There are a lot of rumors that this is the first tavern in America, and that George Washington drank here, but none of its true. When I really pressed them about it, there was no evidence, at all. Still, the atmosphere is cozy, there are a lot of historical relics on the walls borrowed from the historical society, and the menu isn't bad either. Food is a bit cliche but good. Cocktails are very adventurous, and they make a lot of their own ingedients. Get the "Modern Fashioned" - its an amazing and wholly unique variation on the old fashioned that has notes of cinnamon and walnuts that works fantastically.

He stopped in the small bar downstairs here which is very cozy and historic. Lots of good comfort food on the menu here and a fantastic beer selection. hard to get into the bar because it is so small so recommend coming outside of busy hours if you want to experience the bar.

I heard from one of the locals about the history of this property built in the late 1600's. If your looking for fine dining in a quaint atmosphere with some potential spirits of people who once were, this is your place. I sat in the first floor bar area and it was great. Staff was quick to tell me stories about the property and the food was absolutely amazing! Highly recommend!!

Food was good don't get me wrong. But the service for the price of the menu didn't match up. We had a 945 reservation and I guess the kitchen "closes" at 10 so they basically rushed us through our meal. The food was great. I ordered the Wellington only to receive the steak and fries. Which isn't even close to the same thing. I did not make it a big deal and just ate what they made me. However I would have expected the waitress to apologize by offering us a free round of drinks. Nothing. At a place that's trying to be high end that's the least they could have done. Dessert wasn't even offered to us. The check was dropped on the table. Lobster Mac was good. Would recommend this place and just hope the service you have is better.

Amazing food, great staff who never let your drinks go empty. Made reservations and was immediately shown to our table. Waiter had excellent recommendations for food, drink, and dessert!!! Rates in my top 5 restaurants!!! Great food and atmosphere. Definitely recommend to anyone!!

Not very welcoming. As we were walking in, a customer was storming out, yelling about waiting over an hour for his food. He was a well dressed gentleman with a very nicely dressed woman. The hostess immediately made me feel under dressed and lowly. We followed the irate couple out.
Hopefully it was just a bad night. My wife and had a great night there a couple years ago and vowed to go back. We dined upstairs, had a decent meal, and couldn't wait to hit the bar up there. It sounded like an old colonial tavern. After dinner we bellied up to the bar and enjoyed the ambiance and a few cocktails.
I was hoping for a similar experience this time but was sadly disappointed. There are far too many restaurants in Newport to be treated like that.response / report this review -

Came here for a drink while walking near the wharf. The atmosphere was incredible, especially if you enjoy visiting historical places. Their bar area was small but gave off the perfect feel for the oldest tavern in America! Great selection of wines and liquors!

Overrated. Survives on its historical bonafides only. Not recommended. Step out on the sidewalk, swing your arms, and hit a dozen other restaurants 100 times better. That applies to service, ambiance,and cuisine.

This place drips history.
It's the oldest operating Tavern in the U.S. being built in 1652 and becoming a tavern in the 1670s. It was used for housing by British troops during the Revolution.
Today, it's a really good restaurant with a cool tavern environment upstairs. Watch your head! People were a lot shorter in 1652 than most of us are today.response / report this review -

My wife and I dined here last night for our anniversary. She ordered the Beef Wellington and I had the Prime Hanger Steak. Her Wellington came out with raw dough and nothing inside the pastry but the steak. She sent it back and it returned to the table a few minutes later a steaming hot mess overcooked and mushy. She decided not to eat it. My steak was prepared fine but it was a small portioned plate. I would guess the steak to be 4-6 ounces. It was served over potatoes and mushrooms with onions on top. There were very little of the potatoes and mushrooms, which were delicious, and a mound of onions and greens on top. The onions were undercooked and tasted like straight vinegar. I did not complain about my dish because we already felt uncomfortable sending back the Wellington. The manager came and kindly apologized and said he would take the Wellington and our first round of cocktails off the bill. When the bill came they had only taken the Wellington and one drink off. By this point we were so disappointed we just wanted to leave and find dinner for my wife. They charge $42 for the Wellington and $36 for the Hanger steak. We left hungry, disappointed and still dropped $100 there.

Hands down the worst environment ever.
If you are pregnant, elderly, military, or ethnic, you should consider leaving before you walk in.
Walked in and got ignored. Then my family showed up and we were not even greeted. The manager simply shook her head and said it would be an hour. After we told her we would be sitting with our brother and his friend, who are officers in the Navy.
My mom is 56 years old, I'm pregnant, and we are all professionals: dental hygienist, registered therapist, published author, engineers, accountant, etc. I don't know how to describe what happened except as utterly embarrassing for this entire staff. The most flagrant display of discrimination I have ever seen.
We tried to sit together but they wouldn't let us so we sat apart in separate rooms. A young waitress eventually told us we could push tables together an hour later but the owner said this was not possible because she had another reservation and didnt want to make up our table. When one of the officers asked if that was too much to do and she walked away. But she told the waitress that it was because she didn't want the waitress to have to serve different tableswhatever that means. Mind you, we still didn't have our food by this point (an hour later). I said i felt discriminated against and they laughed at me.
By the time we got ready to leave, it was a lunch ruined by a woman with an agenda to get rid of us, nasty food and dried salad. The entire restaurant was empty, so obviously no reservations to blame their disgusting behavior on. And while I was trying to have a conversation in the bathroom with my sister, some older looking girl interrupted and tried to justify themselves by saying they are big on reservations and when I explained to her that her place was empty she said she meant reservations for the rest of the day. I told her whatever and that race is obviously a factor and she laughed. She wasn't even our waitress i think she just liked the drama or was upset with her waiter life. I personally think people that don't like their jobs should work towards something else and not take it out on others in such a petty way.
Needless to say, I strongly believe this place has something against pregnant women, military, elderly, or Hispanics. Either that or they simply do not understand how to run a business or treat customers. This owner clad in drapey shirt and old jeans doesn't seem to care about quality and I'm horrified to have met her.

White Horse Tavern is a historic inn turned restaurant listed as a U.S. historic place. I remember my grandfather talking about time he spent here while a candidate at the Naval Academy Preparatory School. Dining is at the bar or at cozy tables on the first or second floor. It is a beautiful building and the food is wonderful.
