Stayed in a 12 bed dorm. Barely any plug sockets at all so there's one long extension cable with more extension cables coming out of it to make do. Beds are okay. No air con in rooms at all so it can get hot.

Free WiFi in some communal areas but it seems to work in my room too which is on the second floor. You can pay for premium WiFi.

Shower rooms and the showers themselves are big but so far I've come across a couple that do not work.

Kitchen is poorly equipped - no can opener, barely any sharp knives, two pots.

Washing machines and dryers can be card operated and look quite new.

Not the best of atmospheres in the communal areas, it seems a bit too big and everyone is just doing their thing and keeping themselves to themselves.

Despite all of the above, there's definitely worse hostels around, and if you're stopping by short term this would be fine. Staff are friendly too, although I was charged the full price of my stay despite paying part of it online on Hostel World. Got refunded straight away when I mentioned it though.

My friend and I stayed 3 nights at Discovery in a female dorm. Be aware that the place is huge, not really clean and certainly needs a lot of love. It felt like there was so much people coming and going that the staff was a bit overwhelmed. With this said all the staff was very friendly and helpful. The positive point is that the location was amazing and we could walk from everywhere. The proximity with the Queen Victoria markets is a plus since we could get cheap and tasty food.

No air conditioning or heating units- unbearable heat during summer and unbearable cold during winter. Plus rooms have very poor air circulation which makes for terrible sleep hygiene. People in the hallways smoke despite no smoking signs- security slow to respond and enforce. Room keys stop working frequently even after multiple "fixes". Sheets and towels not changed at promised frequency. No freezer available. Bathrooms often have no soap and showers are not consistent in quality from stall to stall. Bathrooms get cleaned at inconvenient times. The free WiFi that's only available in the lobby is very slow and spotty.

I've stayed in a lot of hostels but this is by far the WORST one I have ever stayed When you arrive you have to wait an hour just to check in then after that your key stops working so you have to go back to reception and wait all over again.

I went to have a shower but there was someone ' cleaning' so I had to wait till they were done. When they had finished I went back to find a USED PERIOD PAD stuck to the shower wall. The next shower has massive clumps of hair everywhere, the one after that was covered in mud So what were they cleaning?

The kitchen is just as bad or even worse. Not enough utensils, always dirty. No one washes up after themselves so the sinks are always full. The bins don't get emptied so they are always overflowing. You'd get ill from cooking

    Please don't stay here!!!

I was very unimpressed with this place. The rooms were dirty. They were never thoroughly cleaned. I am sure half of the stuff on the floor was left behind by other backpackers. The communal bathroom had an awful urinal smell and reminded me of facilities you use while camping. The night I arrived I was taken to a room in which the beds weren't ready and I had to make my own along with two other gentleman checking in also. This happened to 3 other guests during my week stay here. The business couldn't figure out which beds were vacant or not and when in doubt would do nothing. The hostel wasn't that great for the value and they don't hold mail even though I was told otherwise. All in all this place was an utter disappointment. I would never recommend this place, well maybe to my enemy's.

    Not impressed
Feel very mislead, from photos to how it's actually looks is a vast difference. It's run down, shabby looking and frankly quiet gross. Paint peeling off the walls, rusty pipes in the dorms, key cards are temperamental and there was only 3powepoints for a room of 6, so if you're last home at night you don't get a PowerPoint.

I chose this hostel due to how nice it looked and mainly for its facilities of kitchen and washing machines and it was pointless.

No washing machines working which makes it very difficult when I was working 12hours a day and couldn't get anywhere else to do washing.

Communal kitchen was rather gross, not much cooking equipment and what there was it was broken, not working or packed away filthy and I was worried of getting sick from using the kitchen. The dining area above the kitchen is foul and not sure it's been cleaned in a long time, there was something resembling rat droppings on the floor.

Continental breakfast included was pretty poor effort it was white bread or cornflakes.

Bathrooms were average at best and not sure the showers get cleaned to much. The bathroom looks nothing like the photos on their website. You can't have a warm shower as the water temperature constantly changes from warm at best to completely freezing and the pressure is really inconsistent, the floor gets super slippery, I slipped and fell in there one evening.

I've paid less and stayed at nicer backpackers in the past in lots of places including in Melbourne and I'm regretting that I stayed here.

