Awesome cocktails and great veggie food for a city with not a ton of options. Great selection of tea with or without booze. Grab a bite and a drink then take a tea for the road.

To be honest, there just isn't much to recommend this place. The tea selection was nice, but very expensive for what amounted to two small cups of tea. We ordered beet fritters and the cheese board. If you like beets, then that would be the highlight of your evening. They weren't to my taste, but I could appreciate that they were made well and had a very concentrated beet flavor. The cheese board was tasty but very expensive for what amounted to two ounces of pimento cheese, two ounces of goat cheese and tiny pile of shaved cheddar. About half the toasted bread was charred and the burnt taste overwhelmed the cheese. The roasted tomato soup was good and the highlight of my meal. It was unexpectedly spicy and had good flavor, though once again, for what amounted to a bowl of soup it was quite expensive. One of my compatriots ordered the hen dinner. The skin on the hen was flabby and the flavor was OK. The sides fared much better, with the grits getting a solid thumbs up.
The meal itself would have rated a three star review, but another star was taken off for service. Believe all the reviews that complain about service. It felt like we were seriously inconveniencing our server whenever she came over. The time between visits was inordinately long. Also, apparently Saturday is a TERRIBLE day to go to Hillbilly Tea as they run out of a lot of food options. Considering their menu is a very generously spaced three quarters of a page, this is extremely problematic. What is more problematic is when the server doesn't tell you what they are out of until you have already made your decision. There were two separate occasions during our dinner where one of us had selected an option only to then be told it was out and Oh here are the other items we are out of at the moment. And remember, she already behaved as if we had inconvenienced her, so saying we needed to review the menu for a few minutes meant that she didn't return to the table until she was delivering everyone else's order.
If the service improved, I may be tempted to try Hillbilly Tea again, but for the time being there are too many other places in Louisville that are doing the same thing with better service.response / report this review -

Living in central downtown and having a fairly good grasp on all the local spots I can't even begin to explain how disappointed my wife and I were after brunch at hillbilly tea. After careful review of the menu we both decided on the Lamb Burger which was overcooked and poorly seasoned. The burger had perfect grill marks however wasn't grilled at all it was cooked on something that mimicked a George Foreman. I think it's safe to say even a trace of something as simple as salt & pepper did not exist on our plates. The atmosphere was hands down rustic and warm. The coffee wasn't bad however if you're wanting chef inspired food that has even a hint of taste you're better off someplace else.

Great restaurant on Main Street. The decor was clean and fresh and really inviting. The menu was varied and full of interesting things. Love that all drinks were served in chilled glass jars.
Food was fresh and delicious. Staff were super friendly. Beer was cold, what more could you ask for on a hot summer's day.response / report this review
