  A nice small zoo with a personal touch. Very clean. You are able to add on items such as feeding the Elephants. You are escorted through the zoo by a knowledgeable staff member who tells you a lot about each animal.

  The tour was ok and the exhibits were ok. BUT, this is were I have an issue:
  
  I took my daughter and her whole family to the zoo to celebrate my 3yr old granddaughters birthday. My daughter also brought my 5yr old grandson and 6 month old grandson and to my surprise they charge FULL PRICE FOR LITTLE BABIES!!. If I had not promised my granddaughter a trip to the zoo I would have walked away and they would not have gotten a hold of the $110 I had to pay to get in.
  
  Really?? he doesn't even crawl yet.
  
  So, I don't see another trip to the Monterey Zoo in my future.

  We had a wonderful time visiting as a family and getting to feed the elephants is a highlight we will talk about for years to come! We also appreciated the additional information about the animals they care for as well as patiently answering our questions (even those from a 4 yr old). We thought the animals seemed very happy and interacted playfully with each other as well as with us as we walked by.

  First off I am no professional and do enjoy visiting a zoo every now and again. Although they are not my first choice, as long as the animals aren't being tortured then I'm alright with trying it out. I found a flyer for this zoo and decided to do my research. The reviews weren't exactly appealing so I decided I'd rather not visit a seemingly hostile and depressing environment. Now, it's obvious from the conversation between Susan and the owner that this place is not worth going to. When an owner goes out of their way to subliminally imply that the reviewer wasn't "sane" like other guests, I wouldn't want to be classified as sane or not. That statement is extremely appalling coming for an owner. Also, to the ignorant owner, you cannot assume whether or not she is an extremist activist, as this is an example of poor customer relations. You state that she has "false qualifications" yet do not know her experience or actual qualifications? Clearly she seems more qualified than someone such as yourself.

  If you're like me and you love, appreciate, and respect animals, I suggest that you do some research on this place before a visit. I have studied and cared for wild and domestic animals for over thirty years, and my honest, professional, and unbiased opinion of the Monterey Zoo is that it is nothing more than a road-side menagerie. At best, it is primitive, thoughtless, and inhumane when it comes to providing the kind physical and emotional care these animals need and rightly deserve. First of all, for the animals housed in cages (including the lonesome parrot who resides in a corner of the lobby/office), their habitat is nothing more than a tiny prison cell, complete with cement floors, little privacy, void of stimulation (except for the onlookers staring at them), no vegetation, and very little shade for some of them - just a painfully sad and lonely existence for these poor creatures. Most of the animals I observed displayed neurosis: pacing and rocking back and forth, lethargy, and, of course, a deep sadness. When it came to the elephants, ostrich, zebra, and the two accompanying water buffalo it was apparent that they suffer the same emotional distress as the animals that are caged. The corral that these large animals occupy and share is, again, inadequate in size, lacks enough shade, and their water hole is virtually non existent - what a miserable life for these precious animals. Perhaps when California measure SB 1062 goes into effect January 1, 2018, which bans the use of bullhooks on elephants, this place will be forced to shut down. The bottom line is that the owner does not love these animals - he has merely found a way to exploit them.

  Nice zoo we had a good Time with the tour, also for a few Bucks u can also feed the elephants!

  Vision Quest zoo and bed and breakfast we just fed the lion and the Elephant help the elephants ready for bed and in the morning the elephant brought us breakfast it was a real good time
