  Wanted to take my boyfriend out for dinner as it was his birthday. We chose the Esplanade in Devonport.
  Firstly the table I’d reserved in advance was unclean and had bits of grime and food on it, my boyfriend politely asked the waitress if she could give it a clean, she came back with a damp cloth and brushed all the debris across the table, half of which landed on his lap.
  Secondly, our entree order was messed up and an extra dish we didn’t order was served.
  Thirdly, when our meals arrived, they had once again stuffed up what we had ordered. They brought out the wrong meal for my boyfriend so we insisted they took it back and bring out the correct meal we had ordered, they said that would take 15 minutes.
  We shared some of the meal I had ordered, it wasn’t very nice. Some of the hot food was served cold and it tasted awful!
  Nearly half an hour later, we decided to leave, went up to pay, to find that his meal was ready. By this point I was so upset, all I wanted to do was take my boyfriend out for a nice dinner for his birthday, not realising it would be so complicated. I was relieved to hear that they weren’t going to charge us for my boyfriends meal (that he never got) and my meal as it was cold and not cooked very well.
  We ended up going home and eating 2 minutes noodles for dinner at 9pm! What a romantic way to say happy birthday!
  We won’t be coming back to say at the least! What a very unpleasant and costly experience.

  It was a wonderful and charming location. We dropped in for a coffee and croissants and they were really nice. The awesome location also means that there is a great view from every window.

  One of my most favourite places to stay. The village feel but you can go over to Auckland on the ferry if you want to. The hotel has beautiful views up and down the Waitemata harbour and the food is wonderful. Love it.

  A bit run down insidethey need a revamp. They often take the furniture for other functions leaving the bar area bereft of anywhere cozy to sit.I think it has lots of potential

  Beautiful attention to detail. Loved the ambience and staff were so pleasant. Live jazz and fireplace in bar. Convenient by ferry to islands and Auckland and such a lovely view. We would definitely recommend this accommodation. So much nicer than the generic homogenized options

  The receptionist we talked to when initially checking was unfriendly from the very beginning and then insisted we had not pre-paid for breakfasts. When we gave her a printed copy of our reservation showing she was wrong, she became flustered and started shuffling papers round her desk while blaming other people for the mistake (and to be fair, it may have been another staff member's fault). However, she should not have been unfriendly and argumentative from the start.
  
  We did not see her again during our stay and every other member of staff was very helpful. The hotel was nice and we had a fantastic room with views over the ocean. The breakfasts were great. The rest of our stay more than made up for the initial problems.

  Classic and elegant. We had our wedding reception here and first wedding night. It was a great experience and their events team are very helpful. Food was absolutely delicious, all our guests commented on it. Good option with the bar being right outside the main hall room.

  My favorite hotel if I need to be in Auckland. The ferry to the Auckland center is near by. The rooms are authentic and quite large. Nice historic building. Friendly staff and good breakfast.

  Very old grand hotel. While some aspects needed a bit of an upgrade but also contributed to an atmosphere of jaded (in a positive way) elegance. Room spacious. Bed very comfortable. Breakfast yum. One negative only- sleep assured once the restaurant fans were turned off for the evening.
