Wife, family members and I went in April. The beach has no comparison to any. The hotel is O.K. Service is not so good at the restaurant; a stack of plates stood on the table for a while. Food was nicely cooked although not a great variety. The lobby bar was the best of all. Bar tender Emilio always had a smile on his face. Piña Colada there was awesome but I can't say the same about Piña Colada at the pool bar because a lot of ingredients were absent.

The maintenance is done poorly. Animation team does nothing during the day. Shows in the evening are very good. Performance is professional. Personell in hotel is grumpy and lazy. I would not recomend going here.

Worst hotel I stayed in in Cuba, and I've been to some 2 and 3 star hotels in Cuba that were way better. Changed rooms twice, first two with mold on ceiling/walls, cockroaches running around at night. Food is extremely limited - the only fish served was from a can, and something boiled and this is in a country surrounded by sea. Both of us got bacterial food poisoning. Bad service, lacklustre entertainment. Waste of time and money.

Very good option for the price, room was nice and recently renovated. Amazingly friendly staff lobby bar(Taylor, Nelson, Nayivis), juice bar (Pedro), buffet (Ali, Thomas, Gentle and Swani) and bell boy Noriel.

Ok this was our first trip to Cuba and we absolutely loved our stay at Tuxpan. The staff were amazingly friendly, they truly became our friends. They would remember our preferences and were quick to provide whatever we asked for. We chose to tip often, though not large amounts, and the staff really appreciate this, as the real pay for the staff comes from tips and NOT from their actual salary. Let me say they are still friendly even if you don't tip but they are willing to really extend themselves when you are gracious enough to tip.
The Hotel is not luxurious but is very clean, the staff work tirelessly to make it so. We first had a room on the second floor which did have a musty smell which is to be expected with such humidity. Due to my asthma we requested a room on a higher floor as the air quality in them was better.
I do require a wheelchair for mobility and this can be an issue here. As only one of the three guest elevators was operational, we first had to use the staff elevator to access the ground level/pool/beach/buffet, this unfortunately became disabled half way through our 1 week stay requiring us to resort to using the stairs, a flight of about 10 stairs, for the duration. There was also no wheelchair access to the a la cart restaurant "El Rancho", which is located on the second floor but only accessible from the main floor and also up a flight of about 10 stairs. I have the ability to do some stairs but had to either leave my wheelchair or have someone carry it up, my husband usually, but staff often offered to assist us. This makes the resort inconvenient for persons with disabilities. The staff try their best to make up for this and help out as much as they can, offering a hand. On the plus side their is a walkway/boardwalk all the way to the beach, which was just beyond the pool and AMAZING!
Food in the El Rancho restaurant was quite good, the buffet was hit and miss, as with all the resorts here in Cuba. It's open air so there are birds flying around and flies - which can't really be avoided. The fresh hot grilled food was always quite good. We found that the food at the bottom of the warming trays was the hottest. There were always fresh made to order eggs and omelettes in the morning as well as many different juices, and breads as well as a few fruits. The ice cream was very good :D.
The location is great with the bus stop about 500yards away, it's a bit of a walk but not too bad. Taxi is about 10cuc each way into the downtown core. In house store is of course expensive and our friend was less than impressed with her visit to the hotel doctor for travellers diarea ($135 cuc) but there if needed.
Having stayed in other 2-5 star resorts and speaking with guests of the other "5" star resorts here, I would classify this as a 3 star by "American standards" but very decent by Cuban standards - most ranging 3&1/2 to 4 stars.
I highly recommend this resort. We definitely will return to Tuxpan!response / report this review -

The hotel is a huge one in the comunism style. A big swimming pool, few bars and restaurants. For the restaurants you have to book in advance. The room is quite ok, with an old furniture and, some time, with warm water instead of hot water. The people are very kind and helpful. In Varadero there are few hotels, no shoping or promenade area.

Quite simply the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Check in is at four o clock and after a long days travel to get there we found that no food is served here until six o clock. The staff were totally unfriendly throughout our stay apart from one girl who worked in the bar. When we attended the buffet dinner there was a bird flying around the room with the uncovered food, and there were flies all over the beef. Myself and my partner were both ill the following day. The pool area is nice, but when there were activities going on in the pool area they were excruciatingly loud. The only good thing I can say about this place, and I have been trying to find any positives, is that the French fries in the beach bar were warm. Everything else was disastrous. Admittedly the beach is fantastic, but as this is nothing to do with the hotel staff and more nature's doing, it did little to redeem what was a dreadful experience. Super Hotel with a lot of entertainment going on all day. The pool bar and pools are huge with plenty of chairs. Nice beach, too. All the staff are very helpful with any kind of information. Close to the golf course and a north american style mall. Only a short bus ride into downtown or take the trip to see all the other hotels. I am coming back here for sure!
