Staff was great with sorting out a reservation issue when we arrived, bartenders were friendly and great to chat with, drinks were stiff and the party was great. The room was good other than a faulty power outlet, beds were surprisingly comfortable. It's within walking distance from several venues and is a great place to end the night. I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in the area.
Good location as its pretty close to everything. Good breakfast in the restaurant at discount price for people staying at the hostel. The rooms are OK, though it can get a bit loud if youre at the side of the street.
One of the worst places to stay in Vancouver. I ended up here for 2 weeks unfortunately. Excess amount of beds in the room for no good reason, thick layers of dust and grime everywhere. The cleaner genuinely shouted at me because a blanket was on the dirty floor and got dirty (the floor which she - doesn't - clean)
Even on arrival you'll be waiting at reception before somebody finally bothers to show up (there will be plenty of staff looking at you beforehand though).
Sets of staircases impossible to carry luggage up, especially if you've travelled any distance to get there. Of course there's nobody to help!
Rats, mice and the odd cloud of flies in the rooms on a daily basis to keep you company.
Bathrooms cleaned and closed at 8am, so you know, the time everybody gets up to pee.
Whole plays smells like urine in general.
Just really really awful, if you have a choice then don't stay here.
Heritage building should probably just be torn down.
Staff are certainly pretty nice and very accomodating. The showers could have been better ( very small and not very clean). Toilets are too far away from some rooms. ( only one in each floor). But overall it was a good stay. Staff will help you as much as they can and its got a good vibe to it. The location is also very good and its close to food and train station.
Cool place. I stayed there on Tuesday night with my bicycle. The girl at reception, Kelsey, was an absolute saint. She was unbelievably kind and accommodating.
The location is perfect but the hostel is old and not very clean, even if they try to. There are Mouse running in the kitchen and some rooms. The kitchen and bathrooms are small.
It's a hostel, and a pretty rough and busy one at that. Don't expect to go to bed before 3 on the weekend, because the bar music downstairs thumps through the floor. It's pretty much a place to sleep with a fun bar downstairs. If that's what you're looking for, this is your place.
Great location, right near the centre of Vancouver. Easy to get to from the station (about a 20min walk). Good common room and kitchen, with pub downstairs (can be loud, but didn't particularly bother me). Rooms clean with lockers in. Bathrooms not the best, with only two toilets and showers, but that's manageable and didn't bother me too much. Reception really friendly. A good stay!
Rude staff, music was way too loud my ears were ringing. Beds very very comfy. There should be warning about the noise before staying here.
I met a friend who was staying at the hostel for a few drinks. The bar has a decent ambiance about it, but the servers weren't as attentive as we'd have liked. I'll still be back I'm sure; the Cambie is a local institution as far as I'm concerned.
My two friends and I wanted a place to stay for the night around the Gastown area of Vancouver. I stayed at the Cambie about 5 years ago and had a nice time.
We booked ahead of time so we knew we would have at least a room and it being a shared room, we thought having one stranger wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Well we were wrong! The girl at the desk while checking in mentioned he'd been there a long time but was cool. We opened the door to the room to find this huge mess of clothes and empty beer bottles scattered everywhere. What scared the crap out of all of us was the 10" knife sticking into the floor!!! The room smelled like piss and I asked the guys if we should just find another place, but it was really late, and if we did leave and go somewhere else then we wouldn't get any sleep.
We stopped into the pub on the main level and had a beer then went back up to bed. The one guy staying in the room was now in his bed. We quietly got into our beds but he wakes up and thinks he's seeing 4 of us when there is only 3, and I quickly notice he's definitely on some kind of drugshe seems like he's tripping out and I tried not to talk to him. We get into our beds and do the best we can to sleep but this guy is making weird noises and coughing all night. That wouldn't be the worst thing in the world but he gets up out of his bed over and over in the night and paces around the room. Oh and that knife that was stuck into the floor, it was missing and we now feared for our lives! I never slept that night and my two friends didn't either. We laid on top of our sheets in all of our cloths and kept at least one eye open the whole night.
I partly blame myself because we didn't just leave the second we walked into what looked like a horror movie, but by the time we came back the second time it was very late and I assumed this Hostel wouldn't have placed us into a room with a murdererit turned out instead he must have just been a crack head because we didn't die that night
I will never put myself or my friends into a situation like this ever again! AND I hope no one else ever does either!
It was my first time staying in a hostel and I liked it pretty much. It was a safe place for girls and the price for the room came with simple but nice breakfast. Location is so perfect.
As far as cleanliness goes, it was great. They clean everyday and replace your sheets. Always a reliable place to get breakfast and fairly cheap beer at night. The real gem about this place is that there is so much to do when you walk around gastown. I was only disappointed by the fact I had to pay for parking while I was there. It was convenient to have a parking garage right across the street. Maybe they should offer a discount there.. The lounge was nice and it has a full kitchen. The free wifi also helped me survive my trip because I didn't have service.
I had a wildly interesting experience at this hostel wherein one of my roommates in the co-ed dorm returned home after a night of drinking, and relieved himself right against the wall near his bunk, then fell asleep. The hosts were apologetic of the experience, had the guest kicked out, and allowed me to switch into an all-female dorm with only two other guests, who turned out to be great fun as we explored the downstairs bar and surrounding night life the next night. However, as I checked out of that room the next day, we found a rat lying dead in the center of the floor of our room. So, take that as you will, internet. A cheap hostel, with a free breakfast included at the restaurant-by-day dive bar-by-night on the ground level..with some quirky residents to go along, you are sure to have an interesting experience in Gastown!
