Clean pet friendly hotel. No breakfast. Great price. No complaints on my side at all.
Customer service was subpar. Kicked us out after they mistakenly booked us under age. Carla, the large heavyset woman at the counter, was one of the rudest people I've dealt with. Find a better place there's a bunch of hotels on this st. don't pick this one.
Quick service, but thin walls. In-room amenities are dated but functional. Wifi is free, decently fast, and easy to connect to. Beds are beds, and check-in and out were quick and efficient. One issue is thin walls, which leaked sound from the hallway and adjacent rooms. Good value for the price.
My one star rating comes from how unsafe I felt during my stay. I'm not even including the uncleaned room we were put in and lack of toilet paper. Parking lot is lit only at the front, and one light in the back courtyard. There were people constantly loitering outside and inside the building, regardless of the time of day, waiting to be let in by others with a key ( and I don't mean one or two people, there always seemed to be at least 5+). During the last night, someone tried to open our door but the latch lock caught it. If that wasn't enough, there was a physical fight between two other guests by the elevators in the early afternoon, and the front desk staff just watched. This was my experience even when coming back to the hotel only to sleep or shower, I don't know how much worse anyone who intends to spend most of their time there would have it. Yes, it's a budget hotel, but it's not worth the savings to potential getting mixed up in shady business - go find somewhere else.
The negatives: The lobby smelled like bug spray. The bathrooms are very small. The bathroom sink has NO counter space. The staff was not friendly and, in fact, rude at times. They force you to pay a "safe rental usage fee" even when you aren't going to use the safe. They tell you that you can ask for a refund when you leave but then they give you the run around about it and then give you a receipt for the reduced amount but still charge your card for the full amount. Yes, it is only 1.75 (with taxes) per day but it the principal of the thing; I wasn't allowed to decline the safe usage and then I had to waste 10 minutes trying to get my refund that never actually happened anyway. No fridge, no microwave, not even a coffee maker. Air conditioner barely blew but it was cold air that was barely blowing out. The bedspread on one of the beds had something spilled on it. The hotel ran out of towels and didn't replace them when they cleaned rooms or when their stock was replenished. Everyone had to go down to the desk to get them. There were about 6 rooms down there asking when I was getting mine. There is NO breakfast of any kind. The breakfast room had a total of 6 chairs in it, for a 4 story hotel! No meeting room. The only good lighting in the parking lots was at the front and back doors. The rest of the parking lot is dark.
The positives: The rooms felt fairly clean, the beds were comfortable and pillows were ok. One thing that the room had that was nice was an abundance of electric outlets however, only some of them worked. The hotel looks nice from the outside. The lobby is decent looking. The rooms are adequate if you like plain and simple with no counter in the bathroom, and with absolutely NO frills whatsoever!
Not bad compared to the price of other hotels in the area It was clean the only thing was the light fixtures had dead bugs in them. Staff was friendly & lobby was clean. The maid did come to clean the room on our second day.. The only thing is we asked for clean towels & the whole stay we only had 2 between 3 of us. I even mentioned on our reservation there would be 3. Other than that we would come stay here again.
Upon arrival, it took over 40 minutes to check in. The lobby was at least 80 degrees because one of the automatic doors was broken and just stayed open. Being slightly hurried after waiting so long, we didn't pay much attention to the room (other than the fact you had to slam the door to get it to latch), just set our luggage down and headed out.
Later that night, we got back and went into the bathroom to shower: not only was there clear water damage and exposed wall texture with mold on it, but it looked like the shower hadn't been cleaned for a long time, and not even rinsed before we checked in because there was still hair stuck to the wall. Then we finished showering, and realized one of the towels was dirty with something brown. We were too tired to bother phoning the front desk and went to bed.
The next day, we noticed that paint was peeling off of the walls and ceiling in the main room, the curtain was about to fall off the wall, the screws from the bar door guard were partially pulled out (presumably from someone trying to break in at some point and never fixed), the floor didn't seem to have even been swept recently, and the swimming pool was green.
We took the dirty towel to the front desk, and started telling her about the other issues with the room, but she didn't seem interested (as if getting such complaints was a common occurrence), and didn't do anything more to ameliorate the situation other than offering to get us another towel.
Edit: took a swab of the mold and had it tested, it's stachybotrys, aka Black Mold. Not just gross and unpleasant but actually dangerous. I'd give 0 stars if I could.
The upgraded single king is clean, comfortable, and quiet. The bed is firm but soft to the touch. The desk is functional and great for doing business. It even has a plain color accent wall to use as a backdrop if you need to video conference. But it could use more and better planning for the desk outlets. The bathroom was simply adequate. Minor damage to the caulking and rust on the shower hardware. The shower head was over sold. The sink was actually very nice despite having no drain plug lever. The towels were rough and small, but clean. The iron leaked and spat black material on my white shirt. The microwave was sized for a dorm room. The refrigerator is too small to close then the snack box is put in causing it to freeze over from running continually. The snack box contain different brands of products than what is shown online and in a display case at the front desk. But, for the price, it's really a good deal and worth a visit. But I don't think it should be called upgraded when there are areas of the room that were overlooked during planning.
Excellent customer service and great rooms for a low price compared to the area competitors. Jackie (reception manager) was able to even find a wine opener while my stay.
Definitely coming back while I am in Austin.
I drove in late, arriving just before midnight, exhausted and in need of sleep. Danielle, the wonderful woman at the front desk, was so understanding of me even though I think I asked her the same questions about three times. She then got me the hotel toiletries that I hadn't packed and made sure I had everything I needed. The room was clean and comfortable, pretty much what I expected. Amazing a/c. But it was the customer service that sold me on my experience. I also asked her about directions to the Omni (I was attending a con) and how traffic would be. She was able to give me the directions without a second thought and predicted the traffic perfectly. I had no problems finding the con and traffic was pretty much nonexistent, as she predicted. Overall, the hotel wasn't anything special, but it was clean and good. But Danielle made me remember my experience enough to bother posting a review.
If anyone is looking for a great deal on hotels you can check it out on HotelRaven. com Booked a room on there and they had the best rates around
The hotel did not receive the reservation from expedia. Red Roof apologized profusely and upgraded the room at no extra charge. The room was newly remodeled and very clean. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. There is a safe in the room you could use for an extra small fee. Every employee always had a smile and wonderful personality.
I would not stay there again. The Red Roof+ Austin South was very poorly maintained and in rough shape. This should have been about a $35 room, then I would have expected all the problems. The pool was green and full of leaves. The elevators we're missing panels so you could see the shaft. In our room the toilet paper roll was missing it's center hub so the TP was just on the back of the toilet. There was also significant water damage to the sheet rock. The safe in our room looked like someone had tried to rip it from the wall and was just barely dangling and almost fell. The staff seemed very friendly but really not helpful. I had needed a baggage cart and they told me to go find one, so I walked 3 floors in the hotel to find one. There was a room down the hall from mine where the door had been kicked in. BUT, our bed linens and towels did seem to be clean, so there is that.

We were in town for a concert and only needed to stay one night and this was the cheapest place. That said, we expected a lot worse for what we paid. Overall, it's not fancy or whatever but it's clean and modern. I feel like we got a good deal. The staff was entirely pleasant and very attentive to our needs. Oh and the wifi was good. My only complaint is that the pillows are kind of small and thin. Two pillows is too much and just one is not enough. Other than that, our experience was pretty satisfactory.
