We are here for 3 days 2 nights. It's our first time to Kyoto. The first day when we arrived at the hotel. The hot spring and spa is closed due to the maintenance. And the second day when we came back it's already 10:40pm but it's closed either. For the entire stay, we don't have any time to enjoy it. Open too late and close too early. No one informed when we check in. Upset experience.

STAY AWAY from Hotel Monterey!!
We had booked a room prepaid at Yen 11’500.
On check-in they tried to bilk us for a room charge of an additional Yen 20’000.
We of course refused and left for the 5 star hotel Okura, the best hotel in Kyoto, who took mercy on us hearing our story and only charged Yen 17’000.response / report this review -

No frills hotel. Room was small but well equipped. A bit of a damp smell and nothing is free. Breakfast is 6 on a 1-10 scale. VERY conveniently located and near so many great restaurants and shopping areas.

Clean and efficient. Room a bit tight, bed was huge (2 pushed together), took up more space than the room itself. Concierge was more than helpful. Would recommend.

I had my wedding at Hotel Monterey Kyoto and it was absolutely fantastic. Some of the guests didn't speak any Japanesr and the staff made sure that they had English speakers on hand. The entire staff were very helpful and made the entire experience that much better. The food was excellent and its presentation was great. The staff made sure my wife and I knew what to do every step of the way and it really took away and nerves I had. I would definitely recommend Hotel Monterey Kyoto as a wedding venue.

Visited here for the onsen (hot spring spa). This place is heavenly. Excellent staff service and the hot spring and sauna is a great way to relax. Followed by sitting in the lounge and enjoying a plum wine just a nice way to round things up. Would visit again.

The staff are very nice and forthcoming. We stayed in a twin bed room. It was spacious and clean the bath is also very nice! Ammenities were provided so we didnt even need our own toothbrush! Also the hotel is easily accesible from Kyoto station, rither by taking the subway for 3 stations or getting a taxi for ~1000yen which i would reccomend if you have suitcases with you. Overall very enjoyable stay and a hotel i can reccomend!

This is a 3 star no frills hotel. I liked the clean bathroom and the large bed, but the carpet seemed dirty and the paint on the headboard was poorly sprayed. I was struggling to decide whether or not that was part of the faux distressed look of the decor. The location is so great that I did not request to see another room. I stayed in Kyoto for 3 nights and just went to the hotel to sleep and take a quick shower.

Our 5 night stay was great!
Location is awesome. just a block from the nearest subway station - take it to/from a few stops to Kyoto station to change for the JR. It is also walking distance to Nishiki Market Shopping Street.
To help the hotel conserve water and precious resources, we opted to put out the "change towels only" sign on our door when we left each morning. As a "reward", we were given free bottled water.
Only issue we had was we could only figure out how to get one channel on the TV - we couldn't read the Japanese characters on the remote and the normal UP/DOWN changed the input, not the channel.response / report this review
