit more privacy.

Very friendly, well organised with dedicated 'butlers' to assist with planning activities & restaurant bookings etc. Very clean hotel in lovely setting. Food needs a bit of jazzing up but plently of choice - if you like spice bring your hot pepper sauce! Fruit was disappointing probably being out of season.

Excellent resort, but food in all inclusive buffet was often lukewarm. Good selection of international dishes and good quality. Drinks in the jazz bar better than any other on site. Coffee in lobby bar much better than in the buffet restaurant. Entertainment out of this world and West end standard. Pool areas and gardens beautiful, beach stunning. Sea warm and clean. Watch out for the mosquitos tho.
Service lets the resort down in my opinion but it is early days for them in recent tourism experience.
Need to learn some basic Spanish before you go.

Absolutely terrible! Do not stay here !
This is an honest review and unlike people who have stayed the duration of their holiday and then complained, although we had paid for the best room and diamond club service we left after one night as it was so bad!

Don't stay here if you value clean rooms and warm not even hot food

So the first night we arrived late in the day and went to the buffet restaurant, they have a chef that cooks meat for you, My husband chose steak I chose chicken this part of the meal was the only good bit , the rice, veg,chips are all cold

The bedroom smells of damp I would suggest the last time the rooms were refurbed were approx 50 years ago, the bath and shower antiquated and cracks showing, even the mirror is showing bad signs of aging. I think the floor was actually cleaned some time last year..if it was cleaned at all, I risked the shower and my partner wiped the wooden shelf with the bath mat that I had stepped onto, let's just say you don't want to know

So breakfast the next morning in the main buffet restaurant 'diamond" Have their own area..well let's just say service is pretty poor and it wasn't even busy this was 7am to 7.30am so the restaurant wasn't busy, no one on the egg stations and the food was cold and I don't just mean cold I mean the meatballs were like they had just come out of a fridge. The orange juice us just sugar in water

So I wasn't happy at all not considering what we had paid and so called five star, and paying the additional to upgrade to diamond

So we went to see the butler, not used to anyone complaining and no idea how to deal with it

We went to the Italian for lunch at 1pm when it opened again especially for 'diamond club' if you would like to wait 1 hour for a terrible steak with cold mash potato and cold asparagus this is the place to go !!

We saw the Tui rep apparently there is no where they can move us to so we are on our own! Sorry she did organise us a $140 cab to Havana that we had to pay for? And we are now paying 'ourselves' to stay at a true 5* in Havana called Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski

But please read my review and if you like a clean room and hot food DO NOT stay at the Royalton Hicacos as it really is terrible. The resort is very tired and in need of a full refurb

Amazing resort! Had my honeymoon here and it was just fantastic! The normal price was $1700 per person per week all inclusive flight included, but because it was off season I got a deal and paid $1450 per person per week flight included. For $1450 it is very well worth it, but for $1700, I'm not so sure, maybe a bit overpriced. The WiFi (even though we had to pay for it) was good. I showed my parents parts of the resort on Skype video chat. Cubans are absolutely warm wonderful people and we got overall very good service there. The beach was amazing as well, and there is always someone taking your drink order on the beach or by the pool. The food was magnificent and you have lots of options at this resort. You will never get bored. Lots to do and to see, and Varadero city is only a short bus ride away. Definitely try it out!

