My favorite spot to eat in Pittsburgh! Great food, interesting history and cozy atmospheredrinks served in mason jars! Excellent German food in historic Deutschtown section of the city.

Looks like Max's stepped up their game with some excellent dinner specials. I recently stopped by with my Dad and had a pork shank special served with fried kale over mashed potatoes. This was well prepared falling off the bone pork and the kale was both crispy and tender. This type of dish might be double the price at some other local establishments. This in addition to an extensive selection of German beer made for a pleasant time. I recommend the Dutch Club dark for a locally-produced inexpensive bock beer.

Staff has always been friendly and attentive. Addictive popcorn at the bar. Nice beer selection. It is German food, and although I am no expert, it always seems to be good quality. If you like old bars, with the original interior and feel, this place is for you. Crowds tend to be hit and miss. The bar area is not really that big when you consider the space needed for the booths.

Atmosphere, good people, good German food, and Kostritzer Schwarzbier on draft. What more do you need?
The Reuben is a must for lunch (though the giant fish sandwich is also a good option if you plan on not eating dinner). The sampler is an excellent option for dinner (and a great value): A generous (but not excessive) portion of three of their dinner items plus sides.

Good German food in the North side of Pittsburgh. I love the beer I can't pronounce. The mushroom gravy is amazing.

It's always a great time at Max's! Great for a date of family night. Incredible German dishes and they have a player piano that's great for the kids. You don't see many of those around!

GREAT local neighborhood restaurant. The staff is friendly and helpful. Patrick is behind the bar and is a great guy to know. He's local and knowledgeable. We stayed at an Airbnb around the corner and Max's was our local place. The schnitzel is a winner!

We had a few drinks at Allegheny City Brewing and wanted something to eat so we walked to Max's. Glad we found this place! Interesting history. Love how they have been around forever. Super friendly staff and good food. The apple raisin dressing on the pork was unique. Loved the German potato salad. We would go back.

Completely authentic German food, along with American menu choices, in an interesting building with great atmosphere. Excellent bratwurst, especially the appetizer served also with cheese, other wursts, mustard & breads. Parking is not particularly easy especially during the prime hours. Large place, interesting history, unique decorative pieces, worth the parking issues!

Decent German stylized food. Wonderful waitress staff. They were incredibly polite. Food wasn't exactly what was expected from the descriptions on the menu. The potato pancakes were more pancake than your traditional potato based pancakes.

Went in with high expectations from the reviews and recommendations from friends. Lovely little bar, authentic decor, and the server was very nice. But the food was nothing to rave about. I guess it is alright if you're old and can't taste much. We felt like everything came out of a can or package. The regular soup tasted like campbells chicken noodle. I wouldn't come back here to eat.

If you want German food, this is the place to go. It's a great date night location and the food is amazing. Desserts are great too, from the strudel to the Black Forest chocolate cake (my favorite). Highly recommend!
