The food was excellent (fondue!), wine was great, amazing deal on date night special for two. Great location near the Capitol. Music was too loud so was hard to have a conversation.

Merchant is always great.
Came here for a late brunch yesterday. My boyfriend and i shared the meat/cheese board small plate. This was great!
He had the Merchant omelette with a bloody and I had the chicken fried sandwich. All were great, and recommendable.
We asked the waitress at the end of our meal to box up the meat tray. She was fantastic and gave us extra mustard, jams, honey and Madison Sourdough bread slices! We re-created the board later at home :).response / report this review -

For several months, I had wanted to visit Merchant Madison. They are farm-to-table and very local.
When I go there, I was a bit disappointed to see that the menu is different from the one on line; this is typical of farm-to-table restaurants and normally a selling point, but in this case, I liked the old menu better. I should note, I do not eat pork (often), and pork was the majority of the large plates. The small plate menu seemed very dull; there was a salad, fries, and soup. The small plates seemed to be more like appetizers rather than small plates.
We did order the three items; the warmed olives appetizer, the Ploughman's Board, and the Mussels and Frites. Everything was local, which is a large gold star, and very delicious. The olives were not pitted, which is interesting; never have I been served olives with pits. They were very good! When they cooled, they were quite hard and lost their appeal. I normally order olives and slowly eat them throughout the dining experience.
The board offered a very good selection of meats and cheeses, and the pickled vegetables were a nice palate cleanser. I did not care for the cheese selection of the day; they were good, but not too interesting to the palate. The meats were, however, quite a treat! I have wanted to visit Underground Butcher for some fresh meats, and now I know that I must! Very good.
The mussels were also very good, served in a nice broth. I did not order them myself, though I sampled them from my partner, because I am not a huge fan of mussels. If you are a fan of mussels, I though recommend.
Also worth mentioning, although I don't review them, their drink menu was insane! It had to be 8 pages and had something for everyone. Very expansive. There is also a liquor store attached to the restaurant that has a very nice collection of local drinks.response / report this review -

Um awesome cocktails. Good food too, though a bit on the heavy / meaty side. The cocktails alone though make this worth the trip. Bartenders are excellent at designing a drink for your tastes if you give them some guidelines.

We've been at the restaurant waiting for an hour and a half to get our food. It turns out they had a large group. We made reservations days in advance, so you would think they would have planned accordingly.
It would have been a good heads up if we were told it would be a long wait.I hope the food is worth the wait.if not, they'll be downgraded to 1 star.

It turns out that the food was mediocre at bestsome of it was stone coldnot worth the wait at all.it also made things worse that our table got food at different times.response / report this review -

It's great to go here with someone willing to split a plate because everything is delicious! I ventured into vegetarian territory with one dish and was pleasantly surprised with how great it tasted (like I might venture back just to eat vegetables!) . I won't convert, but as a side to a lamb slider, you really can't go wrong. Bar staff are up to the job, and if you're feeling lucky let the bartender choose your drink for you.

Merchant has amazing cocktails and mocktails. They're lots of fun and absolutely delicious. Also have a great cheese and meat board which is good for groups.

Enjoyed the brunch but very slow service at 2 pm. Smoked salmon was fishy. Always love the scottish eggs and chicken sandwich is great.

Dinner with a friend. Food was excellent. The Pork chop was well prepared, juicy and flavorful. Service was great, friendly and attentive. I have eaten here many times and never been disappointed.

Merchant has amazing service both at tables and the bar. It's great for a quick drink or to sit down and eat. I would highly recommend checking out their live music or going for late night dancing when when they move the tables.

One of my favorite places for craft cocktails. Also some of the best fried cheese curds I've ever had (and I've had a lot). Only had dinner once, but food and service were very good. Can be a bit noisy.
