Stayed one night in October 2017 BED BUGS found in room !!! The fat blonde girl behind the counter could only offer to upgrade me to a more expensive room. No apology what so ever. As well as I packed up to leave it took me four phone calls to get through in order to let the blonde desk girl know of the bed bugs.I could hear the phone ringing through the wall in the next room..as the phone rang she was busy yelling at her kids who were running rampant up and down the halls until about 1030 pm (her whole family must live in house)..beats welfare I guess !
Second stay attempt (didn’t learn my lesson) was 22 Nov 17 Same chubby blonde desk workerI simply asked a few direct questions and she responded with attitude, disrespect and ultimately refused my HI membership renewell and a bed space for my son and I. (NICE job HI people).I tried calling back a couple hours later and it took four times to get through to her.her kids I guess live in house and they apparently are a priority over guests.
On my October visit she didn’t want to see proof of the BED BUGS.as well she said she knew of the problem but added “it should of” been cleared up after summer visitors. My upgraded more expensive room still had the spray bomb in it from a bed bug infestation as well..class act !
Street people living in house !? YUP !!!
I will never stay at the Nanaimo Painted Turtle Guest House ever again. Bed bugs and disrespectful staff..I could go on but.yah I will just leave it at this.I highly advise to look elsewhere for a bed, this is not a place for anyone respectful.response / report this review -

Ok. The staff was efficient, facilities fantastic. The place is super clean and the linens are better than hotel quality. Being from a different country, I wanted to meet more travelers. Unfortunately I had some strange encounters with Canadians that are using this hostel as their place to live. The first night I was put in a female dorm with a 70 year old self professed hippy Canadian woman, who tried to sit close to me and kept lifting up her skirt, talking about her sexual encounters with men, claiming she chanelled the illuminati? Huh??? I ignored this, until the next night she stripped down to her undies and walked around the room. When I ignored her she moved close to my bed and started asking me questions to get more attention. For the remainder of my time, I was unable to relax. I fled to another room with other foreigners. Do you know that woman found me and followed me to that room? Although this is a great hostel, I was unable to meet many cool travelers and was unfortunately waiting for another strange encounter. I wish they would not let locals stay here. This stay gave me a bad vibe about the area.

Painted Turtle Guesthouse best place i stayed in for one good sleep from alberta the beds are soft nice cool chilled you name it the people are nice helpful and great. i would stay there again if i had a chance

Clean and comfortable. Room was very hot but without AC that can't be helped. Front desk staff very kindly waited up for our late arrival.

Exceptionally clean hostel, big and spacious, fully stocked clean kitchen and comfortable common areas. Dorms rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable. Plenty of clean bathrooms available. Check-in was fast and friendly and the location right downtown is within walking distance to most amenities. Public transit also stops right down the street. This was one of the better hostels that I have visited in Canada. But, nothing in terms of hostel activities. Good price for a dorm and weekly rates available depending upon the season.

Was a few years ago. Staff was really good and the rooms were great! Close to downtown and restaurants. Also the peir. Price's very reasonable. We loved it here! 😜

Very cute. We stayed in the private room. The bed is SO comfortable. The linens are to die for. Best sleep ever. Great location. We walked on the ferry from Vancouver and stayed one night. Were super pleased with the central location. Walking distance to shops and eats. Thanks for being a great place to rest my head while we explore this amazing town.

Stayed here in a 4 person bunk for one night. Overall staff was friendly and helpful, and the place was very clean. Lock boxes are provided but are short, so only big enough for a laptop/wallet/phone. WiFi access was quick enough for videos without any downtime. Some noise from the neighboring places and there was a few families with smaller kids.

Clean, cozy great beds in the private rooms! Nice location right downtown. Common areas including kitchen and bathrooms were well taken care of.
