I have been a Kaiser patient since 1995 and have never had an issue with the care I received. In 2016 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and once again I received excellent care from my Oncologist to my plastic/general surgeons. My doctors get 5 STARS.. However, my issue with Kaiser Zion occurred when I went to my recent oncology appt. It was in October and most people are aware of the fact that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Well, when I walked into the department to sign in I noticed that there were no posters or signs of Breast cancer month. I was surprised that an oncology department wouldn't promote this month. So, I asked the receptionist why no decorations. She explained that their supervisor made them take all decorations down and it was to remain as none personal/generic as possible So not to offend anyone. WELL I'M OFFENDED! To make matters worse, I was told by someone that works in the department that there was a recent situation with a patient that was offended/upset by a nurses shirt that had a breast cancer ribbon on it and the nurse was made to take off the shirt. The department has a pink day, but no ribbons.
As a breast cancer survivor and an RN myself, I think Kaiser is letting a few determine the importance of this month and it's message. The message... Check your breast and for those with or have battled this disease.. We are behind you...
I'm just so irritated by this.. Who would have thunk an oncology department that is concerned about someone being offended by Breast Cancer Awareness..
Final note... One out of 8 women are affected by breast cancer, THAT is offensive!

Me and my family are very thankful with Jeremy RN , my daughter was at the emergency room on Friday September 15, 2017 he is the most caring and supporting person we ever meet at a hospital. He is an awesome person, very positive and helpful, also the hospital is very clean, first class. THANK YOU! from Sara Rojas and Family.

I had Kaiser for over a decade and now that our insurance changed and we can't have Kaiser I miss it so much! I always felt like I could get a same-day appointment with Kaiser, usually in a doctor's office, but if not I could go to urgent care or the ICS clinic in Chula Vista. I feel like Kaiser has so many options to make health care easier and avoid the ER when it's not necessary. It's pretty much impossible for me to get an appointment with pediatrics on the same day now that I'm not with Kaiser. I'm a healthy adult, but I had 3 babies with Kaiser and I was treated like a queen. I have found it easy to switch doctors when I have wanted to and membership services always follows-up if you have an unresolved issue. It's frustrating now having to call around to figure out who will charge the least amount of money for my prescriptions. I liked the convenience of being able to get my prescriptions at my doctor's office when I was with Kaiser.
Kaiser makes it simple, straightforward, and efficient. No healthcare system is perfect, however, I wish more healthcare systems were run like Kaiser Permanente.

Went here a week ago while in San Diego to visit Sea World. While eating dinner had symptoms of a stroke, drove here and
Within two minutes of walking in front door had an IV in both arms. Assigned bed B7 in emergency room. Nurse Jennifer was the BEST. She was very knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. Doctors ran series of tests and released me only after they were satisfied that I had Bells Palsy and not a stroke.

Kaiser places patient safety as a top priority. What I saw as a travel nurse at Kaiser Zion Medical Center makes me question how this goal can be met. They were very often short staffed with nurses. I have had patients tell me that they noticed they have had to help out with their family member's care because they noticed that nursing staff was very overworked and understaffed.
Kaiser Zion Medical Center hires a large number of travel nurses. I'm assuming this is the case because they do not want to pay the benefits to a full time employee. They offer very little training to the travel nurses and have high expectations of the travel nurse. They have a different standard for full time employees and extend deadlines for them to meet the requirements of the nursing unit but travel nurses have to meet those expectations from the start of their assignment. If travel nurses cannot meet these requirements at the start of their assignment, their contract is cancelled.
Nurse managers are given too much authority in determining whether to let go of a travel nurse. If the travel nurse makes a mistake her contract is cancelled and she is sent home on the spot. The nurse has no chance to come before an executive team and voice her side of what happened. The nurse manager is given the sole discretion to terminate a travel nurse's contract.
Travel nurse are often given the more challenging patients and the least liked assignments by regular staff nurses. With so little orientation to a facility it is very easy to fail to follow that particular hospital's protocol.

Arrived to Emergency room at 8:30pm and was welcomed by a friendly staff. Once I was being seen for my injury everyone was helpful, kind, and genuinely cared about how I was feeling. I was done and in my car by 10:45pm. I was very impressed!

I'm writing this in hope to bring better education to the nurses.
I pulled a lineament in my back one morning and was in a significant amount of pain. I was informed by the representative I was connected to using the number in the back of my card that there are no urgent care centers in the area, but I felt I needed to be seen, so I felt I had to go to the emergency center.
Once I was seen (3 hours after check-in) the nurse wanted to give me an IV for pain and fluids. I explained that I could not afford a large bill and only wanted what was absolutely necessary. She proceeded to tell me if I am a Kaiser meme bet I will only pay my CO-pay. I'm a healthy adult who (gratefully) nearly never needs to see a doctor. I have had Kaiser 2+ years and say my primary care physician once for a check-up, so I did not know there is NO co-pay for and ER visit - it is my deductible, $1000. The doctor (I will keep her name private), who told me "let me make the decisions" managed to meet that deductible and then some.
I wish the doctors and nurses would have a better understanding of what costs could be when a patient specifically says 'I can't afford a large bill' or at least don't counsol them by providing a false expectation of a co-pay (which is thought of to be much less than a deductible).
It's very disappointing. I was even ordered a CT after all my labs and urinalysis came back normal. It's sad to think of how many people this happens to. And if you can't pay or meet their payment arrangements for something you said you didn't want, your credit is affected and other necessities in life will be difficult to get. I really hope they are trained properly on compassion for patient affordability.

I have never being to a hospital where the nurses are so dedicated as this one, in the time I was there I learn a lot about life and suffering that I have avoided all of my life. my stay was short and I saw what they have to put up with, from the junkie to my right who cried for attention, to the people to my left who did not speak the language. upstairs the drama is the same, people who demand respect because of what they do for a living, the nurses always seem to know what to do. life goes on for some but not for all you learn the hard way, how many faces have they seen go by and wonder if he or she made it alive? to all the nurses who put up with me thank you. parking is a problem? please post this on a board for all to see, from the students to the doctors. ps was operated on for colon cancer and I am still alive with ostomy results, you still worry about parking space? what is more important?

Had a really good experience here. Incredible physicians and nurses. We trusted we were in good hands through our entire ordeal. Food wasn't bad and even had room service!

Being in the hospital is rough, and no hospital will ever be a luxury hotel. But they did everything to keep us safe and relatively comfortable.
