My husband had spinal surgery at this hospital last week. His doctor did not give us a choice of hospitals and we are fairly new to the area, so went into the experience with an open mind.
First, the facility is in need of a major update. It looks worn and tired.

Because of this, they probably can't pay the wages to attract top notch staff so are stuck with the second and third tier. This must be where the inept and trainee nurses go because they wouldn't answer my husband's questions or show him the respect by listening to him when he was in pain. He had to call 2, sometimes 3 times to get the attention of the nurses. One of them did not insert the IV correctly and his hand was swollen for 2 days! They stuck him so many times trying to draw blood his arms are still bruised a week later!

I have been in training hospitals, and they usually tell you ahead of time, this is a training hospital. They should have at least had someone more experienced available to help!! He had an ice pack that would be long cold and since he could not bend or adjust it himself (and no one came after repeated calls), he would have to sit on it for hours before they came and took it from his chair.

There was no med or meal schedule, they came at all different hours with no hint of a plan; it seems the staff was harried and shortstaffed. The nurses always have a dour and sad look, no one smiles or seems happy. The only nurse who seemed to have some knowledge was Bailey, but because she was the only one who knew anything, she was off training and wasn't available to provide care to her patients! I would not recommend this hospital to my worst enemy; everyone deserves good care when you are sick and recovering from surgery. You won't find it here!

Suggestion--- take the 4 or 5 volunteers that are always chatting at the front desk and have them do something useful like pass out meals or help patients walk around the halls because the nurses sure won't do it!

Went in with a sprained ankle at 11:30 pm and was seen within 15 minutes. I spent about an hour total at the hospital (was seen by a nurse, a doctor, go x- rays done, and was given crutches and a brace)! The staff was extremely friendly :)

I have never been so disrespected and ill-treated by a hospital staff, and after reading all of these reviews, I am shocked and horrified that the people who work for this facility still have jobs. I can't think of a single job I've had where I would still be employed after treating anyone the way I was treated when i was there early Monday morning.

The attendant was rude and dismissive of my pain, saying "if this is the worst thing you've ever been through, you've had a great life." The nurse told me that I was over-reacting and that there were people there who were really sick. I ended up walking out, even though I was in tremendous pain and needed help. But I knew I would never get the help I needed from a hospital that employed such callous and heartless people.

I eventually ended up at Sharp, where the staff there were extremely kind and concerned, and I received the help I needed.

In no way is this behavior acceptable, and I am shocked to learn that so many others have experienced the same. Every single person I came into contact with was horrible, and I am thankful that I was just in San Diego for vacation and will never need to go back to that hell-hole of a hospital again. I would never recommend going to this ER, which seems to work best for them, as they don't really act as if they care about people in the first place.

went for routine lab work as soon as they opened at 7am. Techinician on the phone on a personal call for the whole first 10 minutes when I arrived saying "Damn its 7am and I'm already working" ummmm- well thats the time you open sweetie. she asked for a fasting urine and 2x blood sample and i knew this was not needed. decided i would leave and check with my dr first before going back. dr said no fasting needed and only 1 blood sample. decided to skip alvarado and went to coronado sharp instead, night and day experience- the technicians there were friendly, knew what they were doing and were professional. so glad I didnt let her do any work on me- dont come here for lab work!!!

I'm new to the are and never been in a worse hospital in my life! The nurse has no compassion for any of her patients thats cause I could hear her talk to each and every one of them, since sheets are what separate the rooms No privacy whatsoever! Sent me to the public bathroom to do a urine sample full of bodily fluids everywhere! I am beyond myself I ended up walking out after 5 hrs of no results ! Do not take ur family here it is unsanitary and horrible costumer service! I honestly don't know how the state still Let's this place keep in business!

My husband needed to have a procedure here. The nurses were friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The procedure went smoothly and my husband and I had a great experience. We were treated with much respect and excellent care.

The nursing staff was absolutely atrocious and should not be working for a hospital. Never in my life have I been disrespected in the short amount of time I was in their facility. We were refused care and talked down to as if we were doing something wrong when in reality we were trying to help someone who truly needed medical attention. The next hospital we went to was a total 180 from Alvarado and provided us care with kindness and no questions asked because they understood what they needed to do in this situation, unlike the staff here. They responded the way a true hospital should be run. I can't wrap my mind around how the treatment of people who are in need of help come second to their egos. The nurse that was in charge, Dan, is the most disrespectful and unkind individual and if he wants to continue the attitude and tone in which he spoke to us, he should look for a new profession. I will be contacting the hospital immediately in phone and/or in person to go over this whole situation. Completely embarrassed for this place.

The nursing staff in the ICU are, hands down, the worst I have ever seen. EXTREME lack of bedside manner. Telling non-family members that our mother is going to die and how multiple doctors have told that to us over and over and we aren't accepting it AFTER a doctor had informed us that there is a chance. One doctor. The only doctor that actually took the time to stop and update us on things. The other doctors were short and acted like they didn't care at all.

I don't know who is in charge here, but you seriously need to educate your staff in professionalism.

DO NOT HAVE SURGERY HERE! My grandmother went in to Alvarado on the 16th of February for open heart surgery. She was released 12 days later on the 27th of February. My grandmother was so weak that she collapsed to the floor less than 12 hours of being released from Alvarado. We had to call an ambulance to get her back up and they had to take her to the Sharp emergency room. There she was diagnosed with SEPSIS and FLUID IN HER LUNGS the same day she was released from Alvarado. Alvarado is the worst hospital I have ever experienced. Nurses are forgetful and understaffed. The facilities are old and outdated. Nurses would forget to give my grandmother her medications and then blame her. Saying that they had a conversation and my grandmother decided not to take her meds. She was transfered from the ICU to her own private room and back to the ICU without a single phone call to inform us where she was or how she was doing. She is now at Sharp in the ICU recieving treatment for her infection. I will never go to Alvarado again. I am just happy to know that my grandmother is in a better hospital recieving the quality treatment she needs.

This hospital should not be in business. Two weeks ago I got a boxers fracture in Huntington Beach. I went to the ER at Hoag and they x-rated me, splinted me
Up, and told me I had the fracture, and to follow up with an ortho in SD. They couldn't refer me an ortho so long story short ended I having to go to the ER again to try and get a referral. That's when I made the biggest mistake to come to this hospital. I waited for 5 hours in the ER. 5 hours!! And it happened to be a waste of time because they ended up telling me I don't have a broken bone and that it's just a contusion. They wouldn't give me medical records or X-ray records because they said there was no break. They wouldn't splint me up because they said there was no break. Here I am a week later still can't clench my hand and still in pain. My hand is obviously broken, but the ER obviously doesn't care. I'm at a doctor right now and if they confirm that it's broken Alvarado will be hearing from me about malpractice/ negligence.

From start to finish my experience was wonderful. Brought my son into the ER, I wasn't sure what was wrong. Turned out he had been bitten 3 times by a black widow at his friends house.

The staff was kind and knowledgeable.. They explained to myself and my son what all the steps were and what we needed to do. My son thought it was very funny that the doctor is scared to death of spidersthanks for sharing.