The only way to describe this hotel is just TERRIBLE! . Read reviews, 4.5 stars good reviews. I don't know where those people lived before but this was the worst hotel I've been to. It's old, cushions in living quarters are probably 30 years old, the room has a musty smell (probably from old curtains, again 30 years old!) when I would open shower, yellow guck would gush out for a minute or so every single day!! We needed to run it for a while before getting in. Disgusting. Air conditioning ? Not functioning.Called service and they said that's as good as it gets! Barely air coming in and ceiling fan would distribute the hot air around! Let me add we went to Cuba on the worst time of the year. it was like 38c with humidity. Unacceptable! I'm asthmatic and was afraid I'd get an attack. After showering, nothing could cool us offcouldn't get clothes on because We were too stickyno airno point in drying hair either! Had to put it up everyday! Blow dryer looked like a vacuum! Gees, I wish I was making this up! I paid a little more because I wanted a good place as it was my husbands first time. And we can say that it was our last. Sorry Cuba! Food was okaylike Cuba is known for. As for cleanliness, not very cleanonce my husband got napkin with lipstick on it..and I got a napkin that has seen better days! Sooo used that it had little fuzz balls all over.could not get me to wipe my mouth! Staff are always friendly and great! Love the Cubans!!! As for the beach, I'll give that 10 stars!! Love the beach, fantastic That's probably all I'll miss and the wonderful people of Cuba! Please do your homework if you don't trust my comments.I never minded old furniture but everything needs to work properly! Air conditioning is extremely important and cleanliness.
Royalton, if you need some tips, please don't hesitate to contact me. Not fair to take money from us and not delivering what your selling. Very sad and disappointed

Personally had a great holiday here. We were lucky enough to experience Cuba day here as we stayed over Xmas & New Year; cocktails, dancing, pulled pork fresh off the spitroast & alligator on the BBQ made it a holiday to remember.
Rooms nice & clean. barely any mosquitoes or insects seen in our room during our stay. The buffet is huge and the food was delicious. However, the restaurant booking system is a bit poor and the selection of food at the restaurants is limited but still good tasting nonetheless.
Outdoor pool was lovely, yet freezing & the beach was clean & so easy on our doorstep.
Fun activities such as target shooting and music quiz can add some variety.

Nice hotel let down by it's outdated and ineffective restaurant booking service.

Expect to have to eat in the buffet for your first few days as without a reservation you can not eat in the other restaurants even if they are empty, oh and you will struggle to get a booking without 4 days notice.

The staff however are superb in the main, and the Cuban party is a highlight

The beach is stunning and on par with other top beaches in the Caribbean. The staff keep the beach well maintained and there is an excellent drinks service and bar on the beach. Hotel grounds are also very good with some great places to sit and relax. The staff are also helpful and friendly.

The hotel is massively let down by the awful, almost inedible, food. We set our expectations low for the food in Cuba but it was far worse than anticipated. I would have eaten elsewhere if I brought more money with me. We only had minor stomach upsets due to the food, however there were a lot of people in the hotel that were more seriously ill.

Over all, I think the resort is one of the best in condition at Varadero. We love this resort, but let me talked about down sides first. 3 out of 6 days we were there, we have water problem. There was no water in the morning, one day was no water till 4 pm. Imagine no toilet can be flashed in the entire resort till 4 pm. not pretty.
The varieties of food selection are great! But nothing really stands out, most are pale. But Papaya was great there. Most Al la carts are disappointing, but steaks are surprisingly good. I tried spaghettini three times in buffet with three different chef, they all made it differently, (one uses butter and spices, one only use spices, one doesn't even add anything ) only the first night it taste good. Don't think they had equal training.
Services quality are generally good, few greats, and few Bads. One waitress from bistro was really rude, totally destroyed our night; couple front desk was not helping. Other than that, our second butler, Gabriel, was amazing, responsible and efficient! Room maids did wonderful job. Entertainments (including jazz bar and musician in the restaurants) are above expectations!
The beach is fantastic! Check out my picture. When the sea is flat, make sure you try those inclusive water sports.
The resort is clean, great looking, great beach, almost great service, so the disappointment on food won't stop me suggesting this one! I'm still glad we stayed there.

Lovelly hotel with very helpful friendly staff. You have a personal "butler" who will arrange whatever you need. Whether that's dinner reservations, a taxi or just fruit juice in your room. The beach is immaculate and the grounds are very well maintained. I would definitely stay here again.

Yes!!
The staff and resort are equally beautiful and we had a phenomenal stay here. From the food (delicious), to the beach, to the comfort, we felt that we were living like a true queen and king. We were not here long enough, however, and are planning a trip back very, very soon!
