Very interesting experience. You will learn a lot more about South Africa and how it was to live during the apartheid that has shaped the country. They also have some temporary exhibits - now in April/18 I've seen one about Mandela which was awesome!!

Even as a South African, I find endless interest in learning about the history of my country from different perspectives. Especially being able to feel the confinement and isolation of both the inside cell and island cell. It creates a lasting impression with me each time I visit.

If you haven’t been to the Apartheid Museum, put it on your list for your next weekend adventure. What an incredibly put together walk through of our history. Informative and touching. The pictures are moving and some quite haunting.
We did this as part of a Stop on the City Sightseeing bus tour but I will be back to spend more time.

Emotionally very intense; it's heartbreaking to read and go through the museum, but at the same time it gives you an amazing idea of how that heartbreak doesn't even start to compare with the difficulty and atrocities South Africans endured.

Very well designed and curated museum. I would recommend taking 3-4 hours to see all of it.

As a small side note, I would perhaps not visit with small kids as there's a lot of text and it's heavy.

We have been here a couple of times and it is excellent, but very, very emotional. The set up is very good and it is very well done as you walk through the trauma of apartheid. Absolutely unbelievable! I was very moved and overwhelmed by it all to say the least. We stared incredulously at the initial plaque which was showing the reclassification of different colour groups from on category to another and just couldn’t believe it and how this could have happened. It was also very good to have experienced this with my wife and family and for us all to have done this together. I went through as a black (although I am white) and they went through as white (although they are black and coloured). Very friendly and helpful staff and excellent service. Thank you Mandela 😊🤗😘. Very well presented history from the beginnings of racial segregation in South Africa up to the present day. Identifying the political turning points from the first white settlements onwards. Moving and informative, few museums can tell history as vividly as this. Excellent.

Excellent and well designed facility! well worth a visit if you have at least two to three hours to spare to learn more about the past of this beautiful country. I would however not recommend that you take young children as there is a lot of text and not much interactivity. Our eldest (15yrs old) just about managed to keep it together. The youngest (9yrs old) lost interest before we got to the main exhibition space.

Looking to learn and understand South African past during apartheid. The Apartheid Museum is well designed, historical and well researched. Everyone should take the time to experience it however you will need to spare about 2 to 3 hours to go through the whole museum.

Worth the visit to delve into the history of this country.
You'll need around 1.5 - 2 hours to go through the whole place (even longer if you want to really read 70% of the items).

There are no cameras allowed in some sections of the museum.
The gift shop when I went was about 70% stocked so you won't find everything you're after
The Cafe was busy and some people were waiting for their food for around 20 - 30 minutes.

Being located next to an amusement park can be somewhat distracting.

Interesting museum. Well put together, but even the short version of the exhibit is very long in terms of the amount of literature one has to read. It's a bit too much to take it all in. It took us around 2 and a half hours to get through it and we could have spent double the time as we skipped some texts and videos. The 20min video towards the end was good. Couldn't see the temporary exhibition. Can't take photos, even without a flash.

The museum is really well done. We got a student discount as well. Which was amazing. It was just really spooky. It made me feel awful for having the color of skin I have, which I didn't even choose.
The museum is all concrete so it's freezing cold in there. Bring a jacket.

Interesting experience

- you need the map, without it you are lost.

Plan your day. You need minimum 2 1/2 hours to get the real story. If you do not know the story at all better not go is a waste for you.

Some of the reviewers saying is a life changing experience for them, I would disagree. Yes apartheid was a story but not such strong like story Auswitz!

The museum itself very good set up, nice videos, pictures, testimonies. What I did not understand is what the Prime Minister that establish the apartheid wanted to achieve. Did he had any plan? Or he just did it to get the white votes?

Many questions behind many arguments, that the historians of the future will answer

very well curated and updated contents. The facilities are relatively new so everything worked. I think guided visits would enrich the experience. We went by ourselves and 3 hours were not enough for all the materials

A must see if you are in Johannesburg. Very powerful experience and a lot of information. The museum has a very interesting layout. Plane some hours here if you want to take in everything.

Lots of information. Impossible to read and look at everything. Take it easy and concentrate on what interests you most. You'll walk away having learnt a lot. Young children should be guided and displays explained by an adult.

Creative layout with multimedia that keeps you captivated. Enough content to keep you there for hours so bring snacks for the midway stop. Could use a bit more maintenance and polishing though.