I stayed here not long ago and found this to be the worst experience of the camp I was on. I stayed in a room with 7 other girls who all found it equally disgusting. I remember seeing the inside of my cover and noticed the insert was dark brown. I almost hanged myself. The bathrooms were disgusting and I felt very uncomfortable showering or even changing. I noticed how a friend was denied acess to the elevator despite her leg injury. I, myself, was denied acess after I badly injured my ankle. The staff were very rude and didn't bother to care about the students younger then us were present before they proceeded to swear and make accusations. I longed to leave to the place even for a few hours to escape the smells, the noises and other terrible conditions. I was also annoyed at the fact I was given a broken card and was locked out of my room plenty of times. The toilets were the most disgusting part. I will never return and if forced, I will kill myself.

I had just recently stayed over a period of a week and had received very bad service overall. I was in a room of 14, in the room the sheets were yellow and stained everywhere. The bathrooms were discusting with hair absolutely everywhere and holes and patches on the floors and walls and not to mention the doors were SEE THROUGH!!! The food including breakfast, lunch and dinner. The plates at every meal were as if they had been strayed with a vinegar solution, and the food it's self was rubbery and somehow they made the fish taste like off chicken. They were rude and disrespectful of everyone staying at that time. This was very disappointing due to this being a first experience in Melbourne gross.

As a frequent traveler, I've stayed in many hostel and hotels in various locations around Australia, and it is safe to say Discovery Groups Melbourne is the saddest and most life-threatening excuse for an hostel there is.

The state and uncleanliness were deplorable; I nearly passed away from cardiac arrest upon walking into the building. The meals tasted like cardboard, I wouldn't even feed it to my dog.

Upon arriving certain limitations were forced upon us, we were not permitted to use the lift, throw anything out the window (even by accident), or even roll our suitcases up the stairs or would be asked to leave immediately, i was prepared to throw my own self out the window. We were also not allowed to go to the lobby, im almost certain prisoners at the Old Melbourne Goal had more freedom than we did.

The rooms were depressing and grim and not to mention unbearably cold; we were not allowed to bring our own pillows, blankets or sleeping bags, I am really relived i didn't contract pink eye. The showers ran out of hot water and the jets did not operate effectively. The only good thing was the location.

My experience at the discovery Melbourne was less then enjoyable. The way I was treated was appalling, the rooms and sanitary of the hostel were atrocious. The staff were rude and unhelpful. The bedrooms had bird poo on the sheets, the windows physically didn't shut, there was 2 power points in each room and the lifts were off limits for our groups while we had heavy bags and were made to lug up the stairs. The hot water ran out leaving students and teachers leaving us with no hot water to shower with.

I felt personally victimised by one of your members of staff who was in charge of my school as I was yelled at and verbally abused by him for speaking to one of my teachers.

I dropped some flyers off for my comedy festival show and they seemed very receptive to trying to get people along to the show.

Reception was great, lobby had a nice vibe to it. Bed was comfortable, bathrooms got the job done, good location. Only stayed for one night, but I would recommend it. My only complaint would be the free wifi was only from 10-4, but that's the only negative.

Very affordable. Stayed in 6 bed dorm during Australia Open for around $26 per night. Has hot showers and enough toilet facilities.
The free breakfast wasn't the best as they had only 2 toasters for everyone, not the most organised breakfast.

Customer service was friendly, the bar in the basement is affordable and good for a few pints or jugs of beer/cider.

Very crowded place. My floor only had 2 toilets for the entire floor. So there was a long line every morning. The rooms were separated far from common area which made it good at night when people wanted to sleep. Laundry was expensive, $9 for one complete cycle. Kitchen was very big and lots of cooking space. Free rice bin for guest. Lots of food freebies left on shelf for people to share. The couches and chairs were old and broken. Soon as you walk out the front doors is smoking, and you can't escape the smoke and are forced to walk through it all. Could be a very nice place, just needs some updates. Free towels to shower with was nice. But the shower was hard to maintain. It would go from super cold to super hot and kept switching.

Decent enough hostel with reasonable prices. The rooms go up to 16 beds which can be a bit much, the toilet facilities are quite large and relatively clean which is good.
The staff are generally knowledgeable and friendly, the kitchen is large but there were not many pans or utensils. Even though there are tags to attach to bags in the fridges, I still had food stolen from my bag.

Good location for town and for public transport, the wifi is relatively decent and it's not too loud there.
