The rooms are okay but don't expect to find service here. This is the second night in a row that the food has taken foreverand there are no waiters to be seen. From all the Protea Hotels I've stayed in this has by far been the worst.
I wonder what do the managers and staff think of the service they provide. And if someone ever checks up on them.
Honestly, I am very sure you will find a better place to stay near this hotel.

I had a five star experience! The room was larger than I expected! It was definitely up to American standards. The bed was comfy and having the a/c was wonderful. The food is great. The buffet style give you ease of mind to have variety. The staff was over the top friendly. It has a restaurant attached if you desire a switch in food. I felt perfectly safe the entire time. There is a LIFT! So staying on upper floors is easy! Also the hotel has a shuttle service to the airport. I highly recommend this hotel! Amenities are simple but more than enough to keep you happy for your stay! Oh, grocery shopping, pharmacy shopping and local shopping within 5 minute drive!! Uber is in Joburg!

Good Points: Quite nice and affordable. Buffet is alright and cheap, not enough varieties though. Thursdays are best it's grill day and you can have your fill. Rooms are clean & cozy. The receptionists are nice and attend to you with smiles

Bad Points: No gym room. You have to use another complex where you have to pay.
Accommodation does not include breakfast.
There's no water in the fridge.. you have to pay for water. The elevator is a bit cranky and misbehaves once in a while. Some of the waiters are a bit stuck up, doesn't smile much.. like you are a pain (my perception though)

However, if you are low budget I recommend this hotel. For a 3star hotel they are alright

I was here for 5 days when I visited SA, it was a lovely stay. Nice and friendly staff, complimentary breakfast with lots of options to choose from. Nice outdoor lake like view. Lovely rooms with nice view. It's just a place to be. No swimming pool.

Central help desk booked night for incorrect month. Reception completely unhelpful, told us to make an alternative reservation online.

Asked for payment upfront, when other protea hotels take payment on checkout. Insisted on taking additional authorisation in case we used the bar.

Otherwise a nice hotel.

We always enjoyed our stay at Protea Roodepoort Hotel. The services is great and staff very friendly. But we feel must bring it to your attention, first of all the bed we had, was very uncomfortable, my wife and I had to make sure that we do not fall off the bed. The last time we had two of those beds in our room and it was very comfortable. I left every morning just after 6 am because we had a convention at NASREC, and I phoned on Saturday if they can make a change but unfortunately my wife left at 8 am so there was no one to pack our luggage, to change. But why did they give us the room in the first place when our booking states that we are 2 adults.

Also the room when we move in on Friday, we had to call for the maintenance to fix the toilet seat that was loose, the towel rail on the shower door was lose and the soap holder was loose.
