A little noisy in the morning, a microwave in the room would be nice but overall a great place to stay and the staff are great

I have been a customer at Pauls motor inn for probably half a century. I wanted to think on the horrible experience at my last visit a month or so ago before reviewing. Here goes- I was quoted by phone a price which was the same as my last stay, this was done by me asking for the pleasant telephone clerk to check what my last rate was which was done and then confirming that would be the rate which was done and so I made reservation. When I arrived I signed in and noticed the price was double what I was quoted. When questioned and discussed I felt no longer being treated as a customer but as an enemy. The "manager" now appeared, even asking question as to what and where my business was in Victoria on this visit, denying that an error could be a possibility, basically calling me a liar. Then ordering that I should leave or the police would be called. I would not be charged a "reservation fee" was the only consideration. No attempt to speak with the booking agent was made and we had nowhere to stay on a busy weekend in Victoria. Being in the hospitality business all my life I further tried in the following week to speak with senior management to try to assist their operation. I was told that a video had been reviewed and their senior manager would not speak directly to me or to my issue. The place is dated/not perfection but always was a reasonable familiar business stop in Victoria. So be sure you get some solid form of confirmation when reserving. I will not return and will advise all I know the same. My recommendation is to look elsewhere. If some note is posted after from this company with some explanation or ? it is meant for you the reviewer and not me, as some form of face saving reassurance. So pay no attention as what I wrote is what occurred.

Location is nice, and within walking distance of many great food places. The room and bed are nice. The main drawback has been the bathroom, particularly the shower. The head is very low, and the water temperature is prone to randomly changing. Otherwise fairly nice. There was a loud event held in the parking lot one evening during my stay, but thankfully the noise didn't continue into the night.

Been here for a dozen group reservations. Inexpensive and a great value. Close to everything we needed, friendly staff, not uptight. Late checkout availability till 2pm. Rooms newly renovated and non smoking. The diner-style restaurant reflects the character of the motel: confident, easy going, well worn, clean, tacky, and very approachable.

Nice hotel but furniture is too big for the roomI kept having to move the chair by the door to get out of the room. If I'd had a traveling companion there's no way the two of us could have eaten at the table in the room, there simply wasn't enough room. It was nice to have the refrigerator and to be close to one edge of downtown. I was surprised they didn't offer a discount of at least 10% if you ate in their own restaurant. Very nice people at the front desk and restaurant. It was wonderful that it was pet friendly. Very clean and well-maintained.

I will summarizing my experience staying at this place.
Smell: when I first walked in the room is smelled like dead human skin. If you are not familiar with that smell, its like if you have entered a teenage boy room who has not showered nor got out if his room for a really long time.
Cleanliness: Both curtains have not been cleaned nor changed as you can see from the pictures how much little hair was on them. There is dust everywhere and there some bunny dust stuck out of the fan in the washroom.
Carpet: The carpet in very tough, its almost like you are walking on gravel.
Internet: Internet is good, speed is great and it login to your phone by itself, meaning that you online need accept the terms once (if you know what I mean).
Location: Great, near buses and walking distant from downtown area.
Water: hot water in shower is available.
Quietness: I was staying on the first floor, the doors of the rooms lead to the outside and parking. On Friday night, lots of kids and drunk people or even young adult knocked on the door heavily for fun (I could hear what they are saying). That was extremely annoying, woke me up several times and startled me. A simple reminder when checking in, would not hurt :S
Price: The price rate is very similar to hotel so it was not worth it for the experience I have got. I payed $89 per night when I found fancier hotel for $85 per night. I know that is my poor choice, however, my original plan included an extra stay which extended to April first (spring season rate changes). In other hotel the rate went up to $120 per night while this place added $5 so I thought it was worth it but it was not and I ended by canceling the last night anyway!
Staff friendliness: I only met front desk staff. most of them are friendly. One of them was not, but she was not rude either.
Lighting is great and there was an air conditioner/heater/fan machine was worked wonderfully.
Comfort: I did not like any of their pillows, but that really depends on one's preference. There was no mirror for the dresser, there was one by the sink. So I had to stand and lean to apply my makeup, but the lighting was great so that worked out alright. There is no chair for the dresser and their two red leather sofas were heavily scratched and torn.response / report this review -

Paul's is affordable, clean, and very central. There's only a handful of rooms on the top floor so, if you travel with a group, you can easily get the entire top floor to yourselves!

Nice place in general, pretty close to down town. The food downstairs is good too, for a decent price. Robert was clean and updated, and there was always parking.
My only complaint would be the older lady at the front desk on night shift was pretty paranoid and rude to me, but the rest of the staff was great. Particularly the waitress and the restaurant, super fast!response / report this review -

Service was fast. Waitress was friendly, upbeat and attentive. Food was good. Not high end. But quality for what you pay. Price was cheaper than expected. Overall great dining experience. Would come back again.
