Amazing cityscape. Best to see Phoenix at night!
Do watch Dobbin's overlook. Park entry closes by 7pm,but you can hang around till 11pm (confirmed from park ranger)

This is the largest Municipal Park in the United States, at least that's what I've heard. It's a fantastic place to go hiking and enjoy the desert without leaving the big city. There is hiking, and mountain biking, and just simply sitting and enjoying the view depending on what part of the park you visit.

This place is wonderful. Beautiful scenery, wonderful trails, from easy to advanced. Not too many water spots, so make sure you come prepared. Dogs are allowed which I enjoy, just keep them leashed.

We just went for a drive here and got out for a somewhat short walk, but it was very nice. We definitely want to go back and try more of the trails. The ride on Summit Road was beautiful, nice view overlooking the Phoenix metro area and the road was curvy as it wound up the mountain. They have qr codes that you can scan on the trail, well I saw at least one, that shows what your coordinates are which I thought was nice. There were reminders of precautions to take while hiking (getting enough water, etc). The short walk we went on took us through rocky areas you could climb on. We had expected to pay for parking but where we went, we didn't encounter any paid parking. We stopped by Dobbins Lookout, there were a lot of people there so we didn't get out of the car. Can't wait to visit again and try another trail.

This is the largest city park in the United States! It was Calvin Coolidge's (President) and he sold it to the City of Phoenix.

This is a great free park to hike, bike, horseback or just drive through. A very popular activity is just driving up to one of the three lookouts at the top of the mountain which is 1,000+ feet above the desert floor.

I've enjoyed it many times! Of note, the road gates are closing now at 7pm and you have until 11pm to walk or bike out when it closes.

If you are travelling then this is a must see. The views are amazing. If you are like me this is also a great place to downhill race on your longboard, skates, or anything else. Just be mindful of traffic. There is also horse riding right before entering the park. $40 for an hour and $60 for 2 hours.

Absolutely one of Phoenix's most beautiful parks! Take a drive up South Mountain, one of the most gorgeous mountain ranges in the city. At the top there are plenty of lookouts to suit your desires. South Mountain is home to many activities. There is a neat area for pictures at the bottom by the horse stables. When the weather is cooler you can horseback ride throughout the park! There are good mountain biking and hiking trials all over the park for different levels of skill. Please respect the park and take care of your surrounding nature. I would also caution you to be careful driving up or down as the road is a favorite to many bikers and downhill skateboarders. It is important that we share the road in order to keep this place a safe and fun destination for all..

There are some great mountain bike trails here, including the Desert Classic. Nothing too technical, but just enough to keep it interesting. There is one big drop that caught me by surprise about halfway to the water tower. The facilities were under construction while I was there, so I can't comment on those, but thankfully there was plenty of on-street parking. Will definitely be heading back to do some more exploring! Looked like there was plenty of good hiking as well.

We've lived below south mountain for several years and went up the mountain for the first time. The sights are amazing and you can catch some amazing sunsets. I've submitted a few here and recommend it.

***Please know the gate to park looks to open around 5AM and closes at 7pm. If you're in the park prior to the gate closing the look out points had times listed open until 11pm. ***

One of the best places to view the City, fun hiking trails, and cool rock gardens. I recommend Hidden Halley and Fat Man's Pass, or Alta for any hikers wanting to check out some cool rock gardens. Ridgeline and Mormon trail give you the best views of Downtown. If you are into mountain biking I wouldn't ride this mountain unless you are decently skilled. It is a lot of fun to mountain bike but it is pretty high risk, The mountain is all rock with pretty large drops in sections and very technical trails. If you want an easier bike trail check out Desert Classic on the south side. The biggest downside to South Mountain is that it is usually 5-10 degrees hotter than anywhere else so bring lots of water. It can be a great place to hike and bike if you come prepared.

South Mountain has great trails. It lets you get into nature just feet from the city. To really get a secluded hike, try the West 40, at the end of Chandler Blvd. The old house foundation and mines are neat to explore.Also try hidden valley and fat man's pass for a great hike.

I always go here just to think, if not with family. There is a very nice view of the city and it is very quiet. I would just go here and sit in the parking lot, or take a walk near some of the remadas and enjoy the views. Beautiful place if you would like a mountain view

Great views of Phoenix that you can drive to. If you go to the education center, they will tell you where all the trails are and how to get to them. Many things to do here. Definitely worth exploring.

After recently moving to the Phoenix area, this was my second trip to South Mountain. Looking at South Mountain Park on Google Maps, you'll find a massive network of hiking and biking trails. One of the most accessible and scenic routes is Mormon Trail to Hidden Valley. Starting out at the trail head, Mormon Trail begins an immediate climb which allows for some spectacular views of the city. While hiking by myself, i was quiet enough to see some wild life that I would have missed otherwise. A red tailed lizard, hummingbirds, chipmunks, rabbit, and tiny lizards that scurried away in the blink of an eye. Mormon trail is pretty and I clicked off photos but entering Hidden Valley was amazing. This is the place to take your time and soak it all in. The caves and rock here are quite the surprise and once out of the cave area, you'll see why it's called Hidden Valley. It's hard to reconcile the natural untouched beauty so close to the city.

The hikes are very clean. We tried the Hidden Valley hike from the Mormon trail head and it was superb. A little hard to find the trail near the hidden natural tunnel and hard to get to (had to climb some rocks) but it's a nice reward once you get there. I think it's better for first timers if you hang a right to the National trail going east through the tunnel then loop back via Hidden Valley trail through the Fat Man Pass on the west side.
