This is the third location for Earl Abel restaurant in 84 years. Think it is a far better site near the Pearl Brewery complex than the Austin Hwy location was. The restaurant's interior & decor is unrecognizable by those who patronized the restaurant since 1933 when it was elegant with beautiful statues & ornaments, used white table clothes and fine china. A few of their comfort foods & fried menu items have been retained (chicken, steak & fish) but they now carry vegan and gluten free selections appealing to younger generations. Soon their bar will open and offer beer, wine, & hard liquor. You now order your food at the counter. Pay for it & are given a number. Your filled order is then brought to your table from the kitchen in Styrofoam plates with plastic utensils. Earl Abel's only opened yesterday. No signage. Register not programmed to handle specials. Bar not stocked. No sauces for catfish. Limited parking off of Pearl Street. Restroom is wheel chair accessible. We ordered Turkey and fish plates ($22.00). Both were hot coming out of the kitchen & good. We will wait several weeks for them to get their act together. It's worth returning for a second visit.

I went during lunch and the food was not good I was very disappointed with everything but the chicken strip because it was the freshest item. Maybe there is a better time to go but everything taste like it was sitting out for hours!

Faint bittersweet wisps of fond memories that's what my visit to the new Earl Abel's provided to me as I ate.

I ate many meals with loved-ones in the old location as I grew up, sometimes with celebrities a few tables away. It was a sort of tradition in our family. The old place was a classic - unique. For me, it wasn't ever really about the food, though the food was always great.

I think about the decades of history that old location survived. America was constantly, and often speedily changing around it, and it finally even swept Earl Abel's out of true existence.

The food at the new place was probably the same. I could tell the recipes were likely the old ones I knew and loved, but it just didn't taste the same sitting in a strip mall restaurant.

The new place is ok, I suppose, but really just a museum for me. I went to see the old salvaged stuff that I remembered fondly being in it's original home and I ate. Two separate things.

This is THE spot to go. It has such a warm, cozy, classic ma and pa feel to the restaurant. The fried chicken is to die for, especially the spicy chicken, and the staff is so friendly. You walk in and you can feel the warmth, hear the classic doo-wop music, and smell the home-cooked meals. It displays the aged history of the restaurant across the walls also. They offer a wonderful selection of pies and cakes, a nice variety of home-cooked meals, and offer wonderful desserts, beers, and more! Along with all of this, they also offer a separate room to host business meetings, parties, celebrations and more. I'll definitely have to come back to this joint!

Awesome delicious food with old school decor. Sara our waitress is awesome - she went above and beyond with making sure our food was perfect and what we asked for. She is very hospitable and efficient!! I ordered an open face roast beef sandwich good!!

The Alamo Eagles Chapter of the 101st Airborne Division Assco. has been meeting at Earl Able's for a year now, every one there goes out of their way to serve us and take care or our members. Thank you all at Earl Able's AIRBORNE!!!!!

Food was not all that great staff is rude an somewhat racists with there sneaky gestures an comments they definetly make you feel uncomfortable an un wanted would never go back or recommend it. A friend from work actually recommended it for a good laugh i couldnt believe how honest he was when he said racist an un professional

I went to eat dinner here with my mother. We did not get waited on and a server snapped "I'll be there in a minute" to my mother. After waiting about 15 minutes a couple came in and got waited on immediately. The restaurant wasn't even busy. I'll never go back.

I always hear about Earl Abel's and I remember the stories my parents told me when we would drive past the old location on Broadway.

So one day I decided to go with my friend and his parents to the new location on Austin Hwy and try it for myself. I ordered the chicken fried steak.

I was pretty disappointed by the food, the menu which is mostly comfort food wasn't the problem. The food I received however was bland. My chicken fried steak was pretty plain. I felt like maybe it was prepared for an older crowd, using low cholesterol oil, maybe low sodium, no salt. Im not sure but everything was lacking flavor.

I couldn't understand what all the hype was about. My friend who was eating with me agreed that his meal was pretty plain as well and he ordered something else. We both left confused as to why this place has remained popular with the middle age and older crowds.

Maybe I just got a bad meal, but I've yet to return since this experience.

Food is great, service is great. However their menu and online advertising is wrong as they don't serve chicken and waffles untill 1; even though their site and menu say 9am-8PM. I will gladly change my review to 5.
