We were disappointed in the food at Basalt. The wait staff are great! Cannot be faulted.
But the food leaves a lot to be desired - over priced for what is served on your plate.
Four in our party - steak was cooked well, the fries were nice, but the portions for the price were small.
Kingfish Ceviche - the fish did not appear to be fresh.
Bruschetta - not bruschetta as would have been expected - maybe there should be a disclaimer that the Bruschetta is Basalts interpretation. There were very few tomatoes, a LOT of rocket and the bread was not toasted.
Garlic Bread - WHAT!!??? That's NOT garlic bread
Chicken Skewers - unseasoned chicken - perhaps it needed some salad with it. $16.90 for 2 skewers of chicken and some fries.
Smoked Chicken salad - Tasted better - I'm sure that was not smoked chicken.

Overall, the eating experience was bland.

Coffee takes a bit long sometimes but it's pretty good place

The food is always great and the staff friendly. Make sure you try the garlic bread it is the best I have had in a long time. I have been coming here for years and it's one of my favourite places to eat in Howick.
