We were a little anxious about what awaited us and can only add the highest praise for this standout department. The staff, from the security guards all the way through to the cashier, were professional, polite and helpful. The renewal of your driver's license, providing you have checked all that you need for the process, will more than likely take you no more than a couple of ours. BRAVO to the team at Gallows Hill!
Quick and efficient process for licence renewal. Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity. PS. Bring your own black ink pen. None are provided.
Cool ask for the form before going inside and complete while you are waiting in the queue. Once inside the process is quick less than 15 minutes.
Super organized license department. You don’t need an appointment. Just your ID and drivers license and two photos (you can get them taken outside, cost is R70 for 4 photos). You wait in queue outside, my wait was 30 min. Then they give you a green form to complete when you get inside. You wait for about 5 min to do step 1 (ID and old drivers verification); 20 min to do step 2 (eye test, don’t do one before seems like they still do it). 10 min to do step 3 (payment, R140). So done in 90 min. Then you get a receipt and get told to collect in 4-6 weeks). Not sure why Gauteng can’t get themselves organized like the Western Cape.
This was the worst experience I have ever had trying to renew my driver's license.
There was a very long queue to get into the licensing department which is where we spent the majority of our time.
We queued before 8am and only left at 12. 3.5hours we spent in the cold, with an ice wind hitting us and we even endured a shower of rain outside.
We are not sure why the queue took so long to move because the renewal, eye test and payment took 20 minutes! Only once someone in the queue began complaining about how long we had to wait did the line start moving again.
The process is antiquated. We shouldn't be having to do a license renewal in person. Not to mention we could not really observe social distancing protocols because of the long lines.
It was a disgrace, really.
Maybe Ive just been lucky! Friendly Helpful staff, resulting in efficient license renewal and super quick fine payment!
Come prepped. Although there's a wait, *most* of the staff are making the best out of the bad facilities - moving visitors through swiftly. Gallows Hill is quicker than Ottery.
Unfortunately I have never had a good experience here. There are usually no staff to help you choose which lines to go. The security seems to double as the info staff, but only if they are in a good mood. Everyone that works there seems on edge and very rude and upset. Highly don’t recommend having to go here.
Experiences vary and one can lucky or unlucky with the service one gets in terms of time it takes and who helps one.
I have had feedback from some folk that foreign Nationals like Zimbabweans can have a really tough time getting drivers licences.
Some of the examiners are intimidating and scary while others put one at ease and make the process more pleasant.
It seems the traffic department is trying to drag itself into the 21st century with more stuff being doable online which is great.
Remember to bring a pen if you are renewing or applying or transferring licences.
I have been trying to contact Green Point Traffic department for the past 2 days. No one else picks up the phone!!? My fines have been paid but the mark was not lifted on my name so I cannot do a car transfer onto my name. This is so frustrating! Good customer service is having someone answer the phone even when they are not the correct contact person but at least can direct you or I form you when the the right person will be available!
Please note opening hours! Google cannot accept my edit online. They close at 3:30 not 4. If they have not seen to everyone by then, they send you home tell you to come back tomorrow morning.
Had to pay a fine for a friend who was out of town and staff were super helpful. Everyone directed me in the right direction and stuff just got done.
Keep it up, Gallows Hill!!!
It’s OK. I was there for a license renewal. I was here the one day and the system was offline, the next it was online again. The queues do move, but it is slow. The people know what they are doing, just very busy. Fill in your form while waiting in the eye test cue. Have photos taken before across the road. Bring a pen.
For a licensing place it is good. Friendly and pretty quick. Photo place across the road if you need. Don't forget to bring a pen.
Staff were friendly, helpful and informative. Was in and out in an hour. Very pleasant experience!
Less talking, more doing - they are getting it done!
Renewing your license is a 3-step process, (1) get the form and complete - remember foto (2) eye test and finger print scan - if you already require glasses to drive, take an optometrist certificate as backup (3) pay renewal fee, then wait for 6-7 weeks to receive SMS.
Even though they were very busy, waiting wasn't more than 10-15 minutes per step.
ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT - i specially got an eye test done before hand so that i don't have to sit in their long lines. NOW they wont accept my eye test because i have to fail theirs first before they will consider the eye test I got done at an OPTOMETRIST. And what kind of government institution does mot have card facilities in a digital era, welcome to 2017
By far, the best testing centre. Instructors ensure you are calm and chat to you. Didn't even feel the stress of taking a test
I had a rather terrible first time experience at this traffic department.
The lady that was working on Saturday 21 January 2017, at the window where you get your form for your drivers license test.
She was the rudest public servant I came across.
Myself and a friend went to make drivers license appointments and since we got married recently, our ID documents does not have our marital surnames on as yet.
The lady then refused to help us.
We tried explaining that usually wherever we go, we are helped with our ID's because your surname gets changed on the system. Even my friend is busy purchasing a house using the exact same ID document; and with an attitude and shouting from the other side of the window she said to us " I do n't care what they do at the places, this is the traffic department and we do things differently here!"
I then said to the lady it is okay, we understand the rules but you could be more polite in telling us about them. I also told her she did not have to be so rude. She then exclaimed, "Rude ?!" and walked away.
What a sour public servant representing the City Of Cape Town.
We often hear so many complaints about our country, but I have to commend the Gallows Hill Traffic Department. I arrived over lunch time and was greeted by a very friendly security guard, who showed me exactly what to do and where to go. I didn't stand in a queue once and was met by friendly and efficient service throughout. I experienced the same service when renewing my driver's license last year as well. This is a very well-oiled machine with great and helpful staff.
